2016 STREET OUTLAWS DADDY DAVE AT BEAVER SPRINGS DRAGWAY
Jul 1, 2016

Beaver Springs Dragway, Beaverton, Pa

Daddy Dave from the 405 took on local hero Andy Jensen on a beautiful Friday night at Beaver. Daddy Dave Comstock and his Goliath 2.0 nitrous gulping Chevy II got smoked by Andy Jensen's twin turbo small block Pro Mod Camaro. Good stuff.

Also on the grounds and blasting down track was the Mid-Atlantic Street Outlaws and the Beaver's own Insane 8 Shoot-Out. Good times...Check it out, the place was packed....

Variety was the order of the day during this Saturday afternoon at Maple Grove. Tons of cool stuff going down track. We had the rained out and rescheduled Mega Mopar Action event, featuring a great car show and Mopar bracket racing. The Grove also had their Northeast Index Series with full fields of 8.50, 10.00, 11.50 and 12.50 racers. And rounding out the day was the .90 Circuit with Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street doing what they do best, trip zip and dead on all afternoon. Check it out....

2016 CARLISLE FORD NATIONALS
Jun 3, 2016

Carlisle Fairgrounds, Carlisle, Pa

The 2016 Carlisle Ford Nationals was huge. Like 3,200 registered show vehicles and over 50,000 weekend spectators huge. Carlisle claims it’s the largest all Ford show in the world and numbers like that make that point tough to argue. Ford Motor Company had a large presence with the Ford Racing display with the new GT350 Mustang, Focus RS, Raptor and the all new GT on site for all to drool over. You could even purchase various pieces of bolt-on go-fast stuff and have it installed on site by certified Ford techs. The two lifts and the team of mechanics were busy from dusk to dawn each day installing cat-back exhaust, cold air kits, wheels and more.

Special displays for the 50th anniversary of the Bronco, a celebration of Roush Performance and easily the largest gathering of Starsky and Hutch Torinos were events within the event. Gateway Bronco of Missouri brought the ultimate Bronco, Parnelli Jones’ Big Oly. We spent hours poring over the details of this all original piece off road history. Jack Roush dispatched a crew to bring a bunch of cars from his collection to Carlisle. On display was various prototype Roush Mustangs and F150s, NASCAR examples and Jack’s daughter Susan’s propane powered 8-second Mustang direct from the NMRA circuit. The standout for this reporter was the recently restored 1969 Super Stock 428 Cobra Jet Mustang Convertible that Wayne Gapp ran at Indy in the early 1970’s. My wife had to shake me out of a chrome daze after I lost myself staring at this glorious machine. Oh, those Keystones on those fat slicks….but it wasn’t just cars drawing attention. Zebra 3, Zebra 3, Code 3, Detective Starsky and his buddy, Huggy Bear were onsite posing for pictures and signing all sorts of things. You could even have Starsky drive you around the road course in your Torino, for a fee, of course. Don’t laugh; they had long lines all weekend.

Of course, the showfield was overflowing with every year and model of vintage Mustangs, Fairlanes, Mavericks, Pintos, Falcons Thunderbirds, Galaxies, Cougars and F-Series trucks. The modern Ford enthusiasts and their rides dominated the weekend though, hordes of late model (say, 2000 and newer) Mustangs, Focuses (Foci?) and F-series trucks of all manner. The photos tell the story. Add in a happening swap meet, a manufactures midway, seminars and good weather and it was no wonder the 2016 Ford Nationals was a record breaker. Don’t miss it in 2017.

High Street, Pottstown, Pa

We use to cruise up and down High Street but now we just get to park on it once a month. Still a fun time.

Bonus shots of some of the surviving mid-century signage and façade architecture on this once thriving small town street.

2016 MOTORSPORTS RACECAR AND TRADE EXPO
Jan 22, 2016

As the first major snowstorm of the year began to dump 2 plus feet of snow on Southeastern Pa, racers and fans from all over filed into the Greater Pennsylvania Expo Center for the 2016 Motorsports Racecar and Trade Show to get a glimpse of the upcoming race season. While mostly a dirt track and roundy-round exposition, each year more drag racers are showing off their stuff. We spied a few Top Dragsters, a bracket car or two and even a juiced up BBC powered Buick looking for trouble. The S&W Performance Group featured their built in-house Super Stock Cobra Jet Mustang of Belles Motorsports, a real work of art featuring many of the same pieces on display in their booth. Nostalgia drag fans were treated to the Frantic Ford N/FC and Paul Gold’s Logghe Chassis slingshot, each looking resplendent with blown Hemis sitting between their rails. A new and very cool feature for 2016 was Dom Lagana and the Twilight Zone Top Fuel Team demonstrating what is involved during between rounds maintenance of a modern fuel engine. As a big crowd surrounded the car, the team pulled the supercharger, manifold and heads while Dom fielded questions from the curious onlookers, explaining the process, parts and pieces. They then reassembled the engine and gave a detailed dissertation about the inner workings and importance of the clutch. It was very informative and entertaining, definitely the hit of the show.

Another major attraction is the variety of vintage Dirt Trackers that assemble each year. A nice mix of restos and untouched survivors of the violent battle grounds of legendary facilities such as Syracuse, Flemington, Langhorne, Wall, Reading Fairgrounds and more were lined up nerf bar to nerf bar. My pick was Gary Balough’s Batmobile, an infamous and controversial New York State Fairgrounds killer. Balough and Greg Weld (yes, that Weld) shod, at the time, the most high –tech dirt modified with Lincoln Town Car sheet metal. Insane. I had heard stories about the 112 and there it was sitting before my eyes. You can spend hours checking out the tricks and details of the car. Do yourself a favor and fire up the google machine and read about this deal. Loads of other vintage greatness was on hand too, like a Buzzy Reutimann Coupe, the Bowes Seal Fast Special from 1958, a Steve Kinser Winged Outlaw, a few Tobias cars and a bitchin’ Modified Valiant. Along with cars there was an awesome collection of memorabilia to ogle as well. Those killer old hand lettered track signs, body panels and helmets just oozed coolness.

One of the other benefits of this pre-season show is seeing all the latest racing hardware all shined up and clean before the getting all battle scarred and dirty as the season progresses. Gleaming Sprints, Late-Models, Modifieds and more were everywhere. A wide assortment of vendors hawked there latest products while answering questions, bench racing was non-stop and all the northeast tracks handed out schedules and flyers to help you fill in your race season calendar. This is annually a great mid-winter event but heading out at the end of the night into a serious snowstorm was a swift kick in the jewels, a reminder that spring is still a few months away. Stay warm.

My Collection of Stuff - Updated 5/24/16

Welcome to my collection of Drag Racing and Hot Rod Stuff. These are things that I have accumulated over my 42 years of fun livin’ in this automotive sport/hobby/lifestyle/addiction.....You will see lots of cool car-related stuff like toys, magazines, used-up parts, photos, trophys, art, stickers, posters, record albums, model kits, jackets, helmets, Ed Roth/Rat Fink items and a plethora of other trinkets. Some of my stuff may have some value, most of it doesn’t, except that it makes me smile. Just about everything has a story or memory attached to it and in that lies the value to me. Some of these things I’ve held onto since I was a child, some I’ve just recently acquired; the collection is always slowly expanding. So have look around and thanks for checking out my stuff…..
Comments and Questions are welcomed…..
