Μικρό γένος κάκτων από το Μεξικό.
Το όνομα του γένους προέρχεται από τις Ελληνικές λέξεις άρια (είδος βελανιδιάς) και καρπός.
Συνώνυμα του γένους Ariocarpus είναι τα :
Anhalonium
Neogomesia
Neogomezia
Roseocactus
Stromatocactus

Η πρώτη περιγραφή του γένους έγινε το 1838 από τον Michael Joseph Francois Scheidweiler (1799–1861).
Κάποια είδη του γένους χρησιμοποιούνταν από τους ιθαγενείς σε ιεροτελεστίες, μαγείες και άλλες τελετές.

Το γένος μετά την παράνομη συλλογή φυτών και σπόρων από την φύση απειλείται από εξαφάνιση.
Οι ρίζες των ειδών του γένους είναι κονδυλώδεις και πολλαπλασιάζονται με σπόρους.
Είναι δύσκολα φυτά στην καλλιέργεια και χρειάζονται ιδιαίτερη προσοχή στο πότισμα.
