Die Chronik:
Erste Besiedelungsspuren auf der Insel Mainau reichen bis 3000 vor Christus zurück. Eine bewegte Geschichte folgt. Schwerpunkte der Geschichte sind Deutschherrenorden und 30-jähriger Krieg. Erster Anbau seltener Pflanzen von Fürst Nikolaus Esterházy. Es folgt Großherzog Friedrich I., ein weiterer Pflanzenliebhaber. Danach wechselnde Besitzer aus verschiedenen Königs- und herzoglichen Häusern. Bis 1932: Prinz Lennart Bernadotte übernahm die Verwaltung der Mainau und fand dort sein neues Zuhause. Die Neugestaltung der Insel Mainau beginnt.

Um 3000 v.Chr. Aus dieser Zeit früher Besiedelung des Bodenseeufers stammt auch die aus sechs Häusern bestehende Siedlung, die in den 30er Jahren unseres Jahrhunderts am Südufer der Mainau freigelegt wird.
15 v. Chr. Das von den Rätern bewohnte Land rund um den Bodensee wird römisch, darunter auch die Mainau. Hier befinden sich ein Kastell, auch eine Schiffswerft und eine Flottenbasis des Feldherrn Tiberius.
5./6. Jh. n. Chr. Die strategisch wertvolle Mainau wird alemannisches Herzogsgut und später Teil eines fränkischen, von Bodman aus verwalteten Königsguts.
724 Die Mainau geht neben anderen Landstreifen des Bodanrück als Geschenk an das mächtige Kloster Reichenau.
1271 Die Mainau wird von dem auf der Reichenau ansässigen Arnold von Langenstein eigenmächtig an die Deutschherren weiter verschenkt.
1272 Das ursprünglich in Sandegg (Thurgau/Schweiz) ansässige Deutschordenshaus wird auf die Mainau verlegt. Die Burganlage wird ausgebaut. Dank eines fortschrittlichen Beamtenwesens und mit zunehmender Macht der Komture nimmt auch der Einfluß des Ordens insgesamt zu, was auch für die Mainau-Komture gilt.
1647 Im 30jährigen Krieg gelangt die Mainau nach einer verheerenden Niederlage gegen die Schweden für einige Monate deren Besitz. Unter Mitnahme alles Wertvollen - nur das sog. Schwedenkreuz bleibt zurück - ziehen die Schweden 1649 von der Insel wieder ab .
1732 Nach langsamer Erholung vom Kriegsgeschehen beginnt der Ordensbaumeister Johann Caspar Bagnato mit dem Bau der neuen Schloßkirche. Sie wird 1739 geweiht.
1739 Baubeginn des neuen Schlosses - mit der Durchführung wird wiederum Bagnato beauftragt. Nach 7jähriger Bauzeit wird das Deutschordensschloß 1746 vollendet.
1806 Die Deutschordenskommende wird aufgelöst und fällt mit allen Besitztümern an das neu gegründete Großherzogtum Baden.
1827 Fürst Nikolaus von Esterházy kauft die Insel, nachdem sie zuvor öfter den Besitzer gewechselt hatte. Er siedelt hier bereits zahlreiche seltene Pflanzen an.
1853 Der spätere Großherzog Friedrich I. erwirbt die Mainau, die er ordnet und ausbaut mit den Schwerpunkten Arboretum, Italienischer Rosengarten und Orangerie. Von seinen Reisen bringt der Großherzog viele wertvolle Bäume und Exoten mit und schafft somit eine neue Parklandschaft, die Basis für den heutigen Park.
1856 Heirat des Großherzogs mit Prinzessin Luise, Tochter des späteren Kaisers Wilhelm I. von Preußen. Sie sind die Urgroßeltern des heutigen Inselbesitzers Graf Lennart Bernadotte.
1907 Tod des Großherzogs. Die Mainau fällt an dessen Sohn, Großherzog Friedrich II., der sie seiner Schwester Viktoria, Königin von Schweden, vermacht.
1909 Geburt von Prinz Lennart Nicolaus Paul, Erbfürst von Schweden, Herzog von Smarland, Sohn des Prinzen Wilhelm von Schweden und der russischen Großfürstin Maria Pawlowna.
1930 Tod von Königin Viktoria. Die Mainau fällt bestimmungsgemäß an ihren Sohn Prinz Wilhelm von Schweden.
1932 Prinz Wilhelm überträgt die Verwaltung der Mainau seinem 23jährigen Sohn, Prinz Lennart. Als dieser wegen seiner Heirat mit einer Bürgerlichen auf sämtliche Titel und eine mögliche Thronfolge verzichtet, macht er im gleichen Jahr die Mainau zu seinem neuen Zuhause. Von nun an widmet er sich konsequent ihrer Neugestaltung, öffnet sie dem Publikum und nimmt ständig Verbesserungen und Modernisierungen vor. Heute ist die Mainau das größte touristische Unternehmen am internationalen Bodensee.
1961 Verabschiedung der sog. Grünen Charta, in der die Mainau sich bereits deutlich zu einer umweltbezogenen Arbeit bekennt.
1974 Gräfin Sonja Bernadotte und Graf Lennart Bernadotte haben die gesamte Mainau in eine Stiftung eingebracht. Ziele der Stiftung sind u.a. Förderung der Wissenschaften, der Landespflege, des Umwelt- und Denkmalschutzes und der Heimatpflege.
1982 Gräfin Sonja Bernadotte wird zur Mitgeschäftsführerin des Unternehmens ernannt.
1991 Umbennung des Unternehmens in Blumeninsel Mainau GmbH.
1998 Die Mainau erhält das Öko-Audit-Zertifikat als erster botanischer Garten Europas. Damit unterzieht sie sich freiwillig nach erfolgreich absolvierter Prüfung entsprechend den Umweltrichtlinien der EG-Verordnung Nr. 1836/93. Mit Blick auf die internationale Bodenseeregion wird im September des gleichen Jahres der Verein Europäisches Kulturforum Mainau mit dem Ziel gegründet, mittels neuer Aktivitäten und auch als Impulsgeber Menschen auf kultureller Ebene zusammenzuführen. Das gilt für Intiativen auf den Gebieten Musik, Film, darstellende und bildende Kunst in enger Zusammenarbeit mit europäischen Regionen gleichen Ranges.
2001 Gräfin Sonja Bernadotte ist alleinige Geschäftsführerin der Mainau GmbH
Seit dem 1. Januar 2002 ist Gräfin Bettina Bernadotte die Persönliche Assistentin von Gräfin Sonja Bernadotte.

