Toombul Shire War Memorial - Mar 15, 2007
-
Today, SkillsTech Australia stage 1 stonemasonry apprentices reinstated ball finials on the 1921 Toombul Shire War Memorial at Nundah. Stage 4 apprentices had earlier made the finials on a stone lathe at Eagle Farm campus.
Nundah Northgate RSL stalwart and SkillsTech Australia plumbing teacher Max Shadlow has overseen the site's restoration from the beginning, and is "... delighted with the latest little instalment."
The stone for the finials was donated by QBuild Industries. Sourced from Queensland Parliament House restoration project, the Woogaroo Sandstone was quarried by Joshua Jeays in the grounds of Wolston Park from about 1860.
The stonemasonry section at Eagle Farm has a long connection with Ipswich stonemason Frank Williams' monument, associated with restoration work in Nundah historic cemetery from the 1980s. Students restored the rifle, and in 1995, added commemorative wreaths carved from stone.
When the memorial was re-dedicated in 2003 by Queensland Governor Michael Jeffries, students contributed the Ode to the Fallen on a lead-lettered marble plaque.
Working on public memorials, students gain valuable training experiences as well as building community connections. A high standard of workmanship is required, strengthening positive social attitude.
A future addition to the site will be the Milne Bay War Memorial. SkillsTech Australia stonemasonry teacher Michael Bulloch is currently sculpting a replica of the original coconut palm stump (near a Japanese mass grave at Milne Bay) on which was fixed a plaque commemorating the victory. The memorial will be unveiled in August this year. - Album was created 4 years 11 months ago and modified 4 years 5 months ago
