Pipestems, nails and pot shards
Pipestems, nails and pot shards found at the beach at Fort William, the HBC fort, founded 1821, called Lac des Allumettes until 1848, Quebec. These are found on the beach and in the shallows where the pipestems appear in their thousands. These were cheap, brittle and essentially disposable. Many you can see the decorative parretns on the bowls, impressed makers marks and some have a varnish finish on the mouthpiece to prevent it sticking to the lips. I also found the barrel of a HBC rifle which I still have somewhere in the house.
