1991 #42 Kyle Petty Mello Yello Pontiac Grand Prix
COMPLETE!! This was my first attempt at masking a two tone paint job. It worked, but not overly well! I was always a fan of this car, and that's why I chose to build it, even though I had never attempted a multi-color scheme with spraypainting before! This scheme ran basically unchanged between 1991 (the first year, this car represents that) and 1994, when it was replaced by Coors Light in 1995. I have been told, although I do not know if this is true or not, that Mello Yello executives liked the way their car looked in the movie Days of Thunder and the decided to keep it on the track! I later discovered that this car, in it's 1993 livery, was on the pole for the very first race I ever saw! Kind of interesting that the very first car I more then likely saw in 1:1 was the first car I masked and painted two different colors. It didn't turn out like I had hoped, but for a first try it turned out pretty good. Also of note is that it was molded in black, and the interior and green were painted right over the bare plastic. The green took two coats, though. Both were Tamiya paints.
