The FrameShot Awards - description

I've had a lot of fun meeting and photographing people at science fiction and anime conventions. These conventions bring out the best in the wonderful weirdness of human personality. Some people and events have brought so much weirdness to the con experience that they deserve special recognition. No, there's no category for "Best Costume" or "Hottest Chic." Viewers can look through convention pics and decide stuff like that for themselves. Instead, these categories are made up for the utter nonsense that makes con life so great. The categories are named and awarded based on three categories: 1. All awards are given out in a tongue-in-cheek manner, 2. I've personally witnesed and photographed the contestants, and 3. They win because I say they win. :p

The Getting-Waaaaaaaaay-Too-Much-Into-Character Award

Winner: Sith Vixen and Vader Painter
Convention: Sci-Fi Summer 2003

This couple got into character so much while wearing their Matrix costumes at Sci-Fi Summer 2003 that they ended up running around the hotel stagging gunfights with toy guns between themselves for no apparent reason. Fortunately, they were nice enough to stop from time to time to talk and pose for pictures.

The Biting-Off-More-Than-She-Can-Chew Award

Winner: Amy Smith
Convention: Dragon Con 2001

Whether she's making people sweat on the exercise floor or belting out rock tunes, Amy can pose a challenge to even the most battle-hardened characters... usually.

The Red-Eye-Awareness Award

Winner: Apollo Smile
Conventions: Dragon Con 1997-2000 & 2002

Knowing how to model takes more than just good looks and a good outfit. Being able to avoid red-eye from camera flashes is as important as being able to strike a good pose. I've taken hundreds of pictures (concert, candid, and posed shots) of Apollo when she performed at Dragon Con, yet she had red-eye in only about six of those pics. Apollo also wins this award for posing for more pictures than any other guest at Dragon Con from 1997 through 2000.

The Most-Embarrassed-Fanboy Award

Winner: Drew Dubois
Convention: Dragon Con 1999

Despite all his shyness and anxieties, Drew was talked into serenading Apollo Smile with her own song, "Purrr"... If you've heard the song, you'll understand how big of a push it'd be to get any guy to sing it. Drew eventually made a full recovery from the experience and went on to lead a normal life.

The Geek-Minds-Think-Alike Award

Winners: Optimus Prime(s)
Convention: Dragon Con 2001

It's not unusual to see multiple cosplayers to dress up as the same character... so long as the costumes are relatively simple. It was a big suprise at Dragon Con 2001 to see that, not one, but two different cosplayers had decided to go through all the trouble to dress up as Optimus Prime.

The Never-Taking-Herself-Too-Seriously Award

Winner: Jessica Calvello
Convention: various anime cons

Some guests attend only attend cons to promote their latest work. The truely great guests are the ones who attend as much for fun as for work and have no problems interacting with the fans. It was a tough call on this category, and Jessica Calvello takes the prize (or she would if I gave out prizes.) Not only would Jessi hang out with the crowds at conventions, she'd also show outtakes from her voice acting work at room parties.

The Kicking-Myself-For-Not-Getting-A-Picture-Of-The-Moment Award

Winners: Eric and Sandra
Convention: Dragon Con 2001

Eric and Sandra entered the Dragon Con 2001 masqeraude with Sandra dressed as Catwoman. Much to her surprise, Eric secretly made arrangements to use the occasion to propose marriage to her on stage. Unfortunately, the ballroom was already filled to capacity, and I had to watch from an overflow room - making it impossible for me to photograph the actual proposal. After the masqeraude was over, Eric and Sandra arguably became the most photographed couple in Dragon Con history.

The How-Many-Times-Do-I-Have-Answer-That-Question? Award

Winners: Eric and Sandra
Convention: Dragon Con 2002

The following year, Eric and Sandra and were so inundated by people asking when the marraige would take place that Sandra looked like she was going to break down a few hours into the con.

The Natural-Born-Model Award

Winner: YaYa Han
Conventions: mulitple

I've met a lot of models at conventions. YaYa stood out when I met her because she always looked she was striking a pose no matter what she was doing - despite having no formal training (I'm taking her word about not being trained.)

The Best-Teaming-Of-An-Out-Of-State-Band-With-Local-Talent Award

Winners: The Last Dance & The Awalim Dancers
Convention: Dragon Con 2003

Proving that presentation is everything, The Last Dance spiced up their already highly charged performance by joining forces with the Awalim Dancers, a local troupe of belly dancers. The ladies proved their skill and stamina by staying in time with LTD's eclectic rock.

The How'd-You-Expect-The-Fanboys-To-React? Award

Winner: Roxana Martin
Convention: Anime Weekend Atlanta 2000
The stereotype of the average con attendee being a geek who'd never even dream of meeting an attractive woman in real life, much less be able to keep his composure around one, was taken to an extreme at AWA 2000. Roxana Martin dressed as Kusanagi from "Ghost in the Shell" - complete with a thong backside. For what seemed to be a three or four hour period, Roxy couldn't take three steps without having a flood of fanboys demand to take her picture. Each time, she'd have to pose for at least five to fifteen minutes before being allowed to move on... only to be stopped three steps later by another flood of fanboys...
