In this very active volcanic region featuring steam vents and hot mud pools, people used to recover sulfur from the earth. Sulfur is also the explanation for the rather "aromatic" smell here.

Dettifoss

This said to be the mightiest waterfall in Europe, in terms of quantities of water passing it every second - a quality though, which is not advertised by the name Dettifoss, which simply means "waterfall that falls".

Maybe "the" tourist attraction in Iceland, the hot spring known as Geysir is located close to Gullfoss. Geysir itself is not active nowadays (in 2006) anymore though; its colleague, Strokkur, has taken over for the moment.

Þórsmörk

Another remote area in the highlands. To get there, we had to cross several rivers by driving through fords. Another creek was then crossed on foot, in order to find a hidden waterfall inside a small cave. Most of the year, this region is closed due to snow.
