Inanugural NHRA Lucas Oil Division 7 drag racing series invades California Dragway

Inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil racing series Division 7 Race California Dragway at California Speedway.

This was the first ever Lucas Oil NHRA drag race at Californa Speedway in Fontana California. The track surface was the best I have ever seen or walked on. Considering this drag strip has had cars parked on its surface during the NASCAR race and that it was completely torn down for the NASCAR race. The drag crew lead by Dave and Kathy Danish had just a few days to set up the guard wall's back in place and the grand stands back up all the fencing around the pit area's etc. they did a great job.Every racer I talked to loved that the Facility was well laid out and the place is all black topped so there was no dirt to contend with in the pits or on any of the return roads. The track surface had plenty of bite in it and all the local racers said they wished NHRA held more race's there. For those racers who did not attend they missed a very well run race. 450 racers did attend this Inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil event. Now the race was a fantastic race the event started on Wed. with test and tune runs open to all the class'es 4 Alky cars made squirts down the strip. On Thursday there was testing for all the class'es but Alky.

Friday would be open for Qualifying for Super E, Competion elim., TAFC and TAD.

Top Alky Dragster was won by Mike Austin in the Maddern Family dragster he was the guy to beat as Mike set Low e.t.at 5.49 he would also low e.t. and run top speed in every round of Qualifying and elimination's this was Mike's second win in two weeks.

Top Comp was won by local racer Ryan Tietz from Ontario Ca. defeated # 1 Qualifying Joe Roubicek from Westlake Village Ca.

In Super Stock Chuck Rayburn from Castro Vally Ca. was number one guy but in the final Vista California Greg Lunneack in his Chevy II station wagon defeated Rayburn's 1964 Pylmouth Belvedere.

Don Wann in the Rettig Bros. 1973 Pylmouth Sattelite was # 1 Q
Super Elim. was won by John Richardson in a 2000 Victory dragster defeated Tim Height in his 2002 Beckley dragster.

Ishimaru Thunders to Win and new IHBA Top Fuel record on Mission Bay

By Mark & Ron Westfall
Photos By James Drew, Marc Brown & Gil Rebilias

For the past few seasons the Top Fuel Hydro racers of the IHBA have gained a reputation of being a “hit or mostly miss” class. While the Top Alcohol Hydros consistently blasted down the liquid quarter mile with picture perfect mid 5 second passes at speeds of 230 mph, the Top Fuel guys struggled to iron out new boat / twin drive combinations. The fuelers began to show signs of resurgence during the summer swing thru Augusta and Marble Falls, but the assault on the record books at last weekends Thunderboat Regatta in San Diego, California surprised even the most astute drag boat observers. On Sunday afternoon as the last rooster tail settled the Top Fuel racers had firmly re-established themselves as the true “ KINGS of the Sport”.

For the first time an agreement between the Thunderboat Regatta committee and the IHBA was reached to ensure undisturbed water and “headliner” status for the professional drag boat classes. In the past it became common sight for a group of 35 foot Unlimited Hydros, or one of the many other organizations involved in this huge event, racing in water shared with the evil handling drag boats. The risk of hitting a “roller” or racing in rough conditions often scared away many competitors. With the agreement in hand, and the prospects of running at sea level in traction rich dense water, the IHBA racers filled the pits with the largest boat count in the “invitation only” event history.

