Ospreys

I still have to remove and surplus images from this album.

For the second set of photos, the ones with the nest, I was using my "motor drive" feature on my camera. They are not great shots but I was using my binoculars as a telephoto lens, of sorts, which explains the dark edge on some images and the lack of focus on some. That nest was a good distance away, on private property so I couldn't get close enough to get any "good" shots.

Canada Day, Fort William

It was very quiet when we were there, no festivities (not until much later in the day, apparently), unfortunately and the weather was very iffy. It was beautiful, though and I would like to go up again and be able to explore a bit more.

Anne's cottage

Photos I took for myself at the reunion.

A day of firsts. As we left the main road, we encountered two young deer with their small velvety antlers standing eating lilac leaves by the side of the road. Unfazed, they kept eating and watching us as we sat and watched them. Later, a deer headed out across the lake. We watched for some time at it swam off across the widest part of the lake and behind an island before making landfall and heading into the bush.

Then there were the Monarch butterfly larvae. An amazing day!

NGDHS Class of 1961 reunion. My mother taught these lovely people 46 years ago and had a lovely day reacquainting herself with them.

Heron

These are the shots with the Heron. These I have made so that you can access the original images. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to see it. I think the Heron in the river scene is the same as in the scene near the disused detention centre. It is a very short distance away.

Parliament Hill Cats

One of the more unusual tourist attractions on Parliament Hill, in Ottawa, the seat of Canadian government, is the Parliament Hill Cat Colony.

Some of the cats are the descendants of cats who lived in the Parliament Buildings and took care of the rodents. When they were replaced with rodent poisons, they were no longer welcome indoors and became homeless.

They had to fend for themselves or depend on the kindness of Hill employees. Groundskeepers fed them in different locations until around 1970.

At that point, a woman named Irene Desormeaux began feeding them where the colony now resides. In the mid-1980s, Rene Chartrand began assisting her, building some wooden structures for them to shelter in. Irene died in 1987 and Rene has been looking after the cats, faithfully since that time. He is assisted by 8 volunteers, now. Veterinary care is provided by the Alta Vista Animal Hospital and Purina provides food. Visitors can and do leave donations.

All the cats are "fixed" and released back into the colony. Strays sometimes join the colony and sometimes people abandon their cats at the colony. However, newcomers aren't guaranteed to be accepted and are usually driven off my the other cats.

"Please under no circumstances abandon cats or kittens on the Hill or by the Cat Sanctuary. The cats will not readily accept newcomers and for the most part chase them away. Nor is it a given new cats will find the Sanctuary in search of shelter and food. Most abandoned cats are very disorientated and will just randomly wander off finding starvation and death - especially in the winter. If you can no longer care for your cat, please take her to the Humane Society where she can be well taken care of and put up for adoption. This is what we do for any abandoned cat we find. And it causes us great grief when we cannot capture one - which happens way too often. And if you give kittens as a gift for Christmas, ensure the person or the household you give them to can provide for them. If not, then you should reconsider your priorities. No kitten deserves to be abandoned like an unwanted toy. Owning a pet is a serious responsibility. If you don't share that feeling, you shouldn't own a pet. It's as simple as that. Abandoning your pet is a criminal offense with up to 2 years in jail. Perhaps you who would be so callous should think about that. Treat your pets well, and they will reward you with unconditional love for the rest of their lives. Should we all care so much as they care for us." Klaus J. Gerken [volunteer]

Mother Barnes: "The Witch of Plum Hollow"

Jane Elizabeth Barnes (Mother Barnes) was born around 1794 in County Cork, Ireland. She and her first husband eloped and sailed for Canada, settling near Coburg, Ontario. After the death of her first husband, she remarried and she and her husband moved to Sheldon Corners, near Plum Hollow, Ontario.

Eventually, her husband, who just couldn't make a go of farming, left, taking their youngest son with him. "Mother" Barnes remained on the farm, supporting he family by reading tea leaves for 25¢.

She gained a reputation for the accuracy of her readings, as well as her "psychic gifts" and clients came from far and wide. One of her clients was reputed to be Sir John A. MacDonald.

The appelation "The Witch of Plum Hollow" was a label invented by a reporter, to spice up a story most likely. In fact, Mother Barnes was what would have been called in her day "a wise woman". She apparently knew herbs and cures. and according to her family, took care of the sick.

However, it was her psychic abilities that caught the public's attention. Unfortunately, it is difficult to tell fact from fiction in most of the stories.

Her house is still there, recently restored with plans for a museum.
