B-17 Bomber Sentimental Journey and "Nazi" plane, 2000
Just a fair warning...There are a few swastikas in the album. I don't support or condone what the Nazi's did, but I also don't support changing history, even the lousy stuff.
Back in 2000, these two WWII planes were at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Glens Falls, NY. I was able to go and see them.
I have been told by my friends who know about this kind of stuff that the "Nazi" plane is actually a Casa-111, built by the Spanish under license after WWII, but of the same design as the German Heinkel-111 that was used during the War. Since that is a more historically important plane, it was restored to those markings....and it's the only one left flying in the world. (sure wish I had taken more photos, of both of them!)
The B-17, named Sentimental Journey, is considered to be the best B-17 left flying and is quite famous in it's own right, appearing in films and documentarys.
I am afraid of heights so I did not go on one of the tours offered on Sentimental Journey, but I did watch it take off, and that is captured in the photos, as well as it flying off in the distance. One of the photos it's so far away it is very hard to spot...but it is there.
