WELCOME

We invite you to join us Saturday and Sunday, October 4 & 5, 2008. This year the Kuumba Family is focusing on the theme “Locked On Freedom”

For the last fourteen years the Locks Conference has promoted self-determination and served as a true community effort and an excellent living example of the Nguzo Saba principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith).

The Locks Conference is cultural, educational and spiritual event which has become a community institution offering informative workshops, knowledgeable speakers, fun-filled, and powerful family activities. These two days are filled with teaching, learning, celebration, and shopping. They provide a wonderful opportunity for the folks to witness the Nguzo Saba principles in action, to be surrounded by positive energy, and to reconnect to like minds.

General admission is still only $5.00 for each day. This year because of popular demand we will also have available an expanded program /resource directory for the small donation of $2.00

“Chance has never yet satisfied the hope of a suffering people. Action, self-reliance, the vision of self, and the future have been the only means by which the oppressed have seen and realized the light of their own freedom.”

Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey

Remembering the founder Sharon Goodman’s big smile and dedication, revitalized energy, much more drumming/advertising, and the spirit of the times make our much anticipated cultural event one to attend and to encourage others to come out to. The healing activities, marketplace, and presentations just seem to get better and better, making the Locks Conference the place to be!

If you are interested in participating in our International Marketplace, please email us at Locksconference@verizon.net or contact the vending coordinator, Queen Samiyah Mu-El at 215-888-6509 (after 8:00 PM) / 215--232-9527 or call Mama Akosua Ali-Sabree at

Asante Sana for your continued support.

Press Release

Hair Piecez: The Anthology

It’s here, it’s here! Hot off the presses, the book Hair Piecez: The Anthology is now available.

Hair Piecez: The Anthology is a collection of thoughtful, inspiring, and power packed verses. This book is revealing, funny, and on time! It is a wonderful example of original poetry, short stories, interviews, and beautiful artwork and photographs. The combined writings of thirty selected artists from across the country make for interesting and mind opening reading that will touch your heart, tickle your funny bone, and stir fond and curious memories. This anthology provides reflection and truth in such a soulful way. The anthology illustrates the significant role that our "natural-when-born" hair plays in shaping our individual and collective consciousness from birth to death and in between, especially in our quest for psychic liberation and self-realization.

The editors have worked diligently to present a wholistic view of our natural hair experience and to make Hair Piecez a worthy commemorative publication celebrating the more than ten years of the Annual International Locks Conference: Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Expo.

The following is a calendar of summer readings and book signings you are all invited to attend and share with your friends and families. For more information and/or to order books through snail mail, contact Ujima Press RC at 1-888-330-8005 ujimaprc@aol.com
