Die Republik Südafrika ist ein Staat an der Südspitze Afrikas. Das Land mit der Hauptstadt Pretoria liegt zwischen 22 und 35 Grad südlicher Breite sowie zwischen 17 und 33 Grad östlicher Länge. Im Süden und Südosten grenzt das Land an den Indischen Ozean und im Westen an den Atlantischen Ozean. Im Norden liegen die Nachbarländer Namibia, Botsuana und Simbabwe, östlich davon Mosambik und Swasiland. Das Königreich Lesotho ist eine Enklave, wird also vollständig von Südafrika umschlossen.
Südafrika ist ein ethnisch sehr gemischtes Land, in dem Menschen aller Hautfarben leben und das aufgrund dieser Vielfalt oft als Regenbogennation bezeichnet wird. Da die verschiedenen Volksgruppen aber nicht immer konfliktfrei nebeneinander lebten, beherrschten ethnische Probleme und Unruhen zwischen der weißen Bevölkerungsminderheit und der schwarzen Mehrheit die Geschichte und Politik des Landes. Die National Party, Partei der niederländisch-stämmigen Buren, installierte nach ihrem Wahlsieg im Jahr 1948 das weltweit geächtete System der Apartheid, das jedoch schon vorher unter der politischen Führung der britisch-stämmigen Staatsführung ihren Anfang nahm und bis kurz nach der Wahl des gemäßigten Präsidenten Frederick Willem de Klerk Bestand hatte. Die Wende in der Politik im Jahr 1990 wurde durch den jahrelangen Kampf der schwarzen Bevölkerungsmehrheit unter ihrem politischen Führer Nelson Mandela, der auch 1994 zum ersten schwarzen Präsidenten des Landes gewählt wurde, erreicht.
