American Kestrel

Beautiful little birds, the American Kestrel is the smallest of the falcon family with a size of 9-12 inches. I watched the first one hunting the side of a road, repeatedly watching for prey and then moving on to the next sign post after each catch. The gold background is a field of Woodland Sunflowers in bloom.

Black Necked Stilt

We came across these Black Necked Stilts at Horicon Marsh and saw their courtship ritual. The male splashs water at the side of the female and then preens and repeats this several times walking around her. He then mounts and mates with her and places his beak across hers as he slides down to her side. Keeping his beak crossed with hers they did a very dancelike pirouette together and walked side by side before breaking contact.

Blue Gray Gnatcatcher

Tiny little 41/2 inch birds just are wonderful to watch. The male has a black line running from above the eyes down to the beak which gives it a stern eyebrow appearance.

Bobolink

One of the strangest looking birds I've seen, but quite interesting. The gold feathers on the back of the head are a bit longer than those of the face, rather like a hat added on. Likewise, the white feathering on the wing and back are also a bit longer and almost wavey looking. The tail has a great zig zag shape that I haven't noticed on any other birds. Bobolink are spring grassland nesters in the midwest.

Cedar Waxwings

I don't see Cedar Waxwings very often so when I saw the courtship behavior of passing berries back and forth I had to take advantage of the opportunity. I came across them in the middle of the day when I normally don't take any photos due to the strong light but would otherwise not have been able to capture the moment.

Chukar

Chukars are a game bird from Asia which were introduced to the US in the late 1800's. I came across this one in a state natural area and it was the first time I'd ever seen one. It's in the partridge family of birds.

Eastern Meadowlark

One of my favorites, listening to the Meadowlarks in the spring. Meadowlarks are spring grassland nesters. I either find them hiding in tall grasses or perched on branches or posts while they sing for mates. They do have a rather sleek body but sometimes when singing they'll puff out their whole body and feathers.

Egret

The Great Egret remains white all year but has breeding plumage in the spring with long feathers flowing down the back past the tail. There are also photos of the Snowy Egret which is much smaller in size.

Green Heron

Adult and immature Green Heron I came across. Adults are 16-22 inches long and interestingly enough are NOT green. It took me awhile to identify these as it was the first time I saw them. The adult has orange legs which is part of the breeding plumage. I saw the immatures hunting in the same area approximately two months later and am assuming the adult had nested there in June.

Hawk Chicks

I believe these are Cooper's Hawk chicks though I can't be 100 percent certain. I saw the nest when they were close to fledging with half feather and half down. Within six days they were mostly feather and were busy preening all the down clumps out. Both fledged a week from the first photo.

Orioles - Baltimore Orioles

2011 Baltimore Orioles are now uploaded. This year we had a large migratory population and if you enjoy orioles this is a huge album! Males have an all black head and the immatures have black speckling as the color changes on their heads. The females are very difficult to tell apart from the Orchard Oriole females so they may be of either species.

Owls - Great Horned Owlet Nest #2

There is only one owlet in this nest and I started taking photos close to fledging time. I don't know if there was only one hatched or if one or two young were lost to any causes.
These photos were taken in 2015 at Hawthorn Hollow.

Owls - Great Horned Owlets

Two Great Horned Owlets which I've been lucky enough to regularly observe. I'll keep adding to the album as they grow, and hopefully be able to catch a photo or two of one of the adults.
After fledging the young owls are taking to some pretty high branches. Due to the distance the photos are not always the best, but in the interest of seeing their development I've kept adding updates to the album. They seem to be doing very well and the adult female is always somewhere in the area watching over them. Initially we could hear the cries of one or both as soon as we got out of the car, but as they are maturing they quieted down and we sometimes have to search awhile till we spot them. Adult size is 18 to 25" tall, and they have up to 500 pounds of pressure in their talons.

Owls - Short Eared Owls

Photos of a group of Short Eared Owls taken at Bong Recreation Area in Wisconsin. I was very pleased to see them hunting the area and have a chance to get some photos. Their size ranges from 13 to 17 inches long and they have a wingspan of 42 inches.

Sandhill Crane 2010

I'm hoping to keep adding and upgrading as I come across new opportunities to photograph these awesome cranes. The regular plumage of these birds is a gray blue feather but you will notice the rusty shading on all that I've photographed. Depending upon the region that they are in, the sandhills will preen iron rich mud into their feathers creating the rusty red shading. This really improves the camouflage in marsh and brush. This color will last all spring and summer till the feathers are molted in the fall. The cranes are 41/2 to 5 feet tall, the males usually the tallest, and weigh 10 to 14 pounds. When nesting the pair will take turns incubating the eggs.
We've been lucky to observe two pair on a regular basis, both in a marsh setting. The first pair are often in the open, feeding in the marsh late afternoon or early evening. See the separate album for photos of the nesting pair and hatched chicks.

Sandhill Crane 2011 to 2013

I love watching these huge birds and was very happy to find some come spring this year. The cranes are four and a half to five feet tall and have a six to seven foot wing span. I've added a couple of photos of them taking flight for interest. I've also added some surprising agressive behavior which we observed. That series would not be a high print quality but I found it to be quite an interesting exchange.

Sandhill Crane Nest and Colts 2010

We came across this nesting Sandhill Crane pair while out hiking in a marsh. Not wanting to disturb the cranes, we stayed back in the brush and only visited the area once a week. On Mother's Day we were thrilled to find the eggs had hatched and two chicks being taken care of by the parents.
