Previously I'd seen Josh Drye at Jack Sprat Cafe's open mic night, along with friend Wylie Hunter, where they each began honing their art publicly. Josh's band stretches into previously unexplored areas from mainstream rock. When they were once billed as "Vaudeville rock", I had to nod at the apt categorization; they fit that description as well as any other. As far as the band's name, I'm not sure which if any of the current names will stick. This show was billed as "Josh Drye and The Slightly Moist" (drye, moist). Usually I've seen "Josh Drye and The Revolution", though I think I've come across a 3rd name as well. Currently he has no website I can publicly pin down. CONTRADICTION: This group plays smooth, sophisticated, jazzy hiphop on a level that can stand ground with the best. I am constantly surprised to recall how young this group is. Reed has just recently returned to the music performance side of life (at least from what I've seen in Chapel Hill), and I, for one, am glad to know he's still cultivating this facet of his interests. Minus Sound Research (MSR) explores other artistic outlets of musicians in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. These are photos from the 3rd exhibition at Wootini Gallery in Carr Mill Mall, Carrboro NC. Opening night was October 10, 2008.

Can Joann, from Chapel Hill, was the week's concert at the Friday night show at Bynum NC's Front Porch series. Christmas at The Cradle, now in its 3rd year and organized by Trekky Records, began on an incredibly high note in it's first year. It has only gotten better each subsequent year. -Sorta' like Michael Phelps setting personal and world records, and then busting the roof off of them each subsequent time out.

I think what I love the most about this event, aside from being a Christmas show , is seeing the local favorite groups you know and love playing music -some remixed Christmas standards and new original Christmas music- quite different from their standard songs. I guess that means I've got a ton of video to post as well. ...Because I'm hoping you'll click through their entire show and see for yourself. I don't recall if I ever got last year's videos posted or not; -don't think I did, but no one asked me for them either, so... Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy these!

Proceeds from this show benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3 years now. –Just makes my Christmas even more joyous. Thanks, Trekky! In fact, an additional donation to MS (http://www.nationalmssociety.org) in honor of Trekky Records would be a wonderful way to say thanks to Trekky.

American Aquarium opened the show for Saturday night's THE CLUB IS OPEN FESTIVAL, a special Club event held in July 2008. It was a week-long event of great music at different venues in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, with proceeds going to Carolina for Kibera.

Shakori Hills is a beautiful pastoral venue in Chatham County which hosts of North Carolina's favorite music festivals in April and October each year.

These are photos from Fall 2006. They are shot with different cameras and multiple memory cards, so I have to get them in order. Therefore, all the photo-sequence numbers will change. Originally posted these in a private setting til I could get them in order, but i keep getting delayed. So here's a tiny bit of the festival, all from the Friday shows. TONS more, unposted still, from other days and from other Shakori Hills festivals. TONS.

Tyler's BBQ and Bluegrass Festival 2005 was my first time, and I think it was the 2nd year they'd held it. Despite gloomy skies, there was no rain, and the cloud cover kept temperatures in the 80's. It began (and ended, I think) with Woodwork Roadshow; who have moved their base from Chapel Hill to Columbia SC/Wilmington NC/Nashville TN, but check www.myspace.com/woodworkroadshow for incredible music. Also featured prominently was Leroy Savage Group, Ryan Cavanaugh (www.myspace.com/banjoryan), Tony Williamson, and Big Fat Gap (www.myspace.com/bigfatgap). Photos were with an old Vivitar digital.

Scarlet Rider opened my night at Local 506 in Chapel Hill. From there, I headed to Jack Sprat Cafe to catch the last bit of Andrew Weather's Pacific Before Tiger with his friend and guest guitarist Joe Mazzitelli. *SONS ended this photo posting with their first show since waytoolong back on 2007.

When Cousins Marry played an early show at The Cave, Chapel Hill NC. Many of these musicians have been around Chapel Hill for a while pursuing careers with UNC and such, and have played in different music projects off and on. But the name of this group may be the best of any name they've had. And according to their website (http://www.whencousinsmarry.com) they've been around since 1981. So they're O-L-D. [wink]

Stone Fox was long-time Chapel Hill musician Johnny Dzubak's band, 2006-2007, before he left North Carolina. These photos were from a show at Local 506.

The Pneurotics (Chapel Hill) held a PACKED HOUSE cd party to celebrate the release of their first cd, Forty. Great times at Local 506, complete with a no-holds-barred barbecue dinner buffet for guests, along with a free cd! The club was full and lights were a bit dim (varied by group) to hold down the heat. Most of my photos were dark in order to reduce the blurriness, or blurry in order to compensate for reduced light, given my current equipment, so I wasn't going to post them. But I have no pride [grin], so when Mimi asked me to post anyway, I couldn't decline since I'd been enjoying them all to myself despite the low quality. I hope you will too!

