My Action Figure collection

For many years I was a collector of action figures. I remember very well playing with my GI Joe, DC and Star Wars figures when I was young. Even after I stopped playing with them, I still collected them, and, since I don't see them very often- some I have not seen in over two decades, and I'm not even sure I'll be able to find to photograph- I do want to document them so I can look at them any time on my Fotki.
Also, I have absolutely no clue how many figures I have for each line...and I would like to know. Instead of actually having to count them, I can eliminate the chance for human error by just seeing how many photos are in each album. I love it when I can get the computer to do my thinking for me.

Crash Dummies

I loved these figures....I normally was very good with my toys...which I think shows in that most of them are still in pretty darn good shape despite the fact that most of them, GI Joes especially, got hours of play time when I was a kid. Crash Dummies, on the other hand...crashed. A lot. I used to put them in the cars and race the cars...down the stairs. Parts literally flying in every direction. Of both cars and figures. I don't know where most of them are anymore, but I have the distinct impression that if I can find them, a trip down the stairs may be in order again...but this time, photo documented! (evil laugh)

DC Cartoons & Strangely colored Batmans (Batmen?)

Starting around 1992, and lasting through 2000 or so, DC had several animated series with highly stylized artwork. I didn't care much for the artwork, and didn't get a lot of the figures. Started with Batman, then a Superman series, followed by a Justice League series. The stories were pretty good- but the art left a lot to be desired, in my opinion.

For some unknown reason, DC also had a Swamp Thing cartoon at one point. I don't remember it, but I do have some of the figures.

Since this album would be pretty sparce otherwise, I have decided to put all the many made-up-to-make-a-new-figure Batmans in here too. They issued hundreds, if not thousands of Batman figures, in costumes that didn't come from any comic, cartoon or movie- were simply created to make a new figure. We got some of them- the completist gene is strong in my family- but eventually we had enough, and quit. I doubt I'll be able to find all the ones we did get, I have not seen them in probably more than 15 years.

DC Direct

DC Direct was a large scale line that began around 1999, and while they originally started by producing "difinitive" versions of the characters, they devolved into stylized and "artist of the month" issues of Superman and Batman mostly. We began getting everything, but eventually we quit the stylized figures, and finally, stopped totally.

DC Infinite Heroes

This line was the most reminiscent of the Super Powers line, but it was hurt by a couple of things- poorly done figures on occasion, and a real bad distribution system. We never were able to find some of them. This was the last line we actively collected, and if they had kept it up, we would be still.

DC Micro Figures

DC has had a variety of lines with micro figures. These are characterized by being small enough that you could display them on a coin. I know they did hundreds of figures in the HeroClix line although I have only a few.

DC Movies

Honestly, I don't really care for DC's movies, with the exception of the 1966 Batman movie, which predates the Action Figure concept anyway. I don't even plan to watch some of them, ever. Most of them get figures, but I didn't get most of them- most of the figures for DC's movies I have are from the 90s Batman movies.

DC Other

Other DC lines, including the laugable Toy Biz line, the Kenner line from the 1990s, the comic-accurate Batman line(s), Total Justice, and whatever else I can't even remember right now.

DC Super Powers

Produced from 1985-86, this remains in my opinion the best DC toyline ever!
It took me more then 20 years but I have finally completed the collection. Pictures of the vehicles will come later, they are a bit hard to get to.
My earliest memories of action figures are these...although now, more than 25 years later, the memories are not really much, or very specific...I just remember having them.

G.I. Joe

The original GI Joe line is, in my opinion, the best action figure line ever. It had it all, really, and I was introduced to it in 1990. I would stay with it until the end (1994) and then both relaunches, 1997 and 2000, before finally bailing in 2004ish. This album is for original style figures only.

GI Joe is what was my #1 favorite thing before I discovered NASCAR.

G.I. Joe 2nd Style

After the GI Joe line's second relaunch, they decided to do the figures in a different style...the figures are of general poor quality, most of them suffering from some serious proportion issues. I started out getting them, but I really didn't like most of them...although as time went on, they did get a little better in some cases.

I bailed on the line when it got to the point that I was resenting the money I was spending on them more than I enjoyed having them- my desire to have a complete collection wasn't without limits.

A huge thank you to the folks at http://www.yojoe.com who, without their database, I would not have been able to identify most of these figures- I've blocked most of them from memory, and the order they went in, also could not have been figured out with the database. (I also used the database to ID some of the original style figures I couldn't remember, and what order some of them went in, as well) The version numbering is continual between both styles of figures. They kept reissuing the classic figures after they started the new line, but I am breaking them up here by personal preference.

GI Joe Knockoffs and Foreign

With the massive amounts of success Hasbro had with the GI Joe line, it is only natural that there would be other, no-name companies riding their coat tales. I didn't get many of the knockoffs, but I did get a few.

