| | | - 51-2 First In on Early Morning Fire
-
- Aug 6, 2007
-
In the early morning hours on Monday, August 6th, Stations 51, 53, and 55 Ambulance were dispatched the area of Chestnut and Wayne Streets in the Boro for an apartment fire. Initial reports to Chester County Fire Board stated that a passerby saw flames coming from the rear of the building. More reports began to come in, stating heavy smoke and fire coming from 345 W. Chestnut Street, and that evacuations of the building were taking place.
Asst. 53 (McDonald) and Asst. 52 (Cotter) responded at 5:34 and were advised of the reports, and requested the “Working Fire Dispatch” bringing Station 52 for RIT, Medic 91, an additional Engine out of Station 39, PECO, and Fire Marshals. Engine 51-2 and Ladder 53 responded at 5:37. Asst. 53 and Engine 51-2 arrived on scene at 5:39, confirming the reports of heavy fire to the rear. Asst. 52 arrived and established the Chestnut Street Command.
Engine 51-2s crew stretched a 1 ¾” hand line to the front of the structure while Ladder 53 began ventilation and search. Once reaching the second floor, the fire attack team opened the door to the involved apartment and encountered heavy fire conditions. A quick knock down was made and the primary search was found to be negative.
Engine 51-1 arrived and went to the rear of the building, and stretched an attack line to the roof, while Engine 53 arrived and stretched an attack line to the second floor of the fire building via a second floor window to protect a neighboring apartment. A second line was pulled off of Engine 51-2 to protect the west side exposure.
Command placed the fire under control at 6:04 and requested an air bank to the scene to fill air cylinders bringing Rescue 25. Crews worked extensively to check all apartments for extention and began overhaul of the building. The fire was found to have burned through the floor of the involved apartment, and the State and County Fire Marshals arrived and began their investigation.
One civilian, the occupant of the apartment, was transported by 55 Ambulance with inhalation burns, as well as one firefighter with a minor laceration. Units began clearing the scene at 7:24, with remaining West Chester Units clearing at 8:30. The fire is under investigation by the State and County Fire Marshals and is believed to be electrical. Special thanks to Exton, East Brandywine, Edgemont, and Goshen fire companies for covering the WCFD first due.
