Byodo-in Buddhist Temple in Uji

The temple’s Phoenix Hall, which looks into the country’s most famous reflecting pond, houses a marvelous statue of Amida Buddha made by Jocho, the most famous sculptor of Buddhist images, who lived during the late Heian Period (XIth century).

The statue “Amida Nyorai of Jo-Roku” is Japan’s national treasure. You are not allowed to take picture of the statue from inside the Phoenix Hall. Amida Buddha is venerated by the “Pure Land” Buddhist sect as the Buddha of Infinite Light. Accompanied by numerous Bosatsu on clouds (the statues of which are hung on the walls surrounding the statue of Amida Nyorai), he comes to deceased to take them to Paradise.
