Der Karneval in Venedig (ital. Carnevale di Venezia) hat eine sehr lange Tradition. Er wurde von Napoleon verboten und erst ca. 1980 in seiner jetzigen Form auf Betreiben der Tourismusindustrie wiederbelebt.Es gibt auch ein berühmtes Gemälde von Andreas Pirot, Arlecchinos Einzug in Venedig (um 1745 )Er dauert genau 10 Tage, beginnt am Wochenende vor dem "normalen" Karneval und endet am Aschermittwoch. Jedes Jahr findet er unter einem bestimmten Motto statt.Neben den klassischen Masken aus Venedig (bautà und andere), den Masken der commedia dell'arte und historischen Kostümen finden sich dort immer mehr Fantasiemasken (auch "Tüllmonster" genannt) von z. T. hoher künstlerischer Qualität. Die Masken erfüllen meist den Zweck sich zu zeigen bzw. gesehen zu werden und ziehen daher auch zahlreiche Schaulustige und Fotografen aus aller Herren Länder an.Während des Karnevals steigen die Preise in Venedig zumindest rund um den Markusplatz beträchtlich; oftmals sind auch die Hotels schon Wochen vorher ausgebucht.
