Queens Room, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

The Queens Room aboard QUEEN ELIZABETH is double decked [Decks 2 & 3] just forward of the Grand Lobby to port. A magnificent room with a large 1000 sq ft dance floor of inlaid wood, crystal chandeliers & backlit glass panels. This is where the Balls, Cocktail Parties and Afternoon Tea take place. The aft bulkheads are covered with murals by Marian Westall of Hampton Court Palace and Balmoral Castle.
To starboard [Deck 2] across the walk through is the Queens Arcade. A seating area with replicas of the paintings of Princess Elizabeth & the Duke of Edinburgh [Edward Halliday] originally aboard CARONIA and then QE2 and of Queen Elizabeth [the Queen Mother] [Sir Oswald Birley] originally aboard Queen Elizabeth 1940.
One also find the Bust of Queen Elizabeth II by Oscar Nemon previously in the Queens Room aboard QE2 and a super acrylic sculpture by Peter Simpson depicting a curved Lighthouse Lens - it needs to be in a more prominent position! Although passed by regularly by all aboard I am not sure it is noticed.

The Grand Lobby, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

The Grand Lobby aboard QUEEN ELIZABETH spans 3 decks, Deck 1 with the Purser's, Tours and Voyage Sales Offices; The Internet Centre and Connexions 1, Deck 2 surrounded by Café Carinthia, The Library and The Verandah and Deck 3 with the Midships Bar, Card Room and Library upper level [See separate albums for these areas].
The Grand Lobby is dominated by the superb marquetry panel by David Linley depicting the original QUEEN ELIZABETH with a map inset into an art déco pattern. No less than 13 different woods have been used in the design.
Sadly I did not get an opportunity to take close up snaps of the super monochrome murals behind the Tours and Purser's Offices which should be in more accessible places to view without feeling 'embarrassed' at looking! :) [by Arnold Schwartzman, the one behind the Tours Office depicts Southampton's original Ocean Terminal in part http://imprint.printmag.com/daily-heller/her-majestys-new-mural/ ]

Commodore Club, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

QUEEN ELIZABETH's Commodore Club forward Deck 10 with super views, but the bridge is in the way of a decent bow one and the angled glass does reflect back on itself from various angles. Mainly in the usual browns it is semi-circular in shape with a raised bar area in the centre. Two murals by Robert Lloyd grace the room, of a meeting of the Three Queens and QUEEN ELIZABETH in Sydney Harbour. There are other Porthole images of the current Cunard fleet and QE2 by Robert Lloyd.
A series of photographs from the Mauretania Restaurant on QE2 are positioned around the bar area and outside the entrance to stb one finds QE2's Builder's Plaque, QE2's Original Bell [from Three Deck, D Stairway on QE2] and QE's [1940] Bell. There is a small model of QUEEN ELIZABETH above the bar, just visible in a couple of photos - January 2012

The Yacht Club, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

The Yacht Club, Deck 10 fwd overlooking the Pavilion Pool. Marquetry floor with compass and a nautical themed ceiling [the outdoor giant chess set is above]. Nightclub venue with DJ and dancing from 21:30 each night.
Here is the 'new home' of Asprey & Co's [of Bond Street] silver QE2 model previously displayed in Midships Lobby on Two Deck of QUEEN ELIZABETH 2. A painting of QE2 escorting NZ ENDEAVOUR into Southampton on 1 June 1994 by Stephen Munday - Jan 2012

Midships Bar, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 12, 2012

The Midships Bar aboard QUEEN ELIZABETH, deck 3 to stb of The Grand Lobby. There is a model of RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH [1940] along with 3 display cases of memorabilia from the original QUEEN ELIZABETH.
Two large murals by Marian Westall are adaptations of art aboard the old QUEEN MARY - "Map of the North Atlantic" MacDonald Gill from the Grand Salon [1st Class Dining Room] and "Unicorns in Battle" by Alfred Oakley and Gilbert Bayes from the Queens Salon [1st Class Lounge]. A mural by Allan Baillie entitled "Chanin 5" and bronze panels, hand carved, inspired by the doors aboard QUEEN MARY - January 2012

