Schon im Jahre 778 erstmals in einer Urkunde genannt, ist die im Nordosten des Landkreises Biberach gelegene Stadt Laupheim früher als jede andere oberschwäbische Stadt und jede andere Gemeinde des Landkreises Biberach urkundlich erwähnt.

Carl Laemmle - von Laupheim nach Hollywood
Carl Laemmle (geb. 17.01.1867 in Laupheim, gest. 24.09.1939 in Beverly Hills), ein Pionier, der Filmgeschichte schrieb, hat aus einer verschlafenen Kleinstadt in Kalifornien namens Hollywood der Welt größte Filmmetropole geschaffen. Er produzierte über 9 000 Filme und blieb trotz seines Weltruhmes ein Leben lang seiner Heimatstadt eng verbunden.

Nach abgeschlossener Kaufmannslehre trat er 1884, gerade 17-jährig, zusammen mit einem Schulfreund die Reise ins ferne Amerika an. Im Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten musste er rasch erkennen, dass aller Anfang schwer ist. Er begann zwar nicht mit dem legendären Job eines Tellerwäschers, doch Laufbursche in einem Drugstore für vier Dollar pro Woche und andere Aushilfsjobs waren nicht wesentlich attraktiver.

Erst mit 39 Jahren geriet er 1906 eher zufällig ins Filmgeschäft. In einem ehemaligen Tanzlokal wurden Stummfilme gezeigt. Diese sogenannten Nickelodeons hatten es ihm angetan, bereits nach zwei Jahren gehörten ihm etwa die Hälfte der Kinos in Chicago.

Im Juni 1912 gründete er durch den Zusammenschluss mehrerer unabhängiger Filmgesellschaften die Universal Film Manufacturing Company. Ab 1913 ließ er nahe Los Angeles im San-Fernando-Tal eine ganze Studiostadt, Universal City, erbauen, die am 15. März 1915 glanzvoll eröffnet wurde.

In den neuen Studios entstanden unzählige Wildwest-, Grusel- und Horrorfilme. Nach und nach produzierte Carl Laemmle immer anspruchsvollere und teurere Filme, darunter jene, die Universal berühmt machten: “Der Glöckner von Notre Dame”(1923),”The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), “King of Jazz” (1930). Für seinen wohl bedeutendsten und zugleich umstrittensten Film “Im Westen nichts Neues” wurde Laemmle 1930 mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet. Im Zuge der großen Weltwirtschaftskrise geriet auch die Universal in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten. Trotz verschiedener Rettungsversuche musste er 1936 sein Unternehmen verkaufen.

Über all seinen Erfolgen vergass er nie seine Herkunft. Regelmäßig reiste er in seine Heimatstadt und bei keinem Besuch kam er mit leeren Händen. “Das Glück hat mir gelacht,” wird Laemmle 1926 in einem US-Magazin zitiert. “Das Wenigste, das ich tun kann, ist, es dort auszuteilen, wo es das meiste Gute bewirkt”.

Von dieser Haltung profitierten regelmäßig die von Kriegslasten und sozialer Not gebeutelten Menschen in Laupheim. Er richtete eine Armenstiftung ein, spendete an Hochwasseropfer, israelitische Gemeinde und Verschönerungsverein, für Kinder- und Armenspeisung, einen Turnhallenbau und ein öffentliches Bad im Schulhaus. Die Stadt dankte ihm mit der Verleihung der Ehrenbürgerwürde sowie der Benennung der Carl-Laemmle-Straße und des Carl-Laemmle-Gymnasiums.

Mit der Machtergreifung der Nazis änderte sich alles. Laemmle durfte nicht mehr nach Deutschland einreisen. Sein Antikriegsfilm “Im Westen nichts Neues” wurde 1933 verboten.

Die Vorgänge in seinem Vaterland verfolgte Carl Laemmle mit großer Aufmerksamkeit. Er unternahm alles, um den bedrängten, entrechteten Juden in Deutschland zu helfen. Ohne Bürgschaften, sogenannte affidavits, das heißt, ohne die Garantie eines amerikanischen Staatsbürgers, notfalls die Versorgung des Flüchtlings zu übernehmen, konnte niemand in die USA einwandern. Mehr als 300 solcher Bürgschaften wurden von Carl Laemmle übernommen und damit viele Menschen vor dem Nazi-Terror und dem sicheren Tod in den Konzentrationslagern bewahrt. Carl Laemmle hat in seinem Leben Großes bewirkt. Diese humanitäre Tat war seine größte Leistung.

Im Museum “zur Geschichte von Christen und Juden” wird das Leben und Wirken des Hollywood-Pioniers und berühmtesten Sohn Laupheims ausführlich dokumentiert und gewürdigt.

Im Mittelalter günstig in der Nähe der beiden Hauptverkehrswege zwischen Ulm und dem Bodensee bzw. zwischen Alb und Illertal gelegen, wurde der Ort Hauptort und Gerichtsstätte im Rammagau. Schon im 10. Jahrhundert besaß Laupheim eine Pfarrkirche mit Filialen. 926 verwüsteten die Hunnen bei ihrem Einfall die ganze Umgegend. Eine Burg gab es schon um 1100. Nach dem Zusammenbruch des Stauferreichs kam die Veste und Ortschaft in den Besitz der Trucksessen von Waldsee, die zusammen mit ihrem übrigen oberschwäbischen Besitz diese Herrschaft 1331 an das österreichische Haus Habsburg verkauften. Das verpfändete sie 1362 an die Herren von Ellerbach und belehnte 1407 diese Ritterfamilie sodann mit Burg, Dorf und Kirchensatz. Die Lehensrechte blieben bis 1805 bei Österreich.
