All the photos in this little album (except the few included that he had taken at Clear Creek High School) were discovered in his personal possessions that were returned to his parents from Mosul, Iraq, two months after he left this life on December 7, 2003. Thirty days before that date, in early November, he had received a digital camera sent to him by his family that finally reached Mosul. Some of these photos were taken the very last week of his life, with that little Sony digital camera that he was so happy to get.....

It's amazing that something so beautiful is where so many tragic incidents occur. I'm glad that there is something like that for the soliders.

Major David Toon will leave this month for Iraq. He has been our Casualty Assistance Officer out here since we moved to Phoenix. The Army assigned him to the Hutchinson family, and he has been a great help. David Toon is an amazing soldier, a warrior, and man of Faith. He wears one of Ray Joseph's "dog tags" with his own. I have asked David to go to this bridge over the Tigris in Mosul. And when he gets to the center of that bridge, I have asked him to drop Ray Joseph's "dog tag" into the deepest part of the Tigris River. The enemy may think that Ray Joseph is gone, but he is not. Ray Joseph left an indelible mark of Faith, courage, service, strength, and compassion that continues on. These things find their source in God, so they are lasting. Ray Joseph walks in God's company now, and the work of his life continues on.-Submitted by Deborah Hutchinson.

I made a mistake referring to these vehicles as enemy tanks. Though Ray's squad and platoon came upon numerous ememy tanks---which they had to destroy if the tanks were not already gutted---what you're seeing here are American Bradleys. When I showed these photos to Ray Joseph's battle buddies and close friends when we visited Ft. Campbell in March, they helped me identify many of the photos that were found in Ray Joseph's camera--like this one. Please excuse my mistake. They still look eerie to me, though!

So pristine yet shockingly sad. True talent from the photographer who, after reading about him, seems like a young man anyone would have been blessed to know.