Bit by bit, I'll get the other groups' photos up, probably in a tandem folder due to volume of photos in one folder. The Proclivities, ...Hammer No More the Fingers, ...and Red Collar are yet to come! But since it was The Pneurotics' night, their's go up first. Apex NC is such a charming community-now-city who hasn't forgotten the charm of small-town Southern life. They rejuvenated an old downtown, commercial building into the beautiful Halle Cultural Arts Center. One of the inaugural events was a concert by the Apex/Chapel Hill group, EASY COMPANY, led by 17-yr.old Gabe Nardin. Outstanding concert! Mine will be the wobbley ones since I shoot stills at the same time with a heavy camera in the other hand, on manual settings. I was also walking backwards and gracefully down the side aisle, bumping into 4-ft trashcans. )

UNC-CH's national award-winning student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel has a weekly feature, called Diversions, of what's going on around campus and Chapel Hill. The staff of Diversions hosted a class-A rock party to close out the academic year. Local 506 Live Music Club on W. Franklin Street was the host venue. Playing were The Graves of Fairmont, The Future Kings of Nowhere, and Hammer No More the Fingers. After the Diversions party/show are photos from Jack Sprat Cafe in the 100 block of E. Franklin Street, where The Dirty Little Heaters capped off the night in hotrock.

Cadence, a female a cappella ensemble, performed a Spring concert at UNC's Hanes Art Center. Two guest groups also performed: NCSU's Grains of Time, and UNC's Psalm 100.

Flo held his Junior guitar recital on UNC campus, Chapel Hill NC on a cool, serene Spring day in historic Person Hall. His parents, instructor, and several friends and fellow students attended. You can occasionally find Flo playing at an open mic at downtown Jack Sprat Cafe and Bar where he works part time. You'll know him by his engaging personality and warm smile.

Local 506 Live Music Club, Chapel Hill NC, hosted the debut of The Lonesome Departed, a 7-piece group who list themselves as Country / Alternative / Folk Rock. I'd say heavy on the country. Thomas Moorefield's pedal steel is awesome, and for me, his sound is the pivotal kingpin for this group. He also plays a defining sound with the next group, John Dixon's Ten Penny, who seems to enjoy flying under the radar. -One of my favorite groups, Ten Penny has incredible potential to PACK shows, yet still very few have seen them.

Next up was a stop by Blue Horn Lounge to see friends playing at open mic. -Such a great, TINY venue!

Black Skies roiled over Cat's Cradle and man did we need that rain. Hot rain. A soaker. Life stuff. Goosebumps good.

They did have help to be sure. In fact, the storm began rolling in when Colossus took the stage (www.myspace.com/thecolossuswillcrushyou . ha. too late. but we know that now.), ripped and shredded wood, but left rafters intact for Hazerai (www.myspace.com/hazerai ). We were thrown about a bit, bruised, and were drenched. We knew what lay ahead, but had no way of knowing the 3rd phase was a double whammy drummm affair; thunderous sounds. Caltrop. (www.myspace.com/caltropband ). Sounds like a romp in the pasture. Or like a cousin of The Cowsills. Huhh, yeh. They held us underwater and let up up only long enough to gasp for air before throwing us underwater again. [Have you heard Caltrop from beneath the waves?] Savage duality. -Mind plays tricks on you. It goes quiet for a bit, like the eye of a hurricane passing over, but without birds and blue skies.

That's when the blackest of Black Skies roll in to finish you off. Michelle looks innocent like any siren. Adam? Well at least he didn't take his shirt off. He just beat you to a blissful end without much more than breaking a sweat. Kevin? Oooh, stay away from him. He's the wily one who orchestrates the storm and then sings about it. No, singing sounds too lyrical. He screams. We all screamed back. And then we slept. And we dreammmed.

Colossus took the stage (www.myspace.com/thecolossuswillcrushyou . ha. too late. but we know that now.), ripped and shredded wood, but left rafters intact for Hazerai (www.myspace.com/hazerai ). We were thrown about a bit, bruised, and were drenched. We knew what lay ahead, but had no way of knowing the 3rd phase was a double whammy drummm affair; thunderous sounds. Caltrop. (www.myspace.com/caltropband ). Sounds like a romp in the pasture. Or like a cousin of The Cowsills. Huhh, yeh. They held us underwater and let up up only long enough to gasp for air before throwing us underwater again. [Have you heard Caltrop from beneath the waves?] Savage duality. -Mind plays tricks on you. It goes quiet for a bit, like the eye of a hurricane passing over, but without birds and blue skies.

That's when the blackest of Black Skies roll in to finish you off. Michelle looks innocent like any siren. Adam? Well at least he didn't take his shirt off. He just beat you to a blissful end without much more than breaking a sweat. Kevin? Oooh, stay away from him. He's the wily one who orchestrates the storm and then sings about it. No, singing sounds too lyrical. He screams. We all screamed back. And then we slept. And we dreammmed.

Spencer Scholes, backed by David Futrelle (sp?) and Aaron (last name?), played an early show at The Cave on Chapel Hill's west end of Franklin Street. Spencer is new to the area; welcome! I left his show to catch Alex Wilkins of Tripp playing a nice solo show on the other end of Franklin Street. -Both were nice post-Thanksgiving desserts.
