Did a morning hike with my brother Keith and my dog Hiker. Had never hiked this area before. It's a short hike but a little to strenuous for me.

Foggy Day Hike In Rice Canyon
Apr 23, 2012

This morning was very overcast due to a marine layer here in SoCal. My brother Keith, Hiker and I headed over to Rice Canyon for a hike. Everything was very damp due to the marine layer, but it was very green due to the late rains we've been having this year. As soon as we started out on the trail, we encountered a lone coyote. He seemed very used to people as he just sat and watched us from afar. We also encountered a gopher snake on our way back down the trail. The creek was running and there were a few wildflowers. We got pretty wet as it was misting and the tall grass was very wet.

Haskell Canyon Open Space
Apr 21, 2012

This morning my brother Keith, Hiker and I headed over to the Haskell Canyon Open Space for a hike. We had never hiked this area before. It was not a very scenic hike. It appears that this canyon is very popular with BMX bikers as they had ramps set up everywhere for their jumps and some of those jumps were pretty high. I took photos of some of their ramps.

Another Short Hike In Quigley Canyon
Apr 7, 2012

It was such a beautiful afternoon that Hiker and I just didn't want to stay inside so we drove over to Quigley Canyon again to walk around and take some photos. We were just there two days ago but it is closer than going over to Towsley Canyon where I had thought of going at first.

Morning Hike At Quigley Canyon Open Space
Apr 5, 2012

Hiker and I joined our friends Linda and RuthAnne for a morning hike at the Quigley Canyon Open Space area. None of us had hiked this area before. It has 4 trails ranging from easy to difficult. It was a beautiful morning for a hike. We saw a deer running up the side of the mountain, but I was unable to get a photo of it as the sun was in my eyes which means it was also pointing straight into my lens which caused a lot of glare.

Two Hike Morning
Mar 29, 2012

My friend Linda came by and picked me and Hiker up at 7:30 am this morning and we headed to Rocky Peak near Simi Valley to a trail she discovered last week called The Hummingbird Trail. It was a very steep trail with some great views of the Simi Valley. We did almost 2 miles on that trail then decided to drive under the freeway and head over to the Corriganville Movie Ranch and hike a little there too. We did about 2 miles at the ranch also. The movie ranch has a loop trail that has sign posts explaining what movies and TV shows were filmed there. Has a lot of "Hollywood History". I had been to Corriganville Ranch before, but Linda had never been there and she enjoyed the history of the place. Hiker enjoyed both of the hikes.

Morning Hike To Towsley Narrows With Hiker

Had originally thought about going hiking in Placerita Canyon but was afraid it would be too muddy from our last rain storm because the trail is mostly in the shadows of the canyon walls so we headed to Towsley Canyon and hiked to The Narrows.

Another Towsley Canyon Hike
Feb 23, 2012

The weather here in SoCal has been like summer in February. It has been so beautiful out so Hiker and I headed over to Towsley Canyon again and headed out on one of our favorite hikes to The Narrows. The temperature was already in the 70's when we got there and the parking lot was full as usual. Doesn't matter if it's a week day or a weekend, this place is always crowded. We did about a 3 mile hike in total.

Short Hike On Trail Behind Central Park - Saugus, CA
Feb 9, 2012

It was 85 deg. this afternoon and Hiker and I wanted to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. I drove us over to Central Park in Saugus, CA where we hiked up the trail that is in the hills behind the park. The trail starts out very steep but once you are on top of the ridge, it's not bad. Nice views.

Me & Hiker Headin' For The Narrows
Jan 28, 2012

The weather was so beautiful today that I just didn't want to stay in the house. It was 74 deg. and sunny so I put Hiker into the 4Runner and we headed over to Towsley Canyon to hike to The Narrows. The afternoon shadows make the canyon look different than when I usually hike it in the morning. Hiker was worn out when we got home. She went to sleep on the sofa.

Hike Behind William S. Hart Park
Jan 27, 2012

Linda had emailed me about a walking/hiking group that meets up every Friday at William S. Hart Park for hikes. She wanted to check them out so I packed up Hiker and we picked up Linda and headed over to the park. About 10 or 12 people showed up (mostly seniors) and we all headed out for the Bison Road for a 2 1/2 mile hike. The group took off in a flash while Linda, Hiker and I lagged behind. We are not used to steep trails and Linda was getting pretty winded so I hung back to walk with her. The rest of the group was always about a quarter of a mile ahead of us, but kept checking on us whenever they could see us form a higher level of the trail. By the time Hiker, Linda and I got back to the parking lot most of the people had left but 3 of them were waiting there to make sure we got back OK. It was very cloudy, but the view from the top of the ridge was great. Had a nice morning.

4 Mile Hike in Placerita Canyon
Jan 18, 2012

Linda wanted to do a local hike and suggested Placerita Canyon. She came over this morning and the 3 of us (Linda, Hiker & Me) headed over to the Placerita Natural Area and hiked the Canyon Trail up to Walker Ranch. Was very cold when we first got there but warmed up nicely by the time we got back to the parking lot.

Photo-Op Hike At Vasquez Rocks
Jan 13, 2012

My friend Linda came by today to pickup me and Hiker and we headed for Agua Dulce, CA to a store called "Bullwinkle's". It is a specialty shop and they want to sell Linda's totes that she makes from recycled plastic grocery bags. After she negotiated with them, we went next door to the "Sweetwater Cafe". It's a small town cafe with really good food. We decided since we were only a couple of miles from Vasquez Rocks County Park that we'd go over there for a "photo-op". We walked around on some trails that we'd never been on before. We did about 2.12 miles on this beautiful day.

Hike On The Loop Trail In The Devil's Punchbowl
Jan 5, 2012

Today, my friend Linda and I took Hiker out to Pearblossom, CA to the Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area. Ben and I went to this sight back in November 2009 and I have always wanted to go back and hike the trail down into the "bowl". Ben was not a hiker, so he didn't want to go down the trail when he and I were there. The trail is about a mile long, but takes about an hour or more depending on how fast you walk and how often you stop along the way. It descends 300 ft. into the "bowl" and takes you all the way to the bottom where there is a year-round creek. But then...you have to climb back up out of the "bowl". This area is part of the San Andreas Faultline so these rocks are "thrust faults" coming up out of the ground from pressure put on them by two plates of the Earth's crust pushing into each other.

Here is a link to the Devil's Punchbowl Website if you'd like to check it out:
