Scale Model Boxart

By model company. This resurrects an old idea. Luckily, I didn't delete the albums when I moved the folder into my Private home, they all were last updated in 2005, and most of my kits were purchased before then, so I didn't have much work to do the update them, and was able to accomplish it all on 12/10/11.

Box Art by subject
Another concept I worked on when I first created my Fotki. I let it go around 2005, and resurrected it in May 2012. I was able to save the albums that I created originally by putting them in my "private home" instead of deleting them.

Academy

South Korean company Academy is new to me, as I've not seen any automotive kits from them. Once I expanded my modeling horizons, many new companies are becoming known to me. Academy's kits are for the most part well done. They are a staple at the local hobby shop(s) and thus have begun to appear in my collection.

Airfix

British company Airfix has been around a very long time- Wikipedia says 1950. They don't produce a lot of automotive kits so I wasn't familiar with them until I started building other kinds of models- but I like what I've seen so far!

Aurora

I began to learn about the history of scale models in the year 2000, and one name stood out among all the others that no longer exist- Aurora. Aurora kits hold a legendary status in the hobby, and are not easy to come by. In going to all the shows I've gone to, more even than I've documented (Before I had Fotki/digital camera, I didn't take pictures!), the times I've seen Aurora kits in person could be counted on one hand. I'd always wanted one, but the few times I saw them, at car shows, they were either in poor condition, or well out of my price range, or both. On May 20th, 2012, I finally got one- at my local Hobby Shop no less! Several years ago they brought in a collection of old airplane kits, and I've looked at them many times, but always missed this one. Not this time.

Dragon

Chinese company Dragon, or DML, did not leave me very happy with my first experience with their kits. I recieved the Nashorn as part of the HVHMG Christmas Exchange, and I found the kit to be fiddly, overly complicated, and had a high parts count just for the sake of high parts count. I've heard they had that reputation, but I didn't know it...Even so, they do make an interesting array of kits, and I will build more in the future.

Galaxie Limited

Galaxie was founded by Gary Schmidt, who also founded Scale Auto Enthusiast in 1979. They were only able to issue a few kits before funding ran out for cutting new tools, but they kits they did do are spectactular-some of the best automotive kits in history. I consider the Sedan Delivery I built to be the best model I've ever built, and I'm pushing 300 completions. My SD was also used in a half page ad for Galaxie in an issue of Model Cars Magazine.

Italeri

Italian kit producer. This album originally contained all imported kits before I broke them out into their own albums on May 21st, 2012. Italeri got to keep the original album for the sole reason that one of their kits happened to be 1st in the album.

Jordan Products

Jordan's kit offerings are entirely 1/87 scale. They are actually intended for train layouts but build up into fine little models in and of themselves. Not that I've finished any of mine- but I've seen them posted elsewhere.

Maisto

Maisto's kit offerings were solely unassbled diecast. I have a few more I don't think I photographed- I believe they were all built before I even had a digital camera.

Maisto, also, sizes them to fit the box. Something serious model manufacturers found out doesn't cut it in the 1970s, Maisto still does to this day.

Minicraft

I'm not a big fan of Minicraft's automotive kits, but I took a chance on their 1/144th P51 Mustang, for the main reason it was cheap- on sale for $3.99 at a hobby shop I frequent some times of the year. It was great.

Moebius

Moebius is the latest addition to the scale model hobby, and they are issuing some very well made and very long wanted kits. They are also reissuing- in a sence- long lost Aurora tools by actually cutting new tooling based on them. And, even better, they are producing vintage NASCAR kits!

Palmer

Regularly criticized as being the worst kit manufacturer ever...I have to say, it's true. Palmer kits rarely look like what the are supposed to look like...for the most part. Their PSM line...which was a direct knockoff of MPC's boxart style of the time...build up decently, if not to the levels expected by other brands. You can see the 1970 Corvette, painted neon yellowish, in my All My Models album. The Spotlight Hobbies board dedicates April 1st to the posting of Palmers, although not many are posted...few people even bother to build them.

Polar Lights

Founded by Tom Lowe, who also resurrected Johnny Lightning in 1994, and currently runs AMT/MPC/PL, it didn't have a long run as a kit producer the first time around. They did do a series of vintage NASCAR kits which are getting very hard to find and expensive when you do. They are due for a reissue, in case anyone from AMT/MPC/PL is reading...

Pyro

Pyro is held in little better regard than Palmer, which is a shame as the three Pyro kits I have are of great quality- even up to today's standards. They are all 1/32 however, and the more popular 1/24-25th scale kits they did might have been bad...I've never seen any in person.

Revell of Germany

RoG has been related to Revell of America on and off throughout it's history. I read in a magazine that it was formed in 1956, roughly a decade after Revell of America. They issue more kits than the parent company does, and they (naturally) have a more European slant to kit subjects. Some of their kits are also issued in Revell of America boxes, and some Revell of America kits are issued in RoG boxes as well. I don't know if I have any of either, but I've read about them.

Sunny

I am not exactly sure that the brand name here is Sunny...it may be a kit description, too.

Small scale kits (which I prefer) of moderate detail. Anybody know the scale on them? Some of my club members have come to the concensus that the Concorde is 1/200th. I need to know so I can find (or get made) some decals as what the kit provides is incomplete and not really useable.

Testors

Testors has not really issued that many kits over the years, and most of them that they have issued have actually been kits licensed out by other companies, although they do have some that are wholly their own. Testors also has had a line of diecast kits, which may still be going on, in fact. Despite the fact that I love 1/64 diecast, I was not a fan of the diecast kits, after all, the main reason to build models (besides documenting history) is to paint something in the color you want it to be, and the diecast kits were all prepainted.

Trumpeter

Chinese company Trumpeter has taken a lot of negative press in the model car hobby...most of it, I feel, undeserved, although their early issues did have some problems. One of the biggest problems Trumpeter faces is that they have by far the most expensive kits, and when you drop $40 on a kit, you expect it to be perfect...their first American issue, the 60 Bonneville..was not. Every Trumpter release afterwords has taken harsh criticism for "issues" that I can't even find with photos of the real cars with the so-called issues circled.

UPC kits

I know practically nothing about these kits...if anyone can tell me the scales of the kits, and also what year they were issued, I would appreciate it.

They look pretty old...the seller thought they were from the 60s but he wasn't really sure about it, just a hunch.

The small blue box models could be displayed on a quarter!