The Golden Lion, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

The Golden Lion Pub aboard QUEEN ELIZABETH is on Deck 2 stb opposite the Empire Casino. Quite a dark room in my opinion, but very popular and always quite full with those taking part in the many quizzes for which it is the venue. The pub lunches are tasty - see menu. Beverages aboard QE seemed quite pricey to us, some photos of the list here - January 2012

Royal Court Theatre, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

QUEEN ELIZABETH's Royal Court Theatre spans Deck 1, 2 & 3 forward. Seating 821 people in stalls, balconies and boxes. The predominant colour is blue, however it is more lilac/purple with the lighting. For an extra fee of $50 + 15% service charge one can book a Theatre Box for certain performances. This includes chocolates and Veuve Clicquot champagne served by 'White Star Bellboys' with a bar area lined with photos of stars who have sailed Cunard ships. [The view from some of these boxes is not ideal and reflections on the glass frontages] - January 2012

Library and Bookshop, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

QUEEN ELIZABETH's Library spans Decks 2 & 3 to port midships, connected by a spiral staircase. Plenty of books [approx 6,000] of all types and a few chairs dotted around. The leaded glass ceiling was created by John Hardman & Company. The globe on the lower level was produced for Philips and from the era of Cunard’s first Queen Elizabeth 1940 - January 2012
QUEEN ELIZABETH's Bookshop Deck 2 to stb midships run by Ocean Books has many nautical books along with stationary type souvenirs and postcards. Book signings by the enrichment programme lecturers and authors aboard take place here. [NB if you want a sticker for any purchases within stating "Purchased onboard" you need to ask for it nowadays].

Empire Casino & Royal Arcade, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

The Empire Casino and Royal Arcade aboard Cunard Line's QUEEN ELIZABETH. The Royal Arcade [shops, including the usual tables at various times along the hallways of 'sale' items] on Deck 3 [fwd of the Queens Room] overlooks the Empire Casino to port below on Deck 2. The two areas are connected by a rather overly 'grand' double curving staircase with a Dent Clock in the centre. Rather 'twee' imho :) - January 2012
The stained glass ceiling in the casino is hand painted by Angelique Jackson.

Balcony Cabin Stateroom 5168, QUEEN ELIZABETH - Jan 2012
Jan 11, 2012

Standard Balcony Cabin, Stateroom, 5168 on Deck 5 to port/aft. Pretty much like all standard cabins, however there was barely sufficient storage for 2 for a week, let alone any longer.
3 single hanging wardrobes and a 4th with shelves although one contained the safe [card or PIN use] and life jackets at the top. 3 small drawers in each of the bedside tables and small drawer under the end of the bed. No cupboards in the bathroom and only 4 glass shelves with a rail through which many things can slip under and shelf under the basin.
Shower curtain, but large enough shower so it doesn't cling. No soap/gel dispensers, but bars of soap and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries supplied in small bottles, replenished when required. Tub with ear buds and cotton wool balls. The shower had a single curved shelf which took nothing but a bar of soap and small bottle. Anything else did not fit due to the curve. Water pressure was very poor at all times, but the temperature was consistent.
Sofa, chair and small table, ice bucket. Small dresser with fridge in the cupboard. Flat screen TV, but missed the point as merely fitted on the unit where an older heavy item would have been in place. Loose brackets. This would have been better used as a table top. Typical "just about does" hairdryer in the top drawer with a cord just long enough to see in the mirror. Balcony with 2 chairs and table, glass to rail, Bolidt synthetic decking. Room service breakfast was fine and arrived on time. Large gap around cabin door letting in the light, not noisy though. US and UK style outlets on the dresser. Bedside lamps rattle a lot in rough weather :) Good comfortable bedding, masses of pillows. Bathrobe and slippers - January 2012