The conditions for Saturday morning’s first qualifier were absolutely perfect. Temperature at 70 degrees, lightly blowing ocean air, and a corrected altitude reading of 200 feet BELOW sea level. Mission Bay was calm, and as promised only the Top fuel Hydros, at the holding rope, occupied the water. At 10:AM with over 100,000 enthusiastic boat racing fans focusing on the Crown Point portion of the venue Rex Childers in “Whiskey River II” faced off with Daryl Ehrlich in the “Berryman Bullet”, and at the green Ehrlich lifted the blower while Childers launched into a thunderous wheelstand only to come down slightly off course, and Childers wisely shut off to a 8.43 e.t @ 53 MPH pass. Points leader John Haas in Lou Osmon’s “Speed Sport Special” then lined up with Torrance, CA driver Dale Ishimaru in Eddie Knox’s “Problem Child”. Less than 5 seconds after the green lights flash, IHBA drag boat racing history was made, as the two boats locked in an earth shaking, crowd erupting 4.762 e.t. at 241.30 mph for Haas, and a 4.767 at 234.58 mph for Ishimaru with a two thousands of a second margin at the finish line. The significance of the race included the first ever side by side 4 second time slips, the second and third quickest e.t.’s ever, the closest Top Fuel race, and two drivers putting a leg (needing a second run within 1%) on the late John Hipwell’s 4.90 e.t record in Ron Braaksma’s “Madness”. While the crowd continued to buzz, Glen Wilson in the radical “Toxic Rocket” from San Francisco, readied for a qualifying attempt along side multi time World Champion Greg Tedesco in the Reno based, Roger Way tuned “Loose Cannon”. The fans were again treated to a great side by side battle as Wilson blasted to the forth quickest pass ever, a great 4.80 e.t. @ 234.02 mph pass , and Tedesco was close behind with a smooth 5.08, 217.96 opener. Three pairs into the opening session, and three boats were poised to snatch the record. One boat remained on the rope, and that one was reining World Champion Jerry Kutz sitting in the world’s fastest (254 mph) boat, the Laughlin Bay Marina Resort “Plumb Crazy”. The 2005 season has been a disappointing one for Kutz, and his first run ended with more frustration. The boat was in gear at the start, and slowly crept to the starting line as the tree came down. At the hit the boat dropped cylinders and limped to an off pace 5.43 @ 203.52 run. Bad turned to worse as the parachutes failed to deploy and Kutz ended up on the Government protected marshland. With the low tide quickly arriving it became apparent that “Plumb Crazy” was done for the day, and would have to be retrieved later that night (at high tide).

The Top Fuel pits were buzzing as the crews prepared for their next attempt scheduled for 4:30 PM. Racers and fans alike were anticipating record breaking performances as the IHBA officials ordered Top Fuel to, “Warm Up”. Six boats were ready (“Plumb Crazy” in the marsh) and the crew chiefs set the boats on “kill”, and the nitro percentage into the high 90’s. At 4:PM Shortly after the yellow nitro clouds dissipated, the big boys had arrived in the lanes, and there appeared to be a problem. The Unlimited / Unlimited Light portion of the show was way behind schedule, and unfortunately did not live up to their promise of being off the water by 4:30 PM. With a strict 5:30 curfew there was no way to run the last session of the professional class drag boats. Racers and fans were sent home disappointed, but with all the fuelers ready (Kutz’s crew engaging in an all night thrash) Sunday’s first round looked to be one of the best ever.

