Greetings from mid-west Michigan! I raise those fancy, fluffy, fantasies, Sebastopol geese. I have found this breed of geese to be very intelligent, people loving and charming additions to our farm. I also raise ripple, blue, self-blue, cream and chocolate Muscovies from show bloodlines and large fowl, And blue-green egg laying, black and blue Ameraucana chickens from show bloodlines. You can email me via "The Waterfowl Meeting Place Forum" for information on stock for sale or just to chat. I'd love to hear from you. Warm Regards, Vicky (AKA Blue Egg Girl)

-
My real name is Karen, live alone but have a boyfriend, two cats, share 30+ ducks with my neighbors, more ducklings on the way, and other wildlife up the valley (no lions!!). I chose the name Brook for using on the message board coz the valley I live in is the Brook Valley, end of the road and into native bush. Nelson is at the top of the South Island of New Zealand and has a dry warm climate with frosts in the winter. Most of the early ducklings didn't survive the weather but the new broods are doing well (unless the mother ducks practiced with the first broods and are now more experienced).
All my ducks are called "Duck,Duck" said in a high squeaky voice like "Puss,Puss" except "Duck" said in a low stern voice "One Brain, Two Ducks" & "Henrietta", broken leg, victim of vicious gang rape, two weeks recovery in the safety of an old rabbit hutch

PROFILE:
SEPT 2005 UPDATE: It is me, Cheryl.. formally Cheeseymomma....now DuckyChickenLady. I just came out of a horrible summer...no ducks left, no chickens (until a few days ago)..no geese...no goat. We sold EVERYTHING. We were going to be moving, & after 3 flopped offers ...we have decided to stay! I am waiting till the spring to get some eggs to hatch out some ducks, & geese...& maybe more chickens.
here is a pic of the first additions to our new fowl family. These are Wyandottes. I got 3 hens & a rooster a week ago..they are 12 weeks old & very pretty.
HISTORY: MARCH 2003
CHERYL BAXTER AKA: CHEESEMOMMA/DUCKYCHICKENLADY
Hello, my name is Cheryl Baxter I live near a rural town called Pakenham in Ontario, Canada. I just turned 33..stay at home mom to 11yo- Amanda, 9 year old- Joshua, 7 yo- Jeremy, 4&1/2 yo-Jamie-Lynn & just turned 3 yo- Noah. The reason my e-mail is cheeseymomma@aol.com is because we have goats (2 does & 1 buck,alpine-boer cross) & I make goatsmilk cheese. (not so much since the ducks came into my life though!!!)
I have 11 ducks.
3 Adult Pekins..Jake, Tinkerbell & Lucky
2 pairs of Rouens..Chap & Puddles, Chuck & Maybel
2 Muscovies ..Tarzan&Jane,
& a new pair of grey calls ..Pebbles & BamBam.
(& as of May 5th 2003, we will have a pair of penciled runners..DiDi & Nike)
Oh yeah. I am the one with "Stevie" the blind duck. Pretty sure she is a "she".
They are so much fun & they keep me busy aside all the other "stuff" I do! We have quite the big pond on 15 acres of land. Which I now, no longer use due to the mink & fox deaths to a lot of my flock!
We also have Silkies (chickens & roosters), egg-layer chickens & chicks, meat chicks & 1 rooster, Guy. 3 dogs & 2 barn cats (Barney..original eh?) (& Meeko..who came into our lives Summer, 2002.)
My sweet man's name is Peter & we are sooooo blessed for all that God has given us!! I have another e-mail addy noahsarkunltd@aol.com incase anyone cares. We have lived in the country for 3 years now after being "suburban" people for so long & loving it! Love this site, thanks for being here to help with our pets! formally Cheeseymomma....now DuckyChickenLady. Website: http://www.picturetrail.com/marlipe Instructions for Pond Pallets for the safety of geese and ducks on a pond.
Why bother with docks for ducks?? We have a beautiful pond and enjoy having ducks living on the pond. We prefer not to pen our ducks but, unfortunately, we have many predators. The worst are bobcats, dogs, and coyotes but fox and even raccoons can cause problems for ducks. So we need to make sure our ducks spend the nights away from shore.
To do this, we made them some 'sleeping docks' where they can sit and sleep throughout the night. They are very safe on these docks as most of the predators don't want to swim and even when they swim, ducks are much better swimmers and able to get away easily (owls may cause problems in some areas - we have owls here but they don't bother our grown ducks at all). Wild geese, wild ducks, and a great blue heron also enjoy sleeping on these pallets. geese and ducks on a pond.

