This brings back memories from way back - about 28 years ago. I planted some potatoes and was so proud when they showed their shoots. The next time I looked my husband had covered them and I was getting hysterical. I shouted at him: "What have you done? You are suffocating my potatoes!" and dug them all out again. Did we have a good crop? We had more potatoes than I planted, say it that way.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hi Christel !!! Thanks for your comments!!! yes,,, the potato crop usually yields pretty fair... Hope all is good with you!!! Wishing you All the Best!!! Gary
Right, I saw this picture in one of the e-mails, but didn't reflect it to be one out of a fotki album. It did strike a nerve though, so I went back to it now to have a closer look. It was a case of déja vu. I'd seen this before. It's a vision out of my childhood: The discarded agricultural apliance sitting there in the weeds. They would sit around in the fields where I grew up too. Mostly broken horse drawn apliances, left there to rust away while the new ones were tractor drawn or even self propelled, so noone cared to repair them. So you plant potatoes? You do it much like my neighbour used to. He didn't make much ado, when the snow was off the ground, and the frost had tawed, he'd go at the potato patch with a narow spade (about 6" wide and 10"). He'd push it down with his foot, lift out a wedge of hard soil, his son or daughter (1 and 2 years my juniors) would carry a bucket of potatoes from last year and throw in one. Then my neighbour would throw the wedge sideways into the hole so that it would crumle some, give it a pat and then to the next.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> You got it Stein!!! Potatoes are easy!!! And when you arrive in May I will show you the plants growing!!! Gary
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hi Merike!!! Well,,, if you cut the potato into smaller pieces you get more pieces to plant '-))) But each piece must have at least one eye!!! They are growing already... today I see the green tops coming up thru the soil '-))) Gary
Thanks for your visit and I hope that you are fine!!! Looks like you got the perfect screen name and the perfect photo!!! See,,, that's great!!! Cheers!!!
This looks like a lazy man's way of planting potatoes. I usually dig the ground first then dig a trench, fill the bottom with manure, put the potatoes in about 15inches apart cover with soil, then when they start growing pull the soil up so that they are covered. All hard work.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hi Irene!!! Thanks for the tip on planting potatoes!!! Are you planting any this year??? Mine are just now showing the green tops peeking thru the soil... Today I will plant some carrots, raddishes, other seeds and some red cabbages and other plants now that the deep freeze (s) are over (we hope)... Weather has been awefull,,, just now it feels like spring finally,,, warm and sunny... bye bye,,, Gary
After yesterday, you should have an abundance of water in those barrels.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yes, Susi,,, they are half full now, and that's just from sitting under the roof edge!!! I plan to put a gutter on to catch all the water,,, Gary
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Now that would really keep the water levels full but once the first barrel is full - you wouldn't be able to move it to put the next one under - - or - - you could put the gutter up for the length of the roof - - then put drains every 30 inches or so and put a barrel under each drain - - that way you fill all the barrels at once and no water gets wasted on the ground.....;-)
