(NOTE: This is not CPX 700 /900 series or APX… those are of inferior quality)
Yamaha Compass Series CPX15E. Yamaha very limited run of the CPX15 series.
Yamaha issued 4 guitars for each compass point a CPX15-N, CPX15-S, CPX15-W and CPX15-E. Each of the special edition CPX Compass Series 15 line used different woods and themes for each guitar. The woods utilized were for color and relative alignment with the design and were hand selected from Yamaha’s select stock.
For seasoned guitarists, the CPX15E is a carefully hand crafted guitar designed by consulting professionals.
Scalloped spruce top bracing is forward shifted X Braced, placing it closer to the sound hole, which renders a much fuller and articulate bass response. The guitar features a solid hand-selected spruce top with back and sides of Rare Quilted Mahogany adding richness both visually and sonically. Consulting professionals suggested high end features, such as ebony fingerboard, and a well designed ebony bridge, with adjustable saddle. This enables personalization to the guitarist style. Both finger style players or heavy strummers can set string action to match any playing mode. The neck is solid mahogany with a rosewood headstock overlay and features a shallow C shape with a slight V taper. The frets are medium/jumbo nickel in excellent shape. Built for performing artists, it is ‘Stage Ready’ with gold plated sealed tuners and strap pins. CPX15E features a dual action pickup system consisting of an internal condenser mic, and piezo pickup system, designed by L.R. Baggs. Preamp has 4 band EQ with Mid Boost, Frequency and Blend controls for mixing piezo with internal mic output. Ingenious battery location on shoulder. Uses a 9V that gets slipped into a case then snap loads in place! Essentially you’re provided the sound sculpting ability to pull amazingly true acoustic sound from any PA or amp. Guitar feels solid! Should be around a lot longer than any of us… Built in 1999, it has been cared for, and Shows only light signs of use, no major dings, scratches. Has Clear pick guard (to see rosette) Nice, but very thin chip. Can see in pic.
The theme of the CPX15E is the Eastern world influence, which aptly uses Egyptian symbolic references.
Starting with a stunning desert sand burst finish. The Theme on the CPX15E invokes ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic inlays on the guitar. Neck inlays upon the 3, 5, 7, 9, 15 and 17, create a tasteful X by inlay of 4 triangles. The 12th fret inlay is a bird with turquoise center dot. The rosette itself reveals the hand made detail of the guitar. A rosette of Padauk, Cypress and Rosewood with inlaid Ankh (Symbol of Eternal Life) complete the Egyptian design, which is quite classy. Headstock features a Rosewood overlay with an inlaid Compass Star that consists of multiple colors in abalone and wood, with Yamaha in pearl. The guitar features a beautiful glossy finish. The stunning bookmatched quilted mahogany includes a back strip of maple, just adding to the very tasteful ornamentation. Cream colored multi-ply binding adorns every edge including the headstock.

CPX15EJuly 23, 1999 -- At Winter NAMM, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division, Guitars, set a new standard in performance, styling and sound when it introduced the Compass Series of professional-quality Handcrafted acoustic guitars. That impressive line grows with the addition of the CPX15E "East" model, which boasts a unique "Sand burst" finish and new Eastern motif details.
Like the other members of the series, the CPX15E will offer a unique single-cutaway body shape with a solid sitka spruce top to deliver a stirringly clear and articulate acoustic sound. The bound ebony fingerboard ensures the precise tone and fast action that professionals crave. If that's not enough, an L.R. Baggs pickup system/preamp combines a bridge-mounted piezo with a microphone, which can be blended for stunningly realistic acoustic sound amplified.
"Players will want to plug this guitar in for the full effect," states Gary Cook, Guitar product manager. "The highs are strong and clear, providing a realism that is unprecedented."
Yamaha is commited to bold and unique visual styling. The CPX15E's Eastern motif is achieved by using the finest materials available, including gold die-cast tuners and a stunningly beautiful sound-hole hieroglyphic, realized in such rare woods as Mahogany, Rosewood, Cypress and Padauk. A complimentary Pyramid and crest inlay set off the fingerboard.
Yamaha Combo Group marketing manager David Bergstrom asserts, "The new Compass CPX15E is for the player who has definitive ideas about how an acoustic guitar should sound when amplified or recorded. The looks are bold and will definitely turn heads."