Hasbro also sent their tooling to other countries, who used them to create their own issues, usually with different paint designs. While there were quite a few, I only have examples from Funskool, which was from India. They were somewhat hard to find, (online only) and last I knew, were no longer available in the USA due to lead paint issues, but that is going on a decade ago now so I could be remembering wrong, or even just a rumor- I simply don't know (remember)

I don't have a lot of either, so I am mixing them into this one album, but they will be labeled to the best of my memory.

GI Joe vehicles and bases

One of the best things about the GI Joe line is that it was truly immersive- vehicles played a large part in the line, and covered everything from tanks, to planes, to submarines to even a 7-foot long aircraft carrier, and a space shuttle! (and everything in between). Early vehicles were based on real military vehicles, whereas later ones were purely Hasbro creations. The bases, while only a handfull of them were issued (and I don't have them all) were incredible. When I was young much of my GI Joe playing was vehicle based. Most of mine are packed away and very hard to get to, so this album won't be complete for years.

I am missing more vehicles than I am figures- I've almost completed those, either first hand or purchased later. Vehicles were another story, they tend to be more expensive and harder to store. I always wanted the Space Shuttle they did in the late 80s but I never got it...when I was actively trying to complete the line in the late 90s and early 2000s, it was always more than I could afford.

Marvel

Although I just can't get into Marvel's comics, I did enjoy the cartoons and most of their movies...and the trading cards back in the day. Naturally, action figures were sure to follow.

NASCAR figures

There have not been many NASCAR figures...and most of them have been pretty lousy in quality.
Racing Champions issued the first, in 1991. They were blatant ripoffs of GI Joe figures. Starting Lineup did some in 1997 and possibly 1998, but they rarely ever looked like who they were supposed to look like.
Winner's Circle also did a couple...I only have one. It barely counts as an "action" figure as it's more closely a small statue...but you can move the arms and head.

NBA Basketball figures

From 1996-2006 I collected NBA basketball cards big time- although not as much in those later years. I left the sport for a while but watch it again now. When Starting Lineup was around, they did figures of NBA players for years. The early ones were quite rare last I knew. (but that was in the mid 2000s). I naturally got as many of them as I could get my hands on.
Other figure brands will be in here eventually as well. I know after they took the license away from Kenner (makers of Starting Lineups) they went to Mattel, but the figures were of lesser quality, and after that McFarlane got the license, and the quality got even worse as the scale increased....I only have a handfull of non-Starting Lineup figures, but they will all be in here...eventually.

After I got my collection out for the first time in a long time, I found a website that listed what was issued in each year. I may have gotten some of the wrong, especially for the players who had a lot of issues. For the Legends issues, mostly issued in 1996 for the NBA's 50th Anniversary, the dates range from the time that player was on that team.

Other figures

Figures in my collection from lines that don't have enough to get an album. Some, I believe, only had one issue (like the Starting Lineup John Force/Drag Racing line) while some I only got one or two figures from a larger line.

Power Rangers

For a brief period of time- roughly when I was 9-11 years old (1993-95) I was into the Power Rangers...for some reason. It didn't last long, but it did last long enough to get some of the figures, and some of the trading cards. I don't remember any of the villian's names, so if I can find the figures, if I can't get it off the cards I do have, they will likely be labeled as "unknown".

My all-time favorite TV Show, I've seen every episode multiple times and the Simpsons toyline is one of only two I've ever completed.

Star Wars 1st Series

This was the line that started it all...in 1977, Star Wars became the biggest movie franchise ever (at least in my opinion, the best!), and Kenner took a chance and released the first ever action figure line. The line would run from 1977-1985, and my brother got them new. Unlike so many other people, luckily, we kept ours, although they do have decades of paint wear.

Most of the figures are technically his, not mine, although a few are- at the end of the line's run in '85, the figures were very hard to find, and he was unable to locate them all. Nowadays with card/comic shows (Which I miss!), vintage toy sellers, and the internet we've tracked down most of them.

Star Wars 2nd Series

The second Star Wars series launched in 1995- one of my best mid-90s memories is of finding them for the first time at the local Service Merchandise. The line has gone through some major changes, and it's still going strong, although we no longer collect it- lack of funds and storage space strikes again.

My love for Star Wars is pretty much limitless, I watch the movies all the time- probably into the 4 digits in viewing totals for the first movies- and my earliest memory, of anything, is watching Return of the Jedi.

Star Wars Micro Machines

While Micro Machines primarily did cars, and other Earth bound vehicles, they also did some licensed lines, including Star Wars. I don't know if we were able to get all of them, but we tried. (or more accurately, if I can find all of them).

I am aware that some of the images are a little bit blurry...but it's very hard to clearly photograph something small enough that you can fit more than one on a dime. (Or, for the vehicles, a quarter). Close enough!
