Canada goose goslings are perhaps the cutest
of goslings! When they are babies they are
yellow with cute little brown squares on them.
They are adorable when little and then gorgeous
when grown. Canada geese are some of the
quickest growing goslings. A female Canada
goose will lay a clutch of 2 to 6 eggs. The father(
gander)protects the nest with his life. He stands
guard and any unwanted visitor is in for a
surprise! His wings are powerful, and are capable
of breaking your arm. His beak is very strong,
and can grip your eyes. The female sits on the
eggs through rain and shine. She only gets up
when she is EXTREMELY thirsty. After about
28 days the eggs hatch into those cute little
fuzz balls! It takes about a day for the babies to
emerge themselves out of the eggs, and once they
are out the mom hovers over them until they are
dry. Then, they follow mom and dad into the water.
Goslings don't ALWAYS go in a straight line, I
have seen dad up front with mom right behind
and THEN the goslings, and vise versa, and I have
seen the goslings up front and mom and dad
following. The babies eat grass, and they learn
what their favorite grass is quickly! Dad tends
to like to chase geese off that get too close. sometimes when two pairs with babies meet a
huge fight breaks out, and all of the goslings
are in danger, so the parents generally try to
avoid that. On occasion two pairs with babies
join together to where there are 4 parents and
lots of babies, these are called "clutches".
They do this so that there is more protection
on the behalf of all the babies. The babies grow quickly and can weigh as much as 7 pounds
at just 8 weeks of age. When the babies are
half grown the parents molt and are unable
to fly for about one month. The parents grow
new flight feathers by late summer, in time
to teach the youngsters how to fly. Canada
geese use not only body movement to
communicate with one another; studies have
shown that they also use at least 10 different
sounds (vocalizations) Such communication
can be seen before a family is about to take
flight. The male goose tosses his head up and
down and makes long, deep honking sounds
saying it's time to go. While the male typically
says when, the female lifts off first to lead the
way. The male follows behind and guards the
rear. In Canada goose communities, geese with
large families form the top of the social structure, followed by smaller families, then by mated
pairs, then single adults and yearlings. Canada
geese like feed during the early morning and
late afternoon. They are grazers and eat all
kinds of of plants such as marsh grass, berries,
sprouting wheat, bulrush, glasswort, salt grass,
brome, clover, salt brush, cattails, not to mention
turf grass. Geese are often seen with their heads
underwater and tails in the air, at these times
they are usually feeding on tubers, roots,
leaves, seeds, widgeon grass, algae and various
pond weeds. When feeding like this , many
geese swallow lead shot left behind by hunters'
guns. Geese poisoned by lead die a slow and
painful death. The diet of geese that live in
coastal areas can also include mollusks and small
crustaceans. In the fall and winter, geese sometimes
eat leftover grain that remains in farmers' fields,
and they LOVE corn! Canada geese are the
best of geese, they make great pets and bond to
whoever or whatever will take of them. They
are the bestgeese , and I love them all!
