For the last few years that I have covered this fun filled one day car culture event draws all kinds of automotive enthusiast’s of every kind from low riders to rat rods there are K@@L rides to check out the gates opened up at 6.00 A M and the freeway was back up for over one mile when I got their at 5.40 as I drove by the exit and the long line of people waiting to get in the gates to open up at Irwindale drag strip. I drove up to the end of the 605 freeway and flipped a u turn and went into the track from the other direction. Despite the forecast of rain and it being very cold the people came out in droves to have Mooneyes style of fun! There really were no drag races per say as most the drag racers got at the most three hits each if that many they got so many participants that wanted to drag race that they stopped giving out tech cards due to just to many cars showed up the drag race time trials came to stop once for rain and once for a crash of a street rod that lost control and hit the wall they then ran until about 1.30 P.M. and as they say that’s all folks as they got ready for pin striping contest, Mooneyes Auction for charity and Pin Up Girls contest which drew over 50 fine looking Betty’s but the limited down to 15 to say that the fans packed all sides of the stage for this year’s contest and of course this is one of my favorite parts of this Xmas party put on by fine people at Moon Racing Equipment. There was over 50 vendors selling their fine products, along with a lot pin striped art work and t shirts . This year’s event had plenty of bitchen Chevrolets and Mopars along with Fords & Mercury. If you could not make it this year you need to make it out to this event always packs the grandstands and car show area. The Traction was fantastic as a lot of the racers who did make runs put a lot of cars on the rear bumper and doing the highest wheelies that had ever done. The Cacklefest only had about eight cars this year, but for the first time ever Steve Gibbs got to be push started in a top fuel dragster of John Ewald has been trying to get Steve into his Bank America dragster but at one of the Hot Rod Reunions but Gibbs has always been way too busy to be able to do it. Steve had a plenty of family to cheer him on as his grand kids wife and daughter Cindy got the thrill of watching him have some fun Steve got push started down the track and came back up the return road stopping a few times in front of crowded fence line and then stopped right in front of his daughter and the grand kids Steve had a giant smile on his face. John Ewald even let mysef get into his dragster and cackle it up in the pits once last time before putting the dragster into the box for the winter, yes it was cool Ewald offered me a mask and I just laughed at him I said no thanks I like my Nitro Raw!
Well this will be my last event for 2008 and I can hardly wait for the 2009 year to get here I will at track for the big bucks bracket race at Auto Club Dragway Jan 3rd & 4th then a couple weeks after that will be the beginning of the 09 testing to begin Yea Nitro Baby!

- I went to my storage locker today I found a few photos from years gone by some of these images were taken many years ago at Orange County International Raceway, Irwindale, Bakersfield and LACR plus some images from other drag strips across the country the older photos I took these mostly in the pits because I shot super 8 film during this time period due to my camera having a fixed 50 mil lens. The jackson brothers have been storing my 26 reels of super 8 film in there film locker. Hmmm I will be adding a few photos here when time permits. James
