F stop Tutorial

A short and easy course on what an F stop means to you in basics with an emphasis on humor.

This album is dedicated to SusanA, who made me a bald man over night.

    Sheesh, thanks for the headache
I totally get it, but wonder, why didn't they just make it so that a small F stop number is a small opening and a large F stop is a large opening?  Why reverse it?

    That is the question
The optical viewing angle of the lens does not change with aperture. Aperature does determine the convergence angle of the rays of light entering the lens and that determines the depth of field. Rays that converge to a point at the imager produce a sharp image, regardless of convergence angle. Rays that converge either behind of in front of the imager plane produce a blurry image. The greater the angle, the greater the defocus. The convergence angle determines the depth of field. A smaller aperture restricts the collection of light to those rays that are more parallel; thus, the convergence angle is small; thus, a longer region of acceptable focus; thus, a longer DOF.

    What's up with the box?
Right !!!! The higher the number of the f stop ,the slower the shutter speed that you use ............I think? Because the higher number is the smaller fraction of light getting in so the shutter needs to be open longer to capture the detail ? If I've finally understood this then I shall be back in a week when I have reversed the information in my mind & then I'll be able to turn the page ......................f certainly means fried for me!

righto. because the lens is not letting enough light in, the shutter has to stay open longer than if the lens were wide open.

mmmmmmmmmm so that takes me right back to the original question over the colour red , I think so anyway....?
Maybe I should try it a few times & see if it eliminates my problem in our harsh light during the summer day time ....
