Γένος φυτών που περιλαμβάνει περίπου τετρακόσια είδη από την Αφρική, την Μαδαγασκάρη και την Αραβία.
Η APG II system (2003) τοποθέτησε το γένος στην οικογένεια Asphodelaceae αφού πρώτα πέρασε από τις οικογένειες Aloaceae και Liliaceae.
Το γένος αποτελείται από μικροσκοπικά φυτά μέχρι μεγάλα δέντρα.
Μερικά είδη του γένους, όπως η Αλόη βέρα( Aloe vera ), χρησιμοποιούνται στην ιατρική.
Πολλαπλασιάζονται με σπόρους, μοσχεύματα και παραφυάδες.
