Chateau d'Amboise overlooks a beautiful vista of the Loire valley. The place had strategic significance since the Roman times, controlling an important river crossing. Fulk Nerra built the first stone castle. In 1434 the castle was seized by the Crown and became the favorite residence of several kings, from Charles VIII to Henry II. The chateau features some of the earliest Renaissance motifs in France and is also the origin of the French formal gardens. Leonardo da Vinci is buried in the St-Hubert Chapel on top of the chateau walls.
