1847 Margarete Steiff wird am 24. Juli in Giengen an der Brenz bei Ulm geboren.

1849 Margarete Steiff erkrankt mit 1½ Jahren an Kinderlähmung und bleibt ihr Leben lang an den Rollstuhl gefesselt.

1865 Nach unzähligen Arztbesuchen und Kuraufenthalten findet sie sich mit ihrem Schicksal ab. Trotzdem verliert Margarete Steiff nie die Freude am Leben.

1877 Gründung eines Filzkonfek- tionsgeschäftes, in dem Margarete Steiff selbstgenähte Kleidungsstücke und Haushaltsartikel verkauft.

1880 Offizielles Gründungsdatum der Margarete Steiff GmbH. Entstehung des ersten Steiff Tieres - ein Elefant aus Filz, der als Nadelkissen dienen soll. Der Elefant ist das erste weich gestopfte textile Spieltier. Dadurch ist er auch bei Kindern sehr schnell als Spielzeug beliebt.

1886 5.170 Elefanten werden verkauft und weitere Tiere ergänzen das Sortiment. Das Familienunternehmen wächst. Fritz Steiff, Margaretes Bruder, kümmert sich um den Verkauf.

1892 Der erste Steiff Katalog erscheint, um den Kunden einen Überblick über das inzwischen entstandene Sortiment zu verschaffen.

1893 Die erste Messe: Erstmals werden Steiff Filzspielwaren in Leipzig auf der Frühjahrsmesse präsentiert. Die Firma wird als Spielwarenfabrik ins Handelsregister eingetragen.

1895 Erste ausländische Geschäftsbeziehungen werden zu Harrods in London aufgenommen.

1897 Richard Steiff, der Neffe von Margarete, tritt ins Unternehmen ein.

1849 Margarete Steiff was taken ill with polio at the age of 1½ and spent the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair.

1865 After innumerable visits to the doctor and health resorts, Margarete Steiff finally came to terms with her illness, but she never stopped enjoying life.

1877 Margarete Steiff sold garments and household articles that she had made herself in a newly formed ready-to-wear felt clothing establishment.

1880 Official date of formation of Margarete Steiff GmbH. The first Steiff animal was created - an elephant made of felt, that was intended for use as a pincushion. The elephant was the first soft-filled fabric toy animal and soon became very popular with children, who enjoyed playing with it.

1886 5.170 elephants were sold and other animals were added to the product range. The family business expanded. Fritz Steiff, Margarete's brother, assumed responsibility for sales.

1892 The first Steiff catalogue was published to give the customers an overview of the products that had been added to the range.

1893 The first trade fair: Steiff felt toys were presented for the first time at the Spring Fair in Leipzig. The company was entered in the commercial register as a toy factory.

1895 The first foreign business contacts were established with Harrods in London.

1897 Richard Steiff, Margarete's nephew, joined the company.