On a picture perfect Sunday morning “Racers for Christ” chaplain Jim Jack opened with the morning invocation, followed by the playing of the national anthem. At it’s conclusion the engines roared to life as Ehrlich in the “Berryman” boat prepared to challenge Ishimaru in the Larry Bless sponsored “Problem Child”. Ehrlich nailed a perfect .000 light , and the “Bullet” was on a great run, when the prop shaft let go, and Ehrlich did a masterful job of saving the boat. Ishimaru blasted by, coupling a great .048 reaction with a record back up run of 4.77 @ 245.72 mph to Ehrlich’s hair raising 5.41 @ 155.30 mph. The Knox/ Ishimaru combination not only claimed the e.t. record, but also were close to the 245.76 speed record, held since 2001 by Duane Patton’s “Wildside”. Haas then elected to save parts, and after a great launch shut the Amos Saterlee tuned “Speed Sport” down to a 9.76 pass. The next pair of Childers vs. Wilson ended in controversy as Wilson’s “Toxic Rocket” stormed down track, and appeared to be the winner over the again crossed up “Whiskey River”. The crowd anticipated another great number to be posted on the Lucas Oil scoreboard from the “Rocket” (many thought it was better than the earlier 4.80), but no time appeared and the win light was in Childers lane. IHBA determined that the “Toxic Rocket” leaped over the starting beams (causing no e.t. to be recorded) but was the clear winner. Owner Jay Haroutunian and the “Whiskey River” team asked for a re-run, but IHBA officials stood by their decision, and Wilson would move on. Tedesco then ended round one with another impressive, if not spectacular, 5.07 @ 220mph run, over the once again hard luck Kutz who exploded a motor just past the starting line. The semi finals would feature Haas vs. Tedesco and Wilson vs. Ishimaru. Tedesco, realizing he was at a performance disadvantage, pushed the tree a little too hard and red- lighted away a nice 5.06 @ 229 mph run against the powerful “Speed Sport” boat. Haas became the second victim of the timing system, and was not given an e.t or speed on a run that looked as good as his earlier 4.76. Both boats failed to get the chutes out in time and both ended up in the marshland. While the “Speed Sport” crew tried to get the boat back to water, they watched as Ishimaru thundered to another great 4.7 pass, this one a 4.78 @ 241 mph over a troubled Wilson. Wilson’s loss and Haas’ win gave the points leading “Speed Sport” gang a 342 point advantage with only the season ending World Finals remaining. While the “Problem Child” crew readied their fueler for the finals, the “SSS” gang was still trying to retrieve their beached craft. At 3:PM IHBA officials informed the “Problem Child” team that they needed to be in the lanes by 4:PM. With no sign of the “Speed Sport” it appeared that Eddie Knox and the “Problem Child” would solo for their first ever Top Fuel win. At 3:25PM the “Speed Sport” rolled into the pits (it was rumored that 30+ crewmen from several teams CARRIED the boat to the water), and as they rolled by the “Problem Child” camp screamed out “Wait for us Eddie”. Knox and his team assured The Lou Osman “Speed Sport” team that they would wait as long as possible. Amos Saterlee determined that only oil, fuel, and a quick valve check could be accomplished, and at 3:55 PM the thunder of the red “Speed Sport” firing in the pits was heard throughout the venue. The two boats were in the water shortly after 4:PM. The bay was calm, and as the lights came down both boats leapt from the rope, but the “Speed Sports” nose dug in, and as he shut down Ishimaru drove away to an early shut off 5.22 @ 169mph win. The “Problem Child” team with consecutinve runs of 4.767 (world record), 4.77, and 4.78 had turned in the greatest weekend in Top Fuel Hydro history, and established themselves as the team to beat going into the season ending World Finals. With 14 Top Fuel boats entered it should be a WAR!!!!!!

2005 Automobile Club of California 14th NHRA Caifornia Hot Rod Reunion
Sep 30, 2005

The Fourteenth annual NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California, featuring top nostalgia drag racers competing in such categories as Top Fuel, Junior Fuel, Supercharged Gassers, A/FX as well as a variety of exhibition entries. The weekend will included hundreds of street rods, customs, and muscle cars as well as the Reunion Swap Meet, Manufacturers Midway and lots of celebrities. Friday night is the CHRR Reception in the DoubleTree Hotel ballroom, and Saturday features the Pit Pass Barbecue. Plus the sensational "Cacklefest"-See and hear more than 30 historic race cars push-started and then lined up side by side where they all cackle at the same time and light up the night!

Here are some unedited photos from Friday Sept. 30th 2005 14th AAA NHRA CHRR.