Album sites: http://www.picturetrail.com/marlipe
Record of Little Joe's injury, 2001 Little Joe, my pekin drake, suffered a bad injury to his right foot in August 2001. We believe he may have gotten tangled in some barbed wire. Oddly enough, he cut the same foot about 14 months earlier. This is a photo record of his progress. We gave him daily antibiotic injections for 6 weeks and bandaged his foot every couple of days. Little Joe is a very nice duck and is leader of his flock. He "leads" his main girlfriend, Picabu (Peekaboo) Duck, his other girlfriend, Blue, and his male pal, Greenie. (Muskerman Duck also lives here but is not a member of the gang, preferring his independence.) We hope this story will have a happy ending Record of Little Joe's injury, 2001 Little Joe, my pekin drake, suffered a bad injury to his right foot in August 2001. Canada goose goslings are perhaps the cutest of goslings! When they are babies they are yellow with cute little brown squares on them. They are adorable when little and then gorgeous when grown. Canada geese are some of the quickest growing goslings. A female Canada goose will lay a clutch of 2 to 6 eggs. The father( gander)protects the nest with his life. He stands guard and any unwanted visitor is in for a surprise! His wings are powerful, and are capable of breaking your arm. His beak is very strong, and can grip your eyes. The female sits on the eggs through rain and shine. She only gets up when she is EXTREMELY thirsty. After about 28 days the eggs hatch into those cute little fuzz balls! It takes about a day for the babies to emerge themselves out of the eggs, and once they are out the mom hovers over them until they are dry. Then, they follow mom and dad into the water. Goslings don't ALWAYS go in a straight line, I have seen dad up front with mom right behind and THEN the goslings, and vise versa, and I have seen the goslings up front and mom and dad following. The babies eat grass, and they learn what their favorite grass is quickly! Dad tends to like to chase geese off that get too close. sometimes when two pairs with babies meet a huge fight breaks out, and all of the goslings are in danger, so the parents generally try to avoid that. On occasion two pairs with babies join together to where there are 4 parents and lots of babies, these are called "clutches". They do this so that there is more protection on the behalf of all the babies. The babies grow quickly and can weigh as much as 7 pounds at just 8 weeks of age. When the babies are half grown the parents molt and are unable to fly for about one month. The parents grow new flight feathers by late summer, in time to teach the youngsters how to fly. Canada geese use not only body movement to communicate with one another; studies have shown that they also use at least 10 different sounds (vocalizations) Such communication can be seen before a family is about to take flight. The male goose tosses his head up and down and makes long, deep honking sounds saying it's time to go. While the male typically says when, the female lifts off first to lead the way. The male follows behind and guards the rear. In Canada goose communities, geese with large families form the top of the social structure, followed by smaller families, then by mated pairs, then single adults and yearlings. Canada geese like feed during the early morning and late afternoon. They are grazers and eat all kinds of of plants such as marsh grass, berries, sprouting wheat, bulrush, glasswort, salt grass, brome, clover, salt brush, cattails, not to mention turf grass. Geese are often seen with their heads underwater and tails in the air, at these times they are usually feeding on tubers, roots, leaves, seeds, widgeon grass, algae and various pond weeds. When feeding like this , many geese swallow lead shot left behind by hunters' guns. Geese poisoned by lead die a slow and painful death. The diet of geese that live in coastal areas can also include mollusks and small crustaceans. In the fall and winter, geese sometimes eat leftover grain that remains in farmers' fields, and they LOVE corn! Canada geese are the best of geese, they make great pets and bond to whoever or whatever will take of them. They are the bestgeese , and I love them all! SAVE THE CANADA GEESE!

