Cabin 5170, Outside Standard aft port, Atlantic Deck 5 Marina Deck 3, Arts & Crafts

Outside Standard Cabin 5170
Feb 17, 2008

Atlantic Deck 5 port aft. A 3 berth good sized cabin, clean [except for some rust streaks under the window], fresh with new carpets & pleasantly decorated. Plenty of cupboards and drawers for a long trip. Coffee/tea maker with Highland Shortbread biscuits, safe [PIN operated], European 2 round pin 220v outlets & 110v US flat pin where the flat screen TV is plugged in, but no earth for a 2 flat/1 round lead. One bed was along the bulkhead under the window which was nice. The window ledge was screened off with a Perspex panel. 3rd berth, a bunk above the 2nd bed.

Bathroom with shower [double length] was an adequate size with masses of storage space. 110v shaver socket. Shower gel/shampoo & hand soap by means of dispenser & also other toiletries in a small muslin bag with shoe cleaning kit, shower cap etc. Completely useless 650w US hairdryer; even if you have cropped hair it would never dry. Plenty of soft white towels. Poolside towels are yellow, provided by the cabin steward/ess & need to be returned.

Interactive TV for cabin shopping, ordering wine for the table, shore excursions, bill check etc Free View Classic Movies & a selection of pay-per-view films. Bow view & trip information. The latter was lacking with detail & did not give details of the ship's speed/sea state/wind force or direction. Merely showing your position in various zooms using Google Earth. I kept touching the screen expecting the info to pop-up as per the ships' locator on Fred. Olsen's website - sadly not. The TV was not fully functional at times losing the link; but work on installation of the system was still ongoing.

A card with magnetic strip [either cabin key card or any other] needs to be in the slot by the door for electricity. Remove it & the lights go out.. remember to leave something in there if charging camera batteries etc.

Arts & Crafts Room, Medical Centre Info & Deck 3 Hallways - Balmoral
Feb 17, 2008

Down on Marina Deck 3 midships is the Arts & Craft Room. Bright & White; no windows. Table Tennis [maybe a bit of a low ceiling] & darts too.
Crafts Classes with Chris Birch included “St. Valentine’s Day Card” & “Beadwork Bracelet”
Watercolour Classes with Eric Kay “Introduction to Watercolour” “Colour Mixing: Landscape Techniques”

Not cheap if one has to visit the Doc on a ship.
The Launderette has a bit of a way to go before being functional!!

Lido Lounge - Balmoral
Feb 17, 2008

Lido Deck 8 aft. The venue for all sorts and 2nd Show Lounge. Concerts, Music for Dancing & Listening, Dolphin Racing, Various Group Meets/Parties, Gaming Tables [2 port aft], Bingo & an Evening Showtime Session [2 Presentations]. Aft is the Lido Bar under 'glass' overlooking stern pool; unfortunately I do not appear to have taken any photos here :( A lovely area with great views.

Stairwells, Hallways & Lifts - Balmoral
Feb 16, 2008

The original Aft & Fwd Stairwells remain; giltzy, glass, shiny. In comparison the new midships stairwell is quite plain with white walls top & bottom but a bit of faux panelling in the centre & a handful of pictures. The carpet in all hallways is identical; the same carpet used in many areas & also on other ships in the Fred. Olsen fleet.
A few lift/elevator photos & signage. The installation of the signs is very poor. Where the old names have been removed, nothing has been done to touch up the surfaces; just the new ones [smaller] plonked in their places.