This event was a fantastic event like always the Great Steve Gibbs and NHRA Museum Greg Sharp ran a perfect event again when this idea for this event was created by Steve Gibbs, Bernie and his
Wife P.J. Partridge along with a few others thought that retired drag racers racing industry manufactures. Guys and Gals who had raced in the past some of them
Still had there race cars sitting in there garage's. Well after talking To Wally Parks

the founder of NHRA National Hot Rod Assn. they said this would make a great way to raise money for the NHRA museum located at the L.A. County fairgrounds in Pomona Ca. along with AAA of Southern California started the

California Hot Rod Reunion it was only going to be a one time Gathering of Geezers. As you can see in the title this is the 14th one. I have been to every one and each year NHRA Museum gives out silver Wally's to selected members of drag racing past which his a really been great thing to honor those who helped build the sport of drag racing in the beginning years to still being involved in drag racing today! A safety legend, a performance instructor, a photographer, a chassis maker and the first woman to win a National Eliminator title are among those named honorees for the 14th Annual NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California, September 30-October 2 at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

This year’s honorees are Leon Fitzgerald, Dave Wallace, Dick Landy, Shirley Shahan, Bill Simpson and Dave Uyehara. The Grand Marshal will be Dale Armstrong. They will be feted on Fri., September 30 during a reception at the DoubleTree Hotel, host hotel for the event.

Grand Marshal Dale Armstrong won twelve NHRA National events with a series of alcohol-burning dragsters, fuel altereds and funny cars during the 1970s. But the 1975 Winston Pro Comp champ and former Funny Car National Record Holder is perhaps best known for his mechanical prowess. As crew chief for Kenny Bernstein, he tuned the Budweiser King to four NHRA Funny Car Championships in the 1980s as well as Kenny’s first 300-mph pass in 1992 at Gainesville. His driving career dates back to the early 1960s in his native Canada and he was named Number Ten on NHRA’s all-time Top 50 Drivers list during NHRA’s 50th Anniversary season in 2000.

Leon Fitzgerald, best known as the driver of the famous Pure Heaven Fuel Altered, one of the first racers to successfully use the big block Chevrolet, was part of the National Fuel Altered Tour in the late 1960s and early 70s that included Leroy Chadderton in the Magnificent 7, the Marcellus and Borsch Winged Express, Henry Harrison in Nolan and Pritchard’s Beaver Hunter and Don Green’s Rat Trap and introduced the exciting Fuel Altereds to fans all across the country.

Dick Landy’s name was synonymous with Mopar, even though he started his drag racing career in Fords, from the early ‘60s through the mid-‘70s, He was a pioneer in the days of altered wheelbase factory experimentals that led directly to the current Funny Cars. When Landy reached 196 mph on fuel, Chrysler Product Planning decided they’d seen enough and set up a series of Performance Clinics at showrooms throughout the country. Landy was selected as the Dodge representative. In 1967 alone, Landy conducted more than 70 clinics for 50,000 people in 29 states. Landy made a great many friends for Mopar and raced as many as seven different cars in a single season. In the early ‘70s, he helped pioneer the Pro Stock category.

Shirley Shahan won Stock Eliminator at the ’66 Winternationals, becoming the first woman to win an Eliminator title at an NHRA National event. This pioneering effort made it possible for her to become one of the sport’s first female professional racers. She began her career racing a ’58 Chevy and won the Super Stock class at the first Bakersfield March Meet in 1959. In 1965, with some backing from Chrysler, she and then-husband H. L. Shahan bought a Plymouth Super Stocker. A Plymouth public relations man came up with the Drag-On-Lady title that stuck throughout her career. She toured the country for four years, running both Super Stock and injected match races. In 1969 she was offered a factory AMC Super Stock and eventually a Pro Stock when the class was created.

Bill Simpson began his drag racing career with an injected fuel dragster and began manufacturing drag chutes in his garage in Redondo Beach as a second job to supplement his job at the movie studios. The demand for his products became so great that he expanded his business to include fire suits, seat belts and other safety equipment. By the 1970s he was able to live a lifelong dream racing Indy cars. It was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that he performed his famous publicity stunt by setting himself on fire while wearing one of his own suits. He eventually became the largest manufacturer of safety equipment in the industry before selling his company and forming a new one called Impact Racing. Over the last four decades, Simpson’s products have literally saved hundreds of racers in all forms of the sport from serious injury or worse.