Wed, 22 Jun 2005 From: "Williams, Heather K" Hi my name is Heather and I've a first grade teacher in Houston. The past three years I hatched chicken eggs as a class project and this year I chose ducks. Out of 21 eggs I only had one hatch but we still won first place at the HISD Science Fair. Quack-Quack aka Quackers is 7 weeks old today and adorable. She is a Khaki Campbell duck and is supposed to be a good egg layer. She is soooooo sweet and loves people the problem is she is alone I only have one. I don't have a yard and am not going to be able to keep her much longer. I don't think she would survive being dropped at some pond or lake as she is very used to humans. I adore her and was wondering if you might have any suggestions on a good, safe home for her? Please let me know, Heather : ) Quack-Quacks mom From: "Williams, Heather K" Hi my name is Heather and I've a first grade teacher in Houston. We moved here in June, there is a small lake in the backyard. We had 1 adult male and the female w/babies. We are in Florida and I'm afraid some haven't lasted through these storms. There are two ma ma ducks now (since we returned from the last evacuation) and it seems they have joined there little families together! So, at the moment there are 2 adult females and 5 teenagers, 2 of the teenagers are younger. I haven't seen the Male and I miss him! I love them and they eat mosquito's and stuff. Thanks for the tip on feeding them. We only eat whole grain wheat bread ourselves, so that's what they are fed when we give them bread. Mostly they eat the squirrel food, it's sunflower seeds, corn, & oats. ma ducks now (since we returned from the last evacuation) and it seems they have joined there little families together! The show was ok - I had fun spending the afternoon with Katy but the show was pretty small. I heard that AI kept alot of people away this year. I was also shocked by the condition some of the birds were in - most of the ducks and geese were in pretty bad shape. The chickens looked good especially the bantys they appeared in good health and most were very beautiful. Most of theducks had crusty eyes - dirty and torn feathers some even had wounds that were bleeding. Very sad. I told Katy if me, her and Tracy had taken our birds we would have owned that show! LOL But it was a good experience. Katy fell in love with a little grey call duck with crusty eyes who was just aborable. She begged the owner but he woudn't sell her. (jerk) I took alot of pictures
Lori summed up the show pretty well...I did like both the chocolate and the black runners...the blue drake was a little scrufty...in his defense, maybe it's his molt...but Lori is right---there sure could have been some better attention payed to the way these birds were prepared for the show...I mean, I'm no expert, but even a dummy like me can tell that it's obvious these birds were not well groomed, and in a few cases, not even well cared for. I WANT THAT CALL DUCK!! big meanie wouldn't sell her!!!
If I had my way I would have taken every one of those birds home with me! Upon close examination of the little call it appeared that it was injured at one point and the eye had scabbed over - at least that's what the owner thought.
I was just loving this little girl-quacking her head off...very out spoken compared to her two counterparts. But the eye was actually deformed in some way. The eyelid looks to have grown half over the eye, but upon closer examination with the owner holding her, she did not appear to have any puss or crustiness in the eye. Just looks like a birth defect or an injury from younger that had healed the best it could. Tracy had a duck like that which she just sold a few weeks ago-Henrietta-and her eye problem was from the hatch...never healed right. this year. Our trip to California: We left AZ Tues. morning to make the 6 hour drive to LA. Stopped in Palm Springs to have lunch with the girls at Starbucks, and visit with everyone..had a great time.
Taking the girls into the Burbank Hilton was no problem as they have had a lot of unusual guests. Alan took some video, but the show wanted to see if we had anything they could use, so they now have the tape...I'll probably get it back. They take elevators, etc. in stride and impressed everyone with their poise and behavior. They loved the big bed....
We ordered room service for dinner, and I couldn't figure out why the waiter wasn't coming in the room until he asked, "Are those real??" I forgot all about the geese on the bed! We had a quiet evening watching TV and went to bed. So nice to have a bed big enough for all of us.
Wed. we all went strolling on Rodeo Drive and had lunch. Again we chose to take the camcorder instead of the camera so have no pics now. However, people literally stopped traffic to take pics out of the car windows. We then drove out to Ojai to visit Lucy goose's real mother and father. The scenery out there is incredible! I have been talking and writing to them for 3 years so it was wonderful to be able to meet...they are lovely people. They were disappointed that I didn't bring Lucy (she had to stay home with a babysitter as she was very busy laying eggs!), but had a good time with my girls.
Next morning, Thurs., we got ready to go to the studio at 12:45 p.m. By the way, the kids got used to taking a bath in the big bathtub right away and enjoyed other benefits of the bathroom...
