2006 Auto Club Dragway at Ca. Speedway 6-3 6-4 06 Supers

Story and by James Drew Photos By James Drew Tim Marshall & RR First race of 2006 at the AAA Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway Was a huge success as over 400 race cars wanted a chance to try out the new drag strip that Dave and Kathy Danish and crew have put together the concrete was poured only three week’s ago and with the assist of Brian Smith & Chuck Pettit Crainco Inc. to put the K rail in place. The first racers to race on the new surface was Southern California Super Assn. Super Eliminator Super Comp Super Street and So.Cal Pro Gas, plus Top Alcohol Motorcycle. On Saturday the big winners were Super E Rich Swatman at a 7.914, 170.64 mph over K & N dragster with Pat Jones driving. Jones ran a right on 7.904, 189.mph but Swatman cut a better lite. Super Comp went to Danny Aguayo over Fast Jack Beckman when Jack broke out at an 8.888. 169.19 mph (8.90 index)…Aguayo’s 8.919, 168.35 mph was plenty good for the win. A fantastic turn out of over 100 Pro Gas/Super Gas cars were on hand to honor one of the finest competitors from day one in the class Randy Marcum. Both he and his brother Ronnie were extremely involved the creation of So Cal Pro Gas racing. We all really miss Randy who we lost at the 2006 Pomona Winternationals. Therefore this race was for you Randy! In a classic final round of Pro Gas comptet6ion it was a double breakout between two of So Cals finest as Joe Roubicek in his immaculate 1963 Team Smooth Corvette ran an 8.880, 163.91 to Hollis Colleasures’ famed surfin-T roadster. Hollis and his family ran a 8.869, 152.66 mph Sunday everyone returned to the 105 + weather , while the most impressive was Steve Rice in this his record setting turbo charged Kawasaki which blistered the brand new track surface with times of .6944, 214.59 mph for track records till the PSCA guys get there next weekend. Congrats to Steve and his wife on their outstanding performance. The Riceburner won with a single pass when Steve Kyllingstad and his 2000 Koenig broke in the semis and could not make the call.. In there other three classes run on Sunday, first off Andy Spiegel ran a right on 8.908, 177.48 over a very close Robert Naber who’s dragster was runner up at 7.935, 174.68 mph. in Super E. Super Comp went to local racer Danny Fuentes who ran a fine 8.903, 154.55 mph over John Richardson who broke out at 8.895, (8.90 index) 176.35 mph. In super Street, Doug Crumlich (our Taylor Hicks/American Idol) look-a-like who also heads the Super Street Assn. , swept top honors with his black 1996 Corvette. It was a double break out for both Doug and Randy Bowers in his 1969 Camaro, Crumlich at 10.878, 147.09 mph Randy Bowers 10.869, 133.82 mph Many people were who we should probably include in this paragraph are to be thanked for completing this fine facility in record time, but a special thanks to Dave and Kathy Danish, AAA Auto/ Tom McKenan, Forrest Lucas Lucas Oil John Force and all the racers and fans who wrote and e mailed the California Speedway President Gillian Zucker that we needed a place to race but to also get the kids off the street and on the Track Drag Racing not Street Racing!
