Vreeswijk Princes Beatrix Sluices

One of the most interesting things to see around Utrecht is the Princes Beatrix Sluices or canal locks. It is amazing to see the vertical rising sluice gate, controlling the water levels so that the boats, ships and yachts can go their way. The excitement of seeing the sluices closing behind a boat, then waiting for the water level to drop and finally the sound of the sirene when the front sluices are hoisted up. The water twirling and swirling, making crazy patterns, reminding of scenes out of the space movie “Coccoon”. Then the front of the boat appears and one can watch it float right underneath the bridge where one has a prime view of the event. During my last visit I saw the biggest ship ever going through the canal. There were only inches to spare on both sides. I have captured this happening in the series of photos, “Princes Beatrix Sluices”.
