Nordernay auf Sand gebaut-
Mit dem Stillstand des Meeresspiegelanstieges um die Zeitenwende wurden größere Sandmassen küstenwärts verfrachtet. Dieser Sand überlagerte die vorherige Landoberfläche. Am Wattrand vorhandene Riffe und Platen wuchsen durch den ständigen Sandtransport durch Strömung und Brandung des Meeres auf, fielen bei Ebbe kurz trocken, und der trockene Sand wurde durch den Wind weiter transportiert und zu Dünen aufgeworfen. Pionierpflanzen und typische Dünenvegetation stabilisierten den Sand. Die Ostfriesischen Inseln sind demnach keine Reste ehemaligen Festlandes - wie die Nordfriesischen Inseln - sondern als Düneninseln Neubildungen des Meeres; entstanden und erhalten durch die ständige Sandzufuhr.
Hallo-Norderney mißt ca. 14,5 km in der Länge (die erlaufend sich aber ganz schön hinziehen) und an der breitesten Stelle 2,5 km. Rund 6000 Einwohner hat das Meldeamt registriert, nicht wenige davon sind aber sog. Butennörderneer, solche, die 'auf dem Kontinent' studieren und arbeiten oder sonst dort einer wohlgefälligen Tätigkeit nachgehen, aber immer wieder nach Hause kommen.

Norderneyer grüßen sich untereinander mit einem gesungenen 'Heee'! Darin unterscheiden sie sich wohltuend von den Festlandsostfriesen, die zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit 'Moin-Moin' ausstoßen um sich der gegenseitigen Zuneigung zu versichern. Bitte verwechseln Sie es nicht. Insulaner im Exil verfallen auch Jahre nach ihrer Ausbürgerung noch automatisch in den Eingeborenen-Slang, wenn sie etwa miteinander telefonieren.
