What happens when you take a digital photo in colour of HDTV in black and white?

These are unretouched photos (some are cropped) of a rebroadcast of a 1960 CBC program which featured Morley Callahgan berating a panel of critics for a scathing "Saturday Night Magazine" review of one of his books.

Morley on the left, the reviewer to his left, and the tubby guy with the cheesy goatee is the, then, editor of the magazine in question.
