Chrysler looks crowded, but I had plenty of room!
It is mighty quiet inside the Chrysler! Even under sharpest acceleration, practically no engine sound can be heard from the engine compartment. As with another Chrysler car I have driven, superior sound-insulation and design are at work here. The Chrysler 300 is the epitome of “modern,” with its extremely smooth slipstream design - window frames, door openings, headlight fitting, tail lights, and every other aspect of the car’s out skin, these are smooth-plus! Even the elimination of radio antennas and wind-noisy vent windows likely contributes to the quietness in most modern cars. Problem is, it makes it EASIER to hear the engine cutting loose during acceleration, but not so in this car!
Apparently body insulation takes care of this nicely. But this quietness of engine and body-envelope airflow leaves only one noise left, which is that of the tires. In the Chrysler 300, as with a Chrysler Concord I have driven, you can always hear the tires “shushing.!” And when you hit a bump, the sound, apparently via vibration, goes right through the otherwise-quiet car! The Chrysler 300 driver will really hear every road-surface noise!
And while on the bumpy road let us be honest. The Chrysler is one hard-riding car. If you want a velvety ride, this is NOT it! Today’s automotive-design trend (fashion) seems to be prescribing high-profile, tires mounted on really big diameter wheels. The space between your solid rim of the wheel and the concrete is getting smaller and smaller these days. I have seen some newer cars on the road lately that have as little downward compression tire space as a balloon-tire bicycle! It seems odd to the Auto-Phile that car companies today spend a lot of money, time and development energy on designing excellent suspension systems, then design in wheel and tire systems that give a really crummy ride. Here is one area where the old Kaiser has the upper hand. The bumps just don’t get to your butt as much in the Kaiser, and you usually don’t hear them, either! (Except for that bumper rattle up front that I have not fixed yet!)
