Dragonflies

Check back often for new updates and varieties. Photos are order of date taken so the newest will always be at the end of the albums.
I've become fascinated by these wonderful dragonflies. Each summer we seek out new varieties showing different colors, wing patterns, shapes and sizes. We've photographed 18 varieties so far. The majority we've found in SE Wisconsin with a few varieties found in northern Illinois.

Black Saddlebags

Black Saddlebags are a migratory dragonfly which are often seen in large groups after emerging in August and September before flying south. They spend most of the time patrolling in flight and perch infrequently. They are easy to identify by their "saddlebags" pattern seen underneath or in flight. Many photos here are juveniles and as an adult the dark areas will turn a very dark blue.

Calico Pennant

The Calico Pennants are gorgeous dragonflies. I've tried to provide different photos to show the wonderful patterns on their wings. All of these photos are males, denoted by the bright stigmas on the wings. The females are very gold rather than the red/orange of the male.

Common Pondhawk

I love the neon faces of Pondhawks. The males emerge the same green as the females. Juvenile males have a beautiful blend of baby blue and soft green. Females and newly emerged males are difficult to find as they camouflage perfectly and blend in to the grasses they perch on.

Eastern Amberwings

Eastern Amberwings are the 2nd smallest dragonfly at less than an inch long. Males have a solid amber wing with a red stigma and the females have a spotted wing with some clear colorless areas.

Four-spotted Skimmer

Fairly large dragonfly with a beautiful amber to black pattern. One of the most aggressive dragonflies, they will fight and devour other varieties. One of these I photographed is missing a wing, whether this resulted from fighting or perhaps from a bird I don't know.

Halloween Pennant

Beautiful wings spots and a reflective gold catch your eye when seeing these in the field. Males are a bit darker with orange/red reflecting from the wing veins along with a bright orange/red stigma. The females are gold and lack the dark stigma. We rarely find these dragonflies patrolling areas, they are usually perched waiting for prey. Many are quite high and are holding on tight so as not to be blown off the foliage. They don't seem very tolerant of approach and most will take off for a different perch.

Meadwhawk - Variegated

These were the first dragonflies of the season in April, and the first time I've seen them in three years of photographing dragonflies. These dragonflies have migrated into the area on warm spring winds and their progency will emerge in July and August, then migrate toward the Atlantic in the fall.

Mosaic Darners

I've categorized the darners contained in this album as "mosaic darners". They may be of several species which are extremely similar. In some the only noticeable difference is the degree of angle of the 1st thoracic stripe. Since I have nothing to compare this to I'm satisfied just leaving this as a broad category of mosaic darners.
