NASCAR

NASCAR is the most important thing in my life...my life revolves around it.

Decided to break out the NASCAR cards into yearly albums on 3/27/12. With over 250 pages in the main album, it was very difficult to find anything I was looking for. Also, it would be interesting to know how many cards I have from each season.

1971

The very first year of NASCAR cards, with the STP promotional issue being the only release. Normally rare and expensive, I never thought I would be able to get any for my collection, but then the Elmo Langley card popped up on Ebay at $20 and I added the rarest NASCAR set to my collection!

1988 Maxx

The first year of NASCAR cards...or at least, mainstream, pack/box based NASCAR cards.
Maxx was the first company, and while they went out of buisness in 1996, are in my opinion still the best NASCAR card company.

Another year where Maxx was the only set. The 1989 set is the hardest Maxx set to find...I didn't get any of them until 2010!

1990 Maxx

1990 is the first year I have a complete set from- although I "cheated" by buying a factory set. Without that my 1990 Maxx collection would be a total of 3 packs worth of cards!

1991

91 was when NASCAR really started to hit the big time- Maxx was suddenly not the only company to produce cards. It's also the year that Racing Champions really started producing a lot of cars. A good year overall!

K&M, Pro Set and Traks all made their debuts, and ARCA got it's first card set. While ARCA is NOT a part of NASCAR, I'm including them anyway.

The 1991 Maxx set is in my opinion the greatest NASCAR card set ever. I have every card available, including promotional issues, as far as I know.

1991 Pro Set was the first set to ever include an autograph in the packs. I was lucky enough to pull one, surprisingly in silver ink. (Beckett lists them as black)

1991 Pro Set

The First Pro Set set, also one of the first to include an autograph, which I was lucky enough to pull from my box...

Includes the 50 card Petty Family set, which technically was it's own issue.

1991 Traks

Issued in two versions, regular, and glossy, which was exclusive to the factory set. (which I have). They scan the same and where I have both only one is scanned.

Noted for being the first NASCAR card of Jeff Gordon, who, to date, has more cards produced than any others.

1992

1992 was the year I discovered NASCAR, at Christmas time, but I didn't discover they made NASCAR cards until 1993.

1992 Maxx was the first set I ever completed, having purchased a Factory Set sometime in summer 1993.

92 saw the debut of Wheels and Action Packed, and the single set from Redline Racing.

1993

1993 was the first year that I actually watched the races, having discovered the sport with a big box of diecast at Christmas 1992. I also discovered that there were NASCAR cards available sometime early in 1993, although I don't know what was my first card...I didn't start keeping track of when I got the cards until 1998, and I didn't always remember to keep track of it as late as 2007. I wish now that I had, but it's lost to history.

93 saw the premier of Press Pass- never a company I was particularly fond of, they would turn out to be "The last man standing", being the only company to make NASCAR cards from 2001-current. Maxx also launched the Premier Plus line, a favorite of mine, made up entirely of chromium cards. Wheels and Action Packed, which issued promos only in 1992, both issued their first full sets in 1993. Action Packed was unique in that every card was embossed- does make them hard to stack, though! Pro Set changed it's name to Finish Line.

1994

Although I began collecting NASCAR cards in 1993, I liked the 1994 set designs a whole lot better and collected a lot more of them when new. The first box I ever opened of any trading card set was a retail box of Action Packed Series II purchased at the local Kmart.

Finish Line Gold, Hi-Tech Brickyard 400, Maxx Medallion, Maxx Premier Series, Optima and Power were the new sets on the year. Press Pass launched it's first premium product, VIP, which would have the second longest run of any card set, issued until 2009. (Only the flagship Press Pass has a longer run, since 1993) Skybox also issued it's only NASCAR set in 1994, although they produced the cards issued with Action diecasts in 1995 as well.

1995

After the excellent set designs of 1994, I found most of 1995's sets lacking- I got less of them new than I did in 1994. More sets than ever before were issued in 1995, some of them I thought were excellent, but didn't return, like Maxx Crown Chrome and Images.
Maxx Crown Chrome is one of the biggest blunders in card history, though- Maxx forgot to number them! Luckily, the cards were essentially paralells of the Premier Plus set, with the same numbers.

Fleer, Classic, Pinnacle and Upper Deck both made their NASCAR debuts. I've never been a big fan of UD, but when they get it right, they really get it right- 3 of their sets are among my top 10 all time favorites. Pinnacle was an interesting company, they ushered in a lot of innovations. Fleer was my favorite basketball card company, but their NASCAR efforts were limited and not all that great. (They actually came out before I got into NBA though). Classic actually got the NASCAR license, which is surprising- normally they produced unlicensed cards.