Dave Uyehara has been a drag racer in Northern California for over forty years. Teamed with Frank Martinez, he began his career in a Jr. Fuel dragster in the mid-‘60s. Since then he has driven and built countless dragster and funny car chassis and in the late ‘80s he was one of the most prominent chassis builders in the sport with a long list of customers including Eddie Hill. Today, his Nostalgia Top Fuel cars are the standard of the sport.

Dave Wallace Sr. took a second job at San Fernando Drag Strip to help raise his growing family and supplement his income as a postal worker in the 1950s. His love of the sport led to his becoming a track reporter for Drag News as well as honing his photography skills. A photo he took in the early ‘60s survived to win an award in the Leslie Lovett Memorial Photo Contest at the 2002 California Hot Rod Reunion. His son, Dave Jr., has continued the tradition started by his father, reporting on drag racing himself for nearly four decades.

Since its inception in 1992, the NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion has offered hot rodders and racers the opportunity to reunite with old friends and reminisce about “the good old days.” The Reunion includes competition on the racetrack, a car show, a chance for fans to meet the legends and stars of the sport, a barbeque and the highly popular “Cacklefest,” which involves early-days-style front-engine dragsters being push-started, then all gathered together on the drag strip starting line with engines running or ‘cackling.”

The Reunion represents a unique confluence of hot rodding and drag racing, bringing to life the story of high performance motorsports and preserving and extending the history.

I have seen some great racers from the past who I only got to read about or I was able to see drag race myself here on the west coast.

“The creation of Cacklefest is obviously one of the highlights,” said Gibbs. “It’s hard to believe that nearly 100 such cars are now in existence, or are in progress.”

“During my 36-year career with NHRA,” said Gibbs, “I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in many of the sport’s major developments, but I have to say that my role in the creation of The California Hot Rod Reunion is probably the thing I am most proud of.”

Sunday Race Day 14th AAA NHRA CHRR
Oct 2, 2005

Saturday night at the 14th Annual AAA NHRA CHRR going into the 2nd round Brad Thompson who just last year at this very event, got his top fuel license at this event.
Brad would take out Scott Mason 5.823 e.t. At 253.54 mph to Scotts up in smoke
7.024 e.t . . . Sean Bellemeur in the Plaza Casino dragster would defeat Mark Hyla
5.948 at 248.48 mph Hyla would be right there with a game 5.967 at 224.04 mph
Rick Williamson in Hot Rod Bills all black dragster Vs Jim Murphy in the WW ll
Dragster Rick would take down Jim 6.13 at 230.76 to Jim’s who went up in smoke
at the hit of the throttle Pete Kaiser’s 5.939 e.t at 253.23 this would be Pete’s first 250 mph run he put Brendon Murry early shut off 6.09 at 222.32 mph Denver Schutz Vs Bill Dunlap Denver would run a 6.024 at 242.52 to Jim’s losing 6.041 at 236.96 mph Adam Sorokin 5.968 244.96 would put the Chevrolet powered dragster of Lee Jennings on the trailer, Lee would run a 6.149 e.t. At 223.21 mph Lee is putting his whole top fuel dragster operation up for sale he is moving over to the Nostalgia funny car next season he will also be running a Hemi next year, Lee would say that engine builder and tuner Ray Zeller will be with him tuning his funny car. In the next pair it would be Rick white Vs Brett Harris Rick would take the win light over Brett 5.97 242 mph to Brett’s losing 6.04 The last pair would be Terry Cox in the Cheetah top fueler would match up against Rick Rogers in the Full Throttle Mag. Special would put Terry on the trailer 5.972 at 247 mph to Terry’s 5.990 e.t.

