Hello Sly,

Here is the awnser to your question directly from the owner/builder of that 51 Merc.

The shiny part of the taillights are parts of the original grill for the -51 Merc . The lens is heated plastic form a indoor fourecent light with some red foil on it and bent over a piece of aluminum with the right shape. The opening was a mess since the original light demand a straigh up and down position I had to split the fin forward a bit inorder to get the body to cooperate with
the shiny part and thats why there is a rod welded in to mark the new line . My thought was that that was to be leaded in later but I never got around it.