With the exception of Select, which I loved when new and got most of then, and Maxx Medallion, which I bought a box of in the 2000s, roughly 95% of the other cards in this album all came from a full 5000 count box I purchased around 2000.

1996

1996...Maxx went out of buisness in mid-96, quickly purchased by Upper Deck, who basically always got it wrong from then on. UD's Road to the Cup was a fun set, though. LOTS of new sets in 1996. The 1994-97 time period had a lot of different sets, some of which I have not even been able to hunt down a card from yet, even.

In 1996, Press Pass became the first company...ever, in any sport...to put an actual relic in/on cards, when they issued the Burnin' Rubber series, made of portions of actual race tire. The insert is still produced today (as far as I know)

I distinctly remember ordering a box of UD Road to the Cup from QVC's For Race Fans Only. I also ordered a box of 1995 UD Series II, the first two NASCAR hobby boxes I ever did.

1997

I don't really remember 1997 all that much- sick for most of 96-97. Maxx Year in Review is the highlight of 1997's cards- and the only time Upper Deck got something truly right- this is a concept that should be done every year.

1998

1998 was the year I went from being a casual fan to where NASCAR was the most important thing in my life. 1998's card highlight is Maxx 10th Anniversary- current photos on vintage card designs has always been cool to me, and that's what that whole series was. It was the first set I ever created a listing for.

Unfortunatly, it's also when the NASCAR card hobby started to decline. Upper Deck had the most different releases, followed by Press Pass, and that was pretty much it. Pinnacle released their final set early in the year and then they were gone.

1999

The 1990s are my all time favorite era in NASCAR history- and that all came to an end in 1999 (naturally!) but the racing also changed after 1999, for some unknown reason. I don't really remember 1999 all that well, unfortunatly- I believe that I watched every race, I just can't remember most of them. About the only one I remember well is the Bristol night race...

I didn't get many cards new in 1999. Most of them were added to my collection later, a large portion in a full 5000 count box I bought circa 2000. I did buy one pack of Press Pass...and pulled my first race used and serially numbered NASCAR card. It was the Bill Elliott Skidmarks paralell- where they put race used rubber shavings onto the card- and it was serially numbered 001/150 as well!

2000

2000 was the end of the road for Upper Deck, which meant the end of the name of Maxx. Even if UD did get it wrong most of the time, it still stinks that Maxx ended...and that Press Pass was the only one left. I didn't get many cards in 2000. Most of them were purchased after the fact, in the mid-2000s.

2001

I got even less cards in 2001 new. I think only a couple of packs' worth.

I really couldn't stand Press Pass at the time, and they were the only company to have the NASCAR license from 2001-current. However, when I got some of the cards later, I viewed them with less disdain than I once did. It was really two things- Press Pass only produced small sets, generally ignoring shots of the cars, and the crew chiefs and owners. That was, and to this day, remains my biggest problem with Press Pass. The other part was, the designs Press Pass was cranking out were not that great- even compared to card sets they themselves had issued just a few short years before.

2003

2003 was when it all changed for me for NASCAR cards. Even though I've been a diehard NASCAR fan since Christmas 1992, I really didn't do much with my NASCAR cards- until 2003. I was in the Target in Kingston and purchased a single pack- I don't even remember what set it was from. In that single pack, was a Press Pass Signings card...of Dale Earnhardt Jr! That rekindled my love of NASCAR cards, mostly dormant since 1998. I started getting back into it big time, and for Christmas that year I got a box of Wheels High Gear. I would continue to get at least one box of most set from late 2003 until 2006, and in that time period is also when I got older boxes as I could find them...when most of my 2000-2002 cards were added to my collection.

2004

2004 was my first year where I really collected NASCAR cards the way I always should have- I believe it's also the only year where I did a box of every set released. A great year for my collection!

2005

2005 was another good year for me for cards, although I never did get a box of everything. I know I missed American Thunder, and possibly others, too. I can't remember anymore...luckily, it's all written down, so I don't have to!

The big news in 2005 was the debut of Legends. While Press Pass has NEVER once gotten it right, it has been, for many years, the only way to get cards of a select group of retired/deceased drivers, which is something that had been sorely lacking in the hobby for years.

2006

It was in late 2006 when I came to the conclusion that I couldn't afford to buy boxes anymore, and continue to collect diecast. Since my diecast collection always comes first, the cards got cut out- almost totally sometimes. When I've been able to save a few dollars here and there, I have gotten a couple of boxes since then, but only a grand total of five- not like it once was, and what I wish it could still be.