Now, for the important stuff that was going on all this time. I started getting calls from the producer, Jolie, Monday voicing concerns about the girls wearing dresses. Jay Leno doesn't approve of animal wearing clothes. I knew this, but had answers ready for him. The dresses serve several very practical purposes. (1) They have worn them whenever they have gone out in public, so when they get dressed, they know what is coming..petting, etc. (2) Most people are afraid of geese, but get over it very quickly when they see the dresses. (3) People are much more likely to be careless and even mean to undressed farm or park ducks and geese. They are safer with the dresses on. Well, these discussions went on at the rate of 5 or 6 calls a day. She would talk to me, then go to the executive producers and come back with more suggestions...like they shouldn't wear their diapers! I told her they would NOT go on without them. Then she said the geese could wear clothes, but the duck should go out without anything on and I could diaper her on stage. Not too bad an idea, but she wanted Cricket to sit on Jay's shoulder and hopefully poop on him before I got her changed. They were really pushing to have a bird poop on stage for a laugh. I allowed as how I had spent 10 years perfecting a diaper and a system for geese to live inside cleanly, and there would be no mess! She said the audience should see the duck poop so they would know why a diaper was needed. I figured everyone in the world knows that ducks poop. The upshot of all of this was, I made it absolutely clear that I would not be involved in "bathroom" humor, and would not appear on the show with undiapered birds..period. They were having a final meeting at 12:00, so I didn't even know while we were in the limo whether I would go on or not. You can't see too well in the pic, but it is a stretch limo with a long sofa, back seat and great bar.
I was so relieved when we got to the studio and Jolie told me they had decided to let the girls go on fully clothed! It was a bit of a thrill to see my name on the dressing room door..
They gave us the card off the door to keep.
Then we started rehearsal. Jay wasn't there, but they were figuring out what they were going to do and I wanted to have the girls get used to set. They first wanted them to stand on a little bench and eat the lettuce off the table, but it was too narrow and slick and Mimi freaked..flew all over the place! I ran through undressing and dressing Cricket to show how the diaper worked, and we were going to have Maggie stand on the desk and hug Jay. She also showed me a list of questions Jay might ask. I had Alan lead the birds onto the stage and over to the sofa a couple of times so they would know where to go. Oh, Alan. I begged them from the first to have Alan go on with me as Mimi is so much more comfortable with him there, and we may have even taken Lucy if he were to be there, but they said they just wanted me.
Back to the dressing room to wait for a couple of hours. Not too uncomfortable as you will see..
The amount of food and drink was amazing..what a waste! A huge plate of sandwiches, cookies, fruit, vegetables, soft drinks and coffee. Of course, during this time everyone was going by the door..amazed at the behavior of the geese and duck. Maggie gave many hugs!
I popped out a few times to have a cigarette in the parking lot where Jay's Stanley Steamer, that he drove to work, was parked. They said he was the only "star" who drives himself to work.
Finally, I got dressed and went to have my make-up and hair done. They really didn't change me a lot, but the tweaking helped immensely. They were very nice.
About a half hour before the show, they wheeled around a cart with fancy beers and about every alcoholic beverage you could want. I had a little beer before I went on just to take the edge off. Actually, I was very relaxed as soon as I knew the girls could be dressed. I've never had stage fright. Thank goodness, I did watch the most of the show on the monitor so I knew about the RV/tires bit with Stallone. I never got to SEE Stallone! He was in the dressing room next to me, but only came out for a few minutes when I wasn't there. Alan said he wasn't rude, but was obviously very preoccupied. He did his bit and left immediately.
They were a little concerned about the bird's reaction to the loud music...very, very loud and playing while were standing in the wings right next to the orchestra. Mimi was a bit nervous at first (she is a worry wort), but had a chance to get used to it before she went on. Except for giving the birds lettuce and showing Lucy's egg, Jay changed everything! I was NOT told that Gilbert Godfried was coming out to yell, "Aflac!" at them. As you saw, it was not a problem as they seem to have forgotten that all my girls have grown up at the Renaissance Festivals. They have seen and heard everything! But, I do think they were trying to start the birds flying or screaming. I know some of the audience probably thought they were drugged or something, but they are really just coooool. The one thing they cut off of the tape was at the very end. I shook hands with Jay, set Maggie on the floor, set Cricket down and walked off. Mimi did exactly what I expected her to do...she flew off the sofa after me! I so wish they had shown that. I also wish I could have seen Jay's face when she did it! In any case, I know we didn't give them what they wanted...funny or disgusting chaos. Too bad.
As we walked back to the dressing room, Gilbert Godfried very quietly followed us. It took a minute for Alan to realize he was standing in the doorway. We invited him in, Maggie gave him a hug, and I mentioned that Mimi liked a lap. Well, I didn't get lap out of my mouth before he was sitting on the sofa.