Sunday would dawn a new day the track would now have the sun beating down on it
Who would be moving on to the semi’s Mark Hyla in the Circuit Breaker would defeat Rick White, in the next match up 5.927 at 232 mph to Whites trailing 6.002 Brad Thompson Vs Rick Rogers losing 5.997 251.11 to Brad’s winning
5.941 251.95 even start and a pretty close race all the way to the stripe. Big mph for both cars and the win light for Thompson. Bad news for Rogers his top fuel dragster slapped the wall after the finish line. It was hard enough that we're rolling the safety equipment and we're stopped for the moment. Initial word is that Rogers he is O.K.
Adam Sorokin in the RB Entertainment dragster would lose to Denver Schutz
Sean Bellemeur would red light away a sure win running a 5.94 to Williamson’s 6.02
In the semi’s Brad Thompson Vs Rick Williamson
Brad would run a 5.987 234.19 mph to Rick’s losing 6.381 171.62 mph it was even start and an even race to half track. But Williamson had problems and was falling back before pulling the chute very early. Thompson takes the win and is in the final.
Mark Hyla would run a 6.145 at 220.58 mph but Denver Schutz would
run a 6.063 223.10
It's Denver Schutz that will face Thompson in the final. Schutz took a huge lead at the hit
And got the win even though he was hurting parts after half track. Lots of smoke and as it
Has oil, in the right lane. We Hope Cullian crew can get the dragster ready for the final
in the final round of the 14th AAA NHRA CHRR it would be anticlimactic as Denver would redlight and Brad will win his first nostalgia top fuel win one year after getting his Lic. Brad will be giving his first trophy to his wife as it was her birthday todayand she was nice enough to let him out of the house for the weekend. I am sure she told him no racing on Thanksgiving or Christmas!

The finals are between the Blown Injected Alcohol dragster of Mike Austin and the Nitro Injected dragster of Kin Bates. These two are both best of class competitors.
This was just weird! Austin takes a close red light and appeared to have lost the race until Bates drifted into the mid-track MPH cone and is DQ'ed. Mike Austin WILL be the AFD Champion.

Famoso Raceway, Bakersfield, CA – The 2005 Goodguys/VRA season came to a rough and tumble end this past weekend at storied Famoso Raceway. Coming into the event, 11 of the 14 class championships were still undecided which provided for an anxious weekend for nostalgia drag racing’s top teams. The weekend was carnage filled with five major incidents, one of which turned sadly fatal when 76 year old Roy Moore of Santa Paula suffered in a crash in C/GAS competition. Moore was flown to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

In Nostalgia Top Fuel action, Upland, California’s Howard Haight won his third Goodguys event title of the season driving Butch Blair’s “Fugowie”dragster. Haight used consistent performances and some luck to advance to the final where he squared off with newly crowned Goodguys/VRA Top Fuel Champion Rick White of San Diego. At the flash of green, Haight streaked to a 5.99 @ 251.04 to defeat White who went up in tire smoke.

The story in the Nostalgia Funny Car division was the record breaking performances of Hawthorne, California’s Larry Pettit. Driving he and partner George Doty’s “Crazy Horse” 1971 Mustang funny car, he became the first driver to ever record a sub-six second run in a Goodguys/VRA-legal Nostalgia Funny Car when he blasted to a 5.928 during qualifying. He backed it up the next day with an even quicker run establishing a new class elapsed time record of 5.927. During Sunday’s eliminations Pettit won the class championship title in dramatic fashion by overtaking points leader Dan Horan Jr. in a semi-final clash. Leaving nothing on the table, the Doty & Pettit team then defeated Nostalgia Funny Car rookie Dennis LaCharite in the final round, running a 6.167 @ 232.25 to LaCharite’s tire spinning 6.468 @ 223.43.

Event A/Fuel and class championship honors went to Claude LaVoie of Sherwood Park Alberta Canada when he ran a 6.492 @ 195.65 in the final to defeat teammate Kin Bates. During qualifying, LaVoie ran the quickest run in class history at 6.179 but he wasn’t able to back up the historic run.

