Fuel Cars Invade Fontana again!!!!! AAA Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway by James Drew. Photos by James Drew & Tim Marshall

The nitro cars returned to the past as in the 1960’s you could see front engine Top Fuel dragsters once raced in Fontana Ca. during the 1960’s it happened every weekend until Fontana drag strip closed Nostalgia drag racing has been around since the early 1980’s NDRA and then GoodGuys but it has been growing bigger ever since in the last few years even bigger.

Jennifer Luna and Rick Rogers wanted to See if enough fans would come out and support this event they figured if this one day event was a success they would try to do a larger race three days worth of nitro burning front engine dragsters and funny cars along with all the other Nostalgia classes.

On this Saturday in April 2007 they got five nitro top fuel dragsters with twelve nitro funny cars to come out and have some fun putting on a drag race in Southern California where drag racing began just a few miles west in Santa Ana airport the late C. J. Hart and if you grew up in So. Cal there was plenty of drag strips. That was then and this is today.

Racer’s have been building Nostalgia aa/fc Nitro funny cars like they raced during the 1970’s at Lions, Irwindale, OCIR and just a stone’s throw from here Auto Club Dragway once stood the Ontario Motor Speedway where NHRA held there World Finals for years before it closed. Saturday dawned a wet surface as it rained Friday night and early Saturday morning, the rain had stopped the track crew were drying the track and getting the starting line ready for these Nitro Warriors! The track crew did a fantastic job getting the track ready and fans started coming in at 7.00 A.M. the fans that came early got to see all the funny cars up close and walk around the pits that had Cackle race cars that John Ewald got to come out and burn some nitro right behind the stands along with some great vendors

This deal was put together by Jennifer Luna and Rick Rogers who is the President of the T/F Assn. and the funny car Assn. but Most of the hard work was put in by Rogers and the Luna’s pulling off this event.

The funny car guys were using this as a point’s race they ran them Chicago Style all the funny cars run twice and the quickest two get to come back for a final round and the points would go out on down the line by your quickest e.t. and making both runs. Joel Gruzen got the NE 1 guys to race as over thirty racers came out to try to qualify for one of the 16 spots for the NE 1 race, others coming out were some a/gas cars and NE 2 and NE 3 racers along with some bracket racers who got to make some test and tune runs but car count was not to be over 150 race cars.

In top fuel only five came out due to a race in northern Calif. at Sacramento Raceway. The top fuel racers put on a great show as Rick Rogers in the Full Throttle News top fuel dragster, Shannon Stuart in his and Bob Richardson’s Circuit Breaker, Troy Green traveled from Purcell Ok. To drive Tom Shelar’s Players Casino dragster, but the two that made the final was Bryan Van Dyke’s R and B Entertainment Top Fuel dragster driven by Adam Sorokin who put a hole shot on Rick White in the White and Neal dragster , Chuck Neal had their top fueler running great and White drove around Sorokin in the lights for the win by one thousand of second over Adams gate job.

13 AA/FC showed up but only 12 would race as Terry Capp who raced top fuel dragsters was getting his funny car license. in the Ron Hodgson and Gordon Jenner Bubble Up Pontiac Firebird that fellow Canadian 240 Gordie Bonin drove for them in the 1970’s helping them out this weekend were a couple of other famous racers being Roland Leong and John Force crew chief Bernie Fedderly was also helping out his home boys from north of the boarder Terry Capp made two runs a ½ track run and a full run he ran low e.t. of the race running a 6.09 e.t. pretty impressive.

Jack Wright also debuted. his brand new Dodge Challenger the Joker. Wright is a former drag boat racer he needs to get his car finished up and get licensed.

The 12 nitro funny cars that ran put on a great show as NHRA POWERade racer Del and Chuck Worsham brought out there recreated Blue Max Ford Mustang II Along with the Revell Pisano & Matsubara Vega of Danny Pisano who built the recreated racer his Uncle Joe Pisano and Danny’s dad ran in the 1970’s if you close your eyes you would think by announcer Mike English you were back at OCIR as this was the first pair of funny cars down the track Chassis Builder and DragRacingOnline.com Jeff Utterback laid a hole shot on Del and got to the finish line first and the fans in the stands went crazy! Jeff ran a 6.345 E.T. at 205 mph as the Blue Max with Worsham running a 6.350 E.T. @ 220.48 mph

The others coming out to race in funny car was John Powers III who was in his Jim Basko tuned Powers Steel Firebird, John never got passed the tree under power as they smoked the hides on both runs, Steve Nichols who won the last race at SIR in Tucson in his quickest and fastest Chevrolet Powered Mill Boys 1971 Camaro Steve had traction trouble on his first run and banged the blower on his second start up and wisely shut it off Steve would get the long distance award Newark Del.

Bob Godfrey was behind the wheel of his and Jeff Gaynor’s Lucas Oil 1969 Camaro , this was his first race back driving as guest driver Ron Capps who was leading the points in Nostalgia F/C Assn and NHRA POWERade points leader took the weekend off to be with his family. Godfrey and Gaynor did not get there nitro car to the finish line under power as they over powered the track.

Nate Bugg in his and Father’s Dodge Challenger were puffing out death smoke from the time they fired up and an intake valve came to rest at the starter’s feet. They killed one piston real bad and messed up a few other parts on their only run I was told that the team was testing a new oil and thought that was the cause of the smoke.

Mike Adams who has backing from John Powers was out with his Corvette with his newer Steve Plueger chassis ran a 6.70 best e.t. and hit the wall, but his headers were the only damage to his Vette.