The Chronicle:
First traces of settlement on the Isle of Mainau go back to 3000 BC. Since then an eventful history which focussed on the Teutonic Order and the Thirty Years´ War followed. First cultivation of rare plants by Fürst Nikolaus Esterházy, followed by the Grossherzog Friedrich I, also a lover of plants. Then various owners from different royal and ducal dynasties. Until in 1932: Prince Lennart Bernadotte took over the administration of the Mainau and found himself a new home there. The reshaping of the Isle of Mainau begins.

Around 3000 BC The settlement consisting of six houses, which was discovered at the southern shores of the Mainau during the thirties of the last century, belong to this time of early settlement in the region of Lake Constance.
15 BC The land inhabited by the Rhaetian people around Lake Constance becomes Roman, including the Mainau island. At that time there was a fortress as well as a shipyard and a fleet base of the Roman General Tiberius.
5./6. century AD The strategically important Isle of Mainau becomes an Alemannic dukedom and later a part of a Frankish royal property, administered from Bodman.
724 The Mainau is given to the powerful monastery of the Reichenau as a present, together with other strips of land of the Bodanrück.
1271 In a high-handed act, Arnold von Langenstein, resident of the Reichenau, gives away the Mainau to the Teutonic Order.
1272 The House of the Teutonic Order, originally located in Sandegg (Thurgau/Switzerland) is transferred to the Mainau. The castle is extended. On account of a progressive bureaucracy and with the growing power of the commanders, the influence of the order as a whole increases which also goes for the commanders of the Mainau.
1647 After a disasterous defeat against the Swedes in the Thirty Years´ War, the Mainau becomes Swedish property for several months. Taking with them everything of value - only the so-called Schwedenkreuz (Swedish Cross) is left behind - the Swedes withdraw from the island in 1649.
1732 Having slowly recovered from the war experience, the architect of the order, Johann Caspar Bagnato, starts to construct the new castle church. It is consecrated in the year 1739.
1739 Start of construction of the new castle - again Bagnato is in charge of the realisation. After 7 years of development, the Castle of the Teutonic Order is completed in 1746.
1806 The commendam of the Teutonic Order is dissolved and goes to the newly founded Grand Duchy Baden, along with all its possessions.
1827 Prince Nikolaus von Esterházy purchases the island, after it had changed hands several times. He was the first to cultivate numerous rare plants here.
1853 The later Grand Duke Friedrich I acquires the Mainau, he starts to improve and sort things out, giving a special attention to the arboretum, the Italian rose garden and the orangery. Travelling a lot, he never fails to bring back many valuable trees and exotic plants, thus creating a new park scenery, the basis of the park as it is today.
1856 Marriage of the Grand Duke with Princess Luise, daughter of the later Emperor Wilhelm I of Prussia. They are the grandparents of the present owner of the island, Count Lennart Bernadotte.
1907 Death of the Grand Duke. The Mainau falls to his son, Grand Duke Friedrich II, who leaves it to his sister Viktoria, Queen of Sweden.
1909 Birth of Prince Lennart Nicolaus Paul, Heir Prince of Sweden, Duke of Smarland, son of Prince Wilhelm of Sweden and the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pawlowna.
1930 Death of Queen Viktoria. As directed, the Mainau goes to her son Prince Wilhelm of Sweden.
1932 Prince Wilhelm hands over the administration of the Mainau to his 23-year-old son, Prince Lennart. In the same year, Prince Lennart makes the Mainau his new home, having renounced all titles and a possible succession to the throne because of his marriage with a commoner. Since then, he has been dedicated to reshaping and reorganising the Mainau, opening it to the public and consistently improving and modernising the island. Today the Mainau is the biggest touristic attraction of the international Lake Constance.
1961 Passing of the so-called Green Charter, where the Mainau already stands out as an environmentally conscious island.
1974 Countess Sonja Bernadotte and Count Lennart Bernadotte have brought the whole Mainau into a foundation. Aims of this foundation are, among others: promoting the sciences, protection of historic buildings and monuments, environmental care and fostering of regional values and traditions.
1982 Countess Sonja Bernadotte is appointed co-manager of the enterprise.
1991 Renaming of the enterprise to "Flower Island Mainau GmbH".
1998 The Mainau receives the eco audit certificate as the first botanic garden in Europe. Having successfully passed an examination, the Mainau voluntarily submits to the environmental regulations according to the EC decree no. 1836/93. With regard to the international region of Lake Constance, the "Verein Europäisches Kulturforum Mainau" is founded in September of the same year, aiming at giving a fresh impulse and introducing new activities to bring together people on a cultural level. That goes for all sorts of initiatives in the fields of music, film, fine arts and plastic arts, in close cooperation with European regions of the same status.
2001 Countess Sonja Bernadotte is the exclusive manageress of the Mainau GmbH.
Since January 1st, 2002, Comtesse Bettina Bernadotte is the personal assistant of Countess Sonja Bernadotte.
