Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 1 - Arrival
Mar 18, 2007

What a day! With NY snow storm, plane delay, some flirting with the captain on Lena's part, stand by for the next flight available and no hope to make it on time for our cruise - we actually made it on time and joined the emergency drill on board! Whewww...

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 2 - Day at Sea/Gala Night #1
Mar 19, 2007

The day was great, starting with dance lessons on board, outside on the fresh air as a morning exercise. Buffet open almost 24/7. The weather wasn't the best, a bit rocky, but was still warm enough to get a tan. :) In the evening we had a Gala night - fun gown up dinner. A show to follow and a midnight surprise buffet, covered only in the best desserts ever! Ahhhh! Still thinking about them!

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 3 - San Juan Islands, Puerto Rico
Mar 20, 2007

This day began with morning exercise and a hearty breakfast while enjoying a sunshiny day on the deck, getting tanned and then a stop at an exciting island. In this case we only got to see the old town of San Juan Islands.
San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521 and is the oldest city in Puerto Rico.
In May 1898, United States Navy ships bombed the city during the Spanish-American War. On July 25, General Nelson A. Miles, with 3,300 soldiers, landed at Guánica and took over the island with little resistance. Spain ceded the island to the United States later the same year by the signing of the Treaty of Paris.
To finish our day we stopped by for some local food at a Cuban restaurant. It was delicious and so was the music that accompanied our meal!

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 4 - St. Thomas, Virgin Islands
Mar 21, 2007

We arrived at about 8 am on the island. We couldn't decide who wants to do what, so we split up. Zhenya and I went snorkeling for the first half a day. Then we took a "bus" tour around the city with a stop at the Koki beach. It was great! At some point we hit the rain, but tropical rains are warm, short and sturdy, soak you through right away. As we returned on the ship, there was Mr. Pizza game, a contest for guys. Like always, at the end of the day there was a wonderful dinner, a midnight buffet and a Disco late into the night.

Things to do in St. Thomas –is shopping. Which I haven’t done much since, there was no time, and you know guys… But I did manage to buy a necklace with Larimar. It’s a semi-precious stone, found only in the Caribbean. “Lari”, named after the promoter’s daughter Larissa, and “Mar”, the Spanish word for ocean. It looks like a reflection of both blue skies and blue green Caribbean water.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 5 - La Romana, Dominican Republic
Mar 22, 2007

Let's say we were around the block! We decided to see the real D.R., not the one built for the tourists to see, so we spent the day in La Romana. It's a poor, poor city. Children running on the streets asking for a dollar, teens are eager to give directions in exchange for money. The river is full of trash. Dogs look sickly. :( As for me, being a blonde, if I wasn't in a company of people, it would've been scary walking alone. I didn't know I was such a rare commodity. Oh, and a lot of people on the market have learned Russian, they were ready to "Торговаться до упора!" And then at the end of our day we spent a few hours on the beach. Aahh, I wish we were still there!

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 6 - Turks & Caicos, Grand Turks
Mar 23, 2007

It was a day of total relaxation. We got dropped off on an island that is only 6 miles long. Nothing there to do, except for sunbathe on the white sand and aquamarine water. It was the best beach I ever saw!
Back on the ship we had another Gala night, a show and then a midnight buffet with a masterpiece of art, where fruits, veggies, cheeses, fish products, and bread have been transformed into animals and other interesting creations.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 7 - Day at Sea/Toga Night
Mar 24, 2007

Last full day on the cruise was spent at sea. Finally we slept in, had a brunch at a restaurant, relaxed on the deck, enjoyed a nice ice cream and then by evening time changed into our Toga attire. It was a fuss to figure out how to wrap around in bed sheet, but finally with the help of a belt and hair clips we figured it out. It was fun seeing all the people in bed sheets. And then at the end of the evening there was a show by guests' performances. One of them was a Russian guest, who sang "Дорога Долгая."

Eastern Caribbean Cruise - Day 8 - Disembarktment/Ft. Lauderdale & Miami, Florida
Mar 25, 2007

Good bye, Costa Magica! We had our last breakfast on the ship. As you can see we were somber and not in a hurry to leave, cause we had a great time.
After we left the ship, we rented a 'Cow' - that's how we named our car. Actually Lena named it "Ugly," to the disappointed car rental dude. But it ended up being not a bad car. It was roomy, but it needed more power for my taste and a better gas paddle. We drove around Ft. Lauderdale a bit, and then took a little ferry cruise tour on the intercostal to check out the famous and the infamous houses of Florida. It stopped for a bit in a little jungle zoo, where we saw an alligator show and squirrel monkey and lots of colorful parrots. After the tour we drove to Miami to find our hotel. After we got all situated, we went in search of food, since it's no longer provided for us 24/7. We ended up in South Beach, the party town. It was just right up my alley. I guess not, for others... cause we got into a bit of a conflict of differences. It took us about at least an hour to find parking/find a place to eat with switching restaurants about 3 times and then actually sticking with it. And then of course some people hated the laud music, which was blaring all over South Beach from various venues. It was great, if you should ask me. But that's me.

Miami, Florida - Day 9 - Vizcaya Gardens
Mar 26, 2007

The morning started out slow... all cause Misha wanted to sleep in and then he realized he needed to do laundry, cause he traveled light and didn't have enough clothing! So, the three of us had to wonder around, killing time! Finally we got out and drove to Vizcaya Gardens. It is an Italian Renaissance-style villa and formal gardens built in 1916 as the winter residence of industrialist James Deering. You really feel like you're somewhere in Italy, walking there. Somewhere there we found a tiny sandwich stand, where almost everything was sold out, and whatever was left we bought for our brunch. We were really hungry by then - 2 pm. After, we drove around Miami in search of Venetian pool. But we never found it, with heavy traffic on the roads and driving on unknown streets, made it a bit time consuming to continue looking for the place. Instead we returned back and I had a swim in the ocean at 8 pm, the others were chickens... but if you can believe me, the water was still warm. It was actually warmer in the water then outside. It was really windy and if I stood in the water till my waist, the waves went up my neck. I didn't dare go further.
For dinner we drove to a Cuban Restaurant. Apparently, Cubans eat a lot more, cause their food portions are doubled or maybe even tripled of the American food. Cause all of us had more leftovers, then what we actually ate, and we were hungry when we came in.

Miami, Florida - Day 10 - Departure
Mar 27, 2007

Well our vacation came to an end. We woke up as early as we could.. around 09:30am, and went for a swim in the ocean, one last time before our departure. I mean how often do you get to swim in Washington in the Ocean and not freeze to death! We packed and drove to the airport. Does anyone know a TV show "Miami Vice," well that's exactly how it's been; crime is all over in Miami. There are just too many rich people, drugs, partying and alcohol and of course spring breakers, out of towners. In any case, police is everywhere, there were at least three different incidents. Not sure what they were, but they sure looked like murder. And the last one of all was right on our street, when we were leaving for aiport, one of the banks was being robbed. There was a stand off, one guy was arrested, two still inside and SWAT team was there, at least 5 blocks were blocked. Helicopters circuling around. It was a big deal. In a way I was glad to get out, but it would've been fun to actually party in Miami a little more.

Had the best time ever! 10 full days of learning history, geography and partying every night! Sleep wasn't an option! On a good night you can have 3-4 hrs of sleep. On some nights we spent 1-2 hrs of sleep. But it was great! I'd do it again!
