Chignons
I became obsessed with styling my twists into various styles in early Dec. of '08, and at some point became fascinated with trying to create a chignon. Now I don't know 'bout y'all but I've never known how to pronounce this word so I decided I should look it up. I mean I knew it was French, and I figured the g was silent, but I hadn't a clue past that.

Well I'm glad I looked it up cause it's prounounced Shin-yon. According to Webster's online dictionary, it's defined as a knot of hair worn at the nape of the neck. Alright then, a chignon it is.

Twistouts
Most nappies love twistouts. I probably would too if my hair would cooperate. I have a looser texture in the top that doesn't hold definition worth a darn, plus I usually moisturize my hair heavily and so in the summertime the little bit of definition that I do have right after a twistout just doesn't last very long. And so I don't have a lot of patience for a hair style that's not going to even last a day. Twistouts and other loose hair styles are just too much daily maintenance — the older I get, the less I really want to be bothered with my hair. That's why twists fit my life style. Most mornings I can simply roll out of bed and not have to factor hair into my get ready time.

Nevertheless, on a several occasions I've experimented with twistouts and this folders showcases these dos.

Full-head Two-strand Twists
On occasion, I break down and style my hair in all two strand twists. I have some styling issues with this though because my hairline doesn't grow well and that makes for some thin, anorexic looking twists framing my face. No matter how I try to disguise this, I usually can't and I think that really detracts from the aesthetic that I'm trying to achieve. Add to this the fact that I've discovered that I really don't like hair in my face — neither the feel or the look. I think I look better when my hair is pulled back off my face. Soooo I rarely wear my hair like this. But when I do, sometimes my styles turn out really well.

Adventures in color
Over the past couple of years I've become increasingly obssessed with coloring my hair. Not just for the sake of color but primarily to cover up my scattered gray hair, which I honestly don't like. I've tried to get used to it but I can't. Scattered gray is NOT pretty. My mom's hair is a beautiful gray and so is my friend Kim. Both of them have wonderful silver gray hair. But nope, I'm in the early stages of graying and to me, scattered gray nappy hair looks too much like lint.

But I hesitated for a long while primarily because I'm not fond of being forced to keep it up, coloring my roots on a regular basis. That's too much like having to keep a relaxer up. But in the end, my struggle with accepting my gray was lost and I gave in. This folder chronicles my journey on finding the perfect color AND my struggles to find something to cover my gray up once and for all!

Two-strand Twist Bangs
This is a variation of my signature style. Instead of parting my flat twists on a curve, I parted them at angles to one another. Then a couple of days later, to soften of my hairline, I created these bangs. I really like this finished look and will mos def be doing this one again. Confessions of an Accessories Junkie
I'm an accessories fanatic. Can't help it. I love dressing up my hair. No matter where I go, I have to stop and see if the store has any new and/or unusual pieces nap-friendly pieces in. I'm cheap so I'm always looking for a bargain, but I'll pay good money for something unusual and well made. Here a sampling of what's in my accessory box at the moment.

Three Strand Twists
Three strand twists were more than a notion to learn to do and then after I got it down pat, doing them turned out to be a pain in the butt. They take waaaay to long to do and after the first set I vowed to never do them again. Well, I did and do still occasionally do them if the mood hits me...and those moods are really far and few between. But when I do, I usually really like them. And if I'm so inclined they make the best twistouts.

Shaping My Hair
I have always wanted my hair to have a styled shape to it when I wear it in full head twists. Like a bob. I've always liked the way this cut frames my face and it's how I wore my hair for years on end when I had a perm. In order to do this, I've been on a mission to cut my layers out. When I have twists in, I have three very distinct layers, bra strap length (bsl), armpit length (apl) and shoulder length (sl). Last summer I cut my BSL up to APL. That cut really gave me a nice shape and wonderful thickness at my shoulders. Now I'm going to let my hair grow uninterrupted until June. Thats should put me near bsl again, and yep, I'll cut that off up to apl and that should get rid of my last layer. Then I'm done cutting and by December of 09, all my hair should be at or near apl.

And then, who knows? Lower back length? Waist length. Ha! That's too far away to think about at moment. :)

Box Braids
Ha! Don't get really excited. I have ONE pic of my hair in box braids. They didn't come out exactly as I would have liked so I'm not feeling this style as much as I do my twists. In fact, I'm not even going to post the one pic that was taken from the front because I just don't like it. So y'all only get a rear view pic of this. But, yeah, I'm going to wear my hair like this for awhile cause I just don't have the energy to do anything else with it, and quite frankly, it probably needs a rest from my six-month nonstop stint in twists.

Twisted high pony
This is definately my signature style for the summer. No matter how I fix my hair right now, I keep coming back to this do. It's just sooo dang simple and it holds up very well for a good seven days, and a little beyond really. I tend to start doing a refresh