2007

I got hardly any cards at all in 2007. A couple of packs from my local Target was it. My brother gave me a box of 2007 Press Pass for Christmas that year. I have gotten a few more after the fact, mostly through my friends on NUTS, but I still don't have more than I do.

2009

In 2009 I was able to actually get a couple of boxes again- it was a good year for my collection, even if not as good as it had been earlier in the decade.

It was during 2009 when I decided to scan my entire collection, although I didn't finish in 2009.

2010

In 2010, I sourced most of my cards from Target...but I did save up and get a real box of Legends...what a rip off. A third of the set is not even NASCAR, and while I could deal with it if it was legends of other forms of auto racing...it is mostly modern drivers! I decided then and there that I would never waste money on a hobby box of Legends ever again. In fact I even had to walk away from the hobby for a few months just because of how angry I was at Press Pass. I STILL have not gone back to the NASCAR card forum, although I will soon.

2011

Not a good year for me. Partially because I couldn't afford to buy more, partially because even if I could we didn't have a working car to go to the stores to and get them, and partially because I was still majorly ticked off at Press Pass from the shamefull 2010 Legends.

I did get a box of Wheels Main Event for Christmas, which was the highlight of the year.

Dec 21, 2012

Well, as usual Press Pass issues the first set of the year- and getting to be one of the ONLY sets of the year- before the engines cool from the previous season. As usual, they get it wrong. I would be honestly surprised if Press Pass survives another 10 years. When is NASCAR going to wake up and give the card license to a company that would actually do a good job?

The news broke on the morning of the Daytona 500, when Chris Buescher posted a photo of the autographs he was signing on Twitter. Panini had acquired the NASCAR license! After some delay, the first set of the Panini era, Prizm, came out on August 4th, and I actually did a box of the set.

All cards are my own creations, and each is the only one in existance. Not for trade or sale under any circumstances!

My Own Creations

Don't laugh....but, back in the mid 1990s, I decided to make my own cards using posterboard and markers. I made quite a few of them, but I didn't concern myself with such things as proper spelling, staying in the lines or anything near even cuts along the edges.

I even made at least one paralell!

The time was mostly 1995, but some were, I think, 1994 as well.

Each card was a one off. I did number them but I put two different numbers on most of them, and I don't remember which one was the card number and which one was something else. I also didn't number them in order of making them, they were just numbered randomly, like you get when you open a pack.

The only criteria for getting a card appears to have been, there must have been a 1/64 car of theirs in my collection.

I was about 10 or 11 when I made these, depending on the time of the year (I have no idea when)

NASCAR Cards Others

Restructured in 3/12 to be others and errors- others being sets that don't have specific years, mostly. Leaving the original caption though.

I have been collecting NASCAR cards on and off since 1993, unfortunatly more off then on. I decided in April 2009 that I would scan my ENTIRE collection, and the scanning started on 4/26/09. Previously I had scanned the autographed, race used and serially numbered cards only.

This system will not be flawless- For instance 1996 Upper Deck Virtual Velocity will be after all Upper Deck Road to the Cup cards, 1996 Maxx Over the Wall will be after Maxx Made in America cards, etc. Also, to appear in number order, the cards have to have a three digit code. For instance in a set that has 120 cards, card #1 will have to be listed as card #001, card number 67 will have to be labeled #067. For sets that are 99 cards or less, only a two digit code will be needed.

For Press Pass products, I am not going to re-type Press Pass for all of them. Example: Press Pass Eclipse becomes just Eclipse, Press Pass Stealth becomes just Stealth, etc. The same holds true for Wheels. Wheels American Thunder becomes American Thunder, Wheels High Gear becomes High Gear. This is mainly done for space constrains as Fotki does not allow a very long title. For Upper Deck Road to the Cup and Upper Deck Victory Lane, they will read as UD Road to the Cup and UD Victory Lane.

Hit scan #1000 on 7/25/09, #2000 on 8/19/09, #3000 on 9/26/09, #4000 on 11/19/09, #5000 on 11/23/09, #6000 on 11/26/09, #7000 on 2/1/10, #8000 on 7/1/10, #9000 on 7/11/10, halfway AND 10,000 on 7/18/10, #11000 on 7/21/10, 12000 on 8/1/10, 13000 on 8/3/10, 14000 on 8/12/10, 15000 on 8/15/10, 16000 on 8/26/10, 17000 on 8/28/10, 18000 and 19000 on 9/2/10, reached 19,658 (The end!) on 9/3/10. There is one small box of cards that has gone missing so the collection is not yet complete, but...until I find them....this is it!
