Companies were dispatched for the bldg fire to the rear of station-68. Arriving crews found a row of 8 garages, approx 30 x 100 well involved with the fire house as an exposure. Crews lead off with a 3" blitz line and 2 ladder pipes, Ladder-68 & Tower-61. Additional handlines were also stretched, along with the deluge gun atop of 40-1. Four 5" supply lines were dropped and charged in that short span of time also. All of this and the bulk of the fire was knocked with in the 1st 20 min mark. An explosion and fire rocked a Chester Twp Home. Arriving crews had heavy fire in a 1-1/2 story SFD. The explosion ripped the house from it's foundation, and split it down the middle on the "B" side, leaving interior access impossible. Crews placed several portable deck guns and hand lines in svc from the exterior. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked, crews awaited a crane for demolition of the house to extinguish hot spots. leaving interior access impossible. 2 story 30 x 60 apartments. Heavy fire 1st floor with extension to 2nd floor and thru the roof. The wind was a big factor in this fire. Freezing temperatures and wind blown water made for lots of ice. Numerous handlines stretched plus 2 deck guns. Limited access to the bldg for apparatus also hampered operations, by limiting their options. A long narrow driveway only allowed for one truck up to the scene. All I can say is WOW. Helluva fire, Helluva job by all on scene.Glad I'm not picking up the almost 10,000' of 5" supply line laying on the ground. One lay was approx 6000' from Cheyney & Glenn Mills into the scene, another lay was at least 2500' to a pond in the rear of the property. I don't know how long the other lay was. Water problems initially due to distance, and hydrants on campus were not nearly enough to supply the massive need for this fire. 71-2 was drafting from a pond directly behind the fire bldgs. They had 5 hard sleeves connected to the front suction for the drafting operation. Who says drafting can't be done through a front suction!? I didn't get back to the other drafting operation. Numerous master streams in service, mostly aerial devices. A couple handlines in service later on in the fire from the exterior also. The wind was a big factor also. Blowing embers and master streams where ever it wanted to. I couldn't get to the "C" "D" corner until late in the fire due to the wind and water. The ground started icing up before I left. Both canteens also did a great job keeping everyone fed and hydrated. into the scene, another lay was at least 2500' to a pond in the rear of the property. I don't know how long the other lay was. 63-9 arrived o/s first reporting heavy fire from a 2 story apt bldg. The bldg was an older bldg that had been converted into apts. Numerous renovations, which means lots of false walls and cielings, leaving plenty of places for the fire to hide and travel. The closest hydrant was approx 2500' away. A 5" supply line was dropped from this hydrant with 63-2 doing the relay. Tanker 59 was called in and supplied telesqurt-52 on the "B" side of the bldg. There was an attached garage on the "C" side of the bldg which ran the length. It's believed this is where the fire started and got into the roof of the apt bldg before the F/D's arrival. At least half of the bldg was well involved in fire when the F/D arrived. A trench cut was made in the roof which did help in keeping the fire from travelling the length through the "B" end. Several antique cars were housed in the garage, which were a total loss. leaving plenty of places for the fire to hide and travel. The closest hydrant was approx 2500' away.
