Day 00 - Friday, May 29th
Left for Phoenix about 6:00pm, after stopping for dinner in Walcott IA, we were on the road by 8:00pm. and drove through the night non-stop.

Day 01 - Saturday, May 30th
Our Route:
I-80 West to Des Moines.
35 South to Kansas City, may have taken a wrong exit at about 1 or 2am....without the Garmin, we would have never made it out of Kansas City!!
Finally found 70 West.
Followed 70 West to Topeka, 35/335 South to Witchita.
54 West out of Witchita, stopping in Meade for breakfast.
Continued on 54 West through the panhandle of Oklahoma, into Texas.
Towns in Texas, Texhoma (might have been in Oklahoma), Stratford, Conlen, Dalhart, Middle Water and Romero.
Made our way into New Mexico, stayed on 54 to 40 West at about Tucumcari.
Pulled over for the night in Moriarty.

Day 02 - Sunday, May 31st
Back on the road about 6:00am, made our way through New Mexico, stopping at the Continental Divide before we got to Arizona.
Once in Arizona, we stopped at the Petrified Forest. About halfway through the Petrefied Forest, we got hit by a HAIL STORM!! We went from about 70 degrees to 46 degrees in a matter of minutes! Started out as a rain storm, eventaully turning into large slush balls! Didnt get to see everything in the Petrified Forest needless to say!

Pulled into Mesa AZ about 4:30pm their time (6:30pm at home).
Had a wonderful dinner of bbq ribs and cheesy potatoes!

Day 03 - Monday, June 1st
Apache Trail, Apache Junction AZ.

First stopped at the Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum. Although the museum itself was closed for remolding, we were able to wander the grounds, seeing the Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel and Apacheland Movie Ranch Barn.

After leaving the museum, we went up the road a bit to Goldfield. Goldfield was an old mining town turned into a tourist attraction.

Went further up the trail to the Canyon Lake viewpoint overlooking the lake, then down past the lake itself.

Finally made it to Tortilla Flats, home of 6 people. At Tortilla Flats, the paved road ends and turns to gravel.

Turned around at this point and made our way back to Mesa for the day. Maybe try the entire Apache Trail tomorrow.

Day 04 - Tuesday, June 2nd
Today we did the opposite of the Apache Trail, going up through Superior, Miami and Globe.
Just before Globe, we turned off the highway to go to The Tonto National Monument, an indian ruin.

Went to T Flynn's house for the evening. Cooked brats and chicken breast on the grill and swam in the pool until about 10:00om....

Day 05 - Wednesday, June 3rd
Back in the pool this morning by 8:00am! Spent most of the day lounging around the pool. Met up with Renee and Tracy (cousins) for dinner at Cadilac Ranch in the Tempe Marketplace.

Day 06 - Thursday, June 4th
Off to Tucson today to Old Tucson Studios where we watched the Can-Can girls then a gunfight in the streets with Billy the Kid.

Day 07 - Friday, June 5th
Spent the day at the Phoenix Flea Market.

Day 08 - Saturday, June 6th
Spent the morning at the Mesa Market Place, Park and Swap.

Went to Midwestern Meats and picked up some Hot and Spicy Brats, some Pickly Pear beef jerky, some Spicy Pineapple beef jerky and jalepeno stuffed olives.

Butch cooked a fantastic dinner on the grill.

Day 09 - Sunday, June 7th
Spent the afternoon at the Grand Canyon. Walked along the South Rim about a mile and a half round trip. Drove 25 miles to Desert View and the Watchtower, what a fantastic view!!


Left the Grand Canyon, heading out on 64. We drove through the Navajo Indian Reservation, making a couple stops at the scenic views.

Picked up 89N to 160E through Tuba City, through Kayenta, to 191N into Utah.
191N took us through Bluff, and Blanding,and spent the night in Monticello.

Day 10 - Monday, June 8th
Woke up this morning and headed towards Moab. Along the way, we found a couple roadside attractions, Church Rock and Wilsons Arch. We missed the turn-off for Looking Glass Rock.

Ultimately we made it to Arches National Park! We were only able to go about halfway through to the Delicate Arch viewing area. What a beautiful park!

Got out of the park and back on 191N to 70E. Went all the way through Denver to Fort Morgan and spent the night.
The drive through Vail, CO was awesome! Surrounded by mountains, most of which had snow on them, waterfalls cascading down the mountain side, all the different lodges, ski lifts, etc. At one point, we hit about 11,000 elevation!!

Day 11 - Tuesday, June 9th
Spent the entire day driving home. Out of Fort Morgan on 76E to 80E through Nebraska to Omaha, to Des Moines IA, Iowa City then home!! We got home about 8:30pm

Along the way, we stopped in Gothenburg, NE at the Pony Express Station in Ehmen Park.