Chris Abbey of Clovis took advantage of the Goodguys/VRA break rule to get back into eliminations after suffering an opening round defeat at the hands of Sean Renteria in AA/GAS competition. When Renteria couldn’t return for the semi-finals, Abbey was re-instated via the break rule and quickly took advantage advancing to his 4th final round of the year. He soundly defeated final round opponent Ronnie Nunes with a 6.613 @ 209 in the trophy dash for his second event win of the season – a season in which he dominated the class with breathtaking performances, running Low ET and Top Speed of every 2005 Goodguys/VRA event. With the win, Abbey and partner George Goshgarian won their first Goodguys AA/GAS class Championship.

The final round of Junior Fuel competition turned scary right at the hit of the throttle for veteran JD Zink of Chico, California. Zink went into a power wheelstand at the flash of the green light which sent his dragster all the way over backwards then barrel rolling several times before coming to a stop against the guardrail. Opponent Stu Sandhaus, who traveled all the way from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to compete here, got his first Goodguys Jr. Fuel win running a 7.065 @ 184.61, but of course all eyes were focused on Zink. Zink was cut from his car and taken via ambulance to Kern Medical Center for observation. He gave an emphatic waive to the prior to being loaded into the ambulance and was conscious and joking with safety officials.

In yet another crash earlier in the day, Mike Boyd escaped serious injury when the fabled “Winged Express” AA/Fuel Altered crashed into the retaining wall during an exhibition run. The car lost the left front wheel and tie rod midway down the track which sent the car left into the retaining wall were it scrubbed off speed but eventually barrel rolled twice before coming to a stop. Boyd was out of the car before safety crews arrived on the scene but the historic race car looked to be sadly destroyed. Late word from team patriarch Al “Mousie” Marcellus is that they will rebuild the machine for next season and beyond.

Other winners at the Goodguys 7th Fuel & Gas Finals were Don Enriquez (Junior Fuel B), Steve Castelli (A/GAS), Don Taros (Nostalgia Eliminator), Dan See (Nostalgia II), Eric Christianson (Nostalgia III), Red McGuiness (B/GAS), John Contreras (C/GAS), Brian Faulk (D/GAS) and Kevin Houmard (Hot Rod Eliminator).

Important Note!
The family of Roy Moore, who died as a result of injuries of a crash at the 7th Fuel & Gas Finals, has requested in lieu of cards and flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society of Ventura County. The Ventura office can be reached by calling (805) 983-8864.

News and Notes for 2006 GoodGuys VRA drag racing

Lee Jennings has hung up his helmet and goggles after 30 years of racing
Lee will no longer be driving but he will now be a a top fuel dragster owner running a chevy powered t/f dragster with Mendy Fry who will be doing double duty driving Jenning’s & Scheele dragster at the Goodguys VRA races and she will still be driving Frank “ RootBeer” Hedges t/f dragster match racing across the country in 2006
Jennings had already sold his t/f dragster two days after the GG finals race. The dragster Mendy will be running is the car Lee Paul drove as an a/fueler this year. Jennings stated he will have both cars shaken down and ready to run by the 2006 GoodGuys March Meet at AAA Famoso AAA AutoClub Raceway.

Lee’s Son Lee Paul will be debuting a brand new Hemi powered Ray Zeller Tuned 1970 Plymouth Barracuda in 2006

There are a number of funny cars being built at this time for GG VRA rules for next year
Danny Pisano is building a Chevrolet Vega in tribute to Joe Pisano word has it there may be two cars in this stable

If anyone has any news about anything being built for the 2006 GoodGuys season please let me know at drewphoto@aol.com it does not matter what class I will include it in my 2006 GG preview story before the 2006 March Meet

Everyone have a safe holidays and I will be looking forward to seeing you at the track next year!

Thanks James

Courtney and Brittany Force
Jan 1, 2005

These photos were taken on a day when John Force rented California Dragway so his daughters could get some one on one instructions from Fast Jack. The girls would take turns running the dragster on Saturday & Sunday. Since this testing, the girls have raced at two div. 7 races. They both have their own dragsters now. The girls got to make a few runs during the Auto Club NHRA POWERade World Finals.