6th quickest Jim Holtz in Mark Roys “Predator” Plymouth 1971 Road Runner with a 6.46 e.t. @ 229.46 mph next came Mike Savage in nostalgia F/C Assn. President Jim Broome’s speed Sport Special Plymouth Barracuda with a 6.41 at 219.04!

Del Worsham’s Blue Max was next with his 6.35 and 3rd was Utterback who had to leave on family bizz. So Danny Put Rick Roger’s in his famous Revell Chevrolet Vega being tuned by a another name from the past Steve Montrelli the Pisano car was moved down due to Jeff leaving but I am sure he would have loved to been in the car as on Rick’s first pass he launched great but got out of the groove at about 1000 foot mark and wisely shut it off but on his next test and tune run he laid a 6.20 e.t. the best run ever for the new car all the crew had smiles on their face as they loaded up their car and headed back to Long Beach Ca.

Now the quickest two funny cars was Utterback and Steve Romanazi’s Warrior Chevy Vega tuned by Donnie Couch to a 6.235 e.t. at 229.70 mph was headed to the final against the Lee Paul Jennings would run a 6.449 e.t. @ 220 mph in his first run but Lee Paul would drive his Dad’s 1970 dodge Challenger to a 6.203 e.t. at 223.43 mph Ray Zeller Lee Paul’s crew chief had the power tuned just right to take the top spot what looked like a great final round ended up being anti climatic as Steve could not get his Warrior to back up and had to idle it down the track and turn off the track with no one to face LPJ had a single and I am sure he was glad for that as he went into instant tire smoke it looked like a burn out.

Nostalgia NE 1 action the final came down to Don Taros who was cutting some great lights during the racing so his opponent the “Moucher” NE 1 dragster went for the light and red lighted his chance for the Win!

A/gas was won by Ken Moore and his great looking blown 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.

All and All the fans that came out to this one day event race got more then there twenty dollars worth of breathing nitro again in Southern California, this may be the last time we see nostalgia fuel racing at AAA auto Club Dragway @ California Speedway as the neighbors to the north of railroad yard are complaining about the noise Mike Yurick from Ca. Speedway is working on getting a new permit but there could be a fight on the tracks hands.

I for one hope they get there permit as the person’s making the most noise live in a industrial area of Fontana and are ones who cannot vote in elections which as we know is what counts.

The fans that did come out that I talked to have a great time. I know the racers had fun too. The only mishap was a crash by Bobby Lee driving the Soul Train Gang Racing blown 23 T Bobby was unhurt but the same cannot be said of the race car.

There are also going be a change in track management of the drag strip as Dave and Kathy Danish are going back to Tucson SIR they were made an offer to return to their old track from a group of racers who have taken over the lease of the track from Tucson Fairgrounds and wanted Dave and Kathy back.

The whole crew at AAA Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway. From the Safety workers to the whole drag crew including myself is going to miss them very much as they have always treated us and myself like their extended family.

The last event were Nitro or Alky cars will be able to run until the Noise permit is worked out will be the First weekend of May for the NHRA Lucas Oil division seven series race. Let’s Hope they get the permit trouble worked out the AAA Auto Club Dragway will still be open for Pacific street car assn. races and NHRA Summit series races along with other events that will continue but there will not be any nitro or alky races. Please write the track and support them and let them know that you want to see Nitro and Alky cars race in Southern California please be nice as Ca. Speedway’s Mike Yurick will be working towards getting the permits etc. Again let them know you want help support the track!

The others coming out to race in funny car was John Powers III who was in his Jim Basko tuned Powers Steel Firebird, John never got passed the tree under power as they smoked the hides on both runs.

Nostalgia NE 1 action the final came down to Don Taros who was cutting some great lights during the racing so his opponent the “Moocher” NE 1 dragster went for the light and red lighted his chance for the Win!

A/gas was won by Ken Moore and his great looking blown 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.

Saturday dawned a wet surface as it rained Friday night and early Saturday morning, the rain had stopped and the track crew were drying the track and getting the starting line ready for these Nitro Warriors! The track crew did a fantastic job getting the track ready and fans started coming in at 7.00 A.M. the fans that came early got to see all the funny cars up close and walk around the pits that had Cackle race cars that John Ewald got to come out and burn some nitro right behind the stands along with some great vendors.

@ 229.46 mph

Next came Mike Savage in nostalgia F/C Assn.

All the fans that came out to this one day event race got more then there twenty dollars worth of breathing nitro again in Southern California, this may be the last time we see nostalgia fuel racing at AAA auto Club Drag way @ ca. Speedway as the neighbors to the north of railroad yard are complaining about the noise Mike Yurick from Ca. Speedway is working on getting a new permit but there could be a fight on the tracks hands I for one hope they get there permit as the person’s making the most noise live in a industrial area of Fontana and are ones who cannot vote in elections which as we know is what counts. The fans that did come out that I talked to had a great time. I know the racers had fun too.

The only mishap was a crash by Bobby Lee driving the Soul Train Gang Racing blown 23 T Bobby was unhurt but the same cannot be said of the race car.

There are also going be a change in track management of the drag strip as Dave and Kathy Danish are going back to Tucson SIR they were made an offer to return to their old track a group of racers who have taken over the lease of the track from Tucson Fairgrounds and wanted Dave and Kathy back.

Speedway’s Mike Yurick will be working on the permit process.

@ 220.48 mph The others coming out to race in funny car was John Powers III who was in his Jim Basko tuned Powers Steel Firebird, John never got passed the tree under power as they smoked the hides on both runs, Steve Nichols who won the last race at SIR in Tucson in his quickest and fastest Chevrolet Powered Mill Boys 1971 Camaro Steve had traction trouble on his first run and banged the blower on his second start up and wisely shut it off Steve would get the long distance award Newark Del.