Oh, forgot to mention, the battery on our camera ran out soon after we got there. A producer came in and took polaroids of Gilbert.
Alan was really pleased with the pic of he, Gilbert and Cricket. I can't say enough about what a very quiet, sweet man he is when he is not performing...a complete opposite!
We went back on stage to have our picture taken with Jay.. they will send that. I was given a hooded, zippered sweatshirt with The Tonight Show logo embroidered on it, and a thank you card from Jay. Oh, a couple of things I forgot to mention: I tried to get Jay to put the lettuce plate away so Maggie could hug him, but... He had come to the dressing room before the show and gotten a hug.
Well..that's about it. Very interesting time.

Love, Gabriel
My duck is a Pekin duck her name is Gabriel. I got her when she was 2 days old, her birthday is April 12th 1999. She was so tiny when I got her, I had never seen a baby duck in person before. We had no idea how to care for her, we had to learn quick because baby ducks grow so fast! When we got her she was so small and she didn't want to be alone at all, I had to carry her 24 hours a day. She spent a lot of time in my bathrobe pocket. She would go to bed at 10:00pm and wake up at 3:00am! I was so tired, baby ducks are a lot of work. http://mykapasa.tripod.com/Gabriel/MyGabrielpage2.html

The photos were taken on the 11th August, so the babies were hatched around four weeks before that. The largest duckling was five weeks old at that stage, and it shows in his size! Cayuga ducklings are born black all over, with black bills and feet. Some of them will have a light to medium degree of 'frosting' on their chests. As they mature, if the frosting is quite pronounced as a baby, it will eventually end up being white feathers, a fault if you want to show your Cayugas. Pure all black ducklings will end up pure black ducks, with no white chest or neck feathers. In the photo of the ducklings in the brooder box, you can plainly see the frosting on the duckling in the front of the photo. He/she now has white feathers sprouting on the neck area, so is classed as a cull, not good enough to show or breed from. ducklings are born black all over, with black bills and feet. We saw our neighbor not taking care of his male goose, so my husband bought him and brought him home. Boy was he a noisy boy. I guess it was because he did not have a mate. We kept him pinned up for a year or so. He was a good watch goose because he alerted us every time something entered our property. He also had a good time with our dogs. He was like an alarm. Every time a siren would go off the goose let us know and the dogs would howl and bark. We had a great time with this goose all year long.
A week ago my husband decided he would let the goose free to roam the yard, so we closed the front gate and turned him loose. Everything was going good until my husband came inside the house. The goose roamed all around the house calling him and looking for him. After we retired for the night the goose settled down. Sometime in the early morning something got after the goose and tried to kill him. When my husband got up he was so angry that something tried to hurt the goose that he pinned him up again. His beak was the majority of the damage and he had blood all down his chest area. My husband cleaned him up (you see this goose lets my husband pet him on his head and chest) and watched him all day for any signs of further damage.
A few days later, God sent a person to help our goose. This man and my husband became friends. The man had a lonely female goose that was the very same kind as our goose. The man was feeling sorry that his goose had no mate, so he told my husband that he would give the female to him if he could ever catch her. Last night the man called rather late. My husband asked if he wanted him to come and get her...and the man told him that the female goose was not happy in the cage that she was in. My husaband jumped in his truck, got the goose, and brought her back home.
Our goose was so happy when my husband put her in the pen. He said they looked like they already knew each other. Every thing was going great. They were so happy to see each other and happy to have a mate again. My husband said it was love at first sight for the two of them.
Sometime during the morning my husband could not sleep very well, so he got up to check on the geese. He saw that all was ok and went back to bed. At 7:00 or just before, he got up again. Not knowing why, he looked out at the pen to see if all was still ok...but he only saw one goose. He got upset and went outside to check closer. He did not see the female. We have cows too and he has an electric wire to keep them in their place. As he got closer to the pen he saw the female had gotten out of her pen and fell on the electric wire. At this point 2,000 volts were going through this goose. No telling how long she had been on that wire. My husband's heart sank to his knees. He quickly unplugged the wire and went to the goose. His first instincts were to start CPR. Yes, I sadi CPR. On a goose???? My husband thought about how long "Goosey" had waited for a mate, so he began to try what he knew he should do. My husband said it seemed like 15 minutes of working on this poor little goose with no heartbeat at all. He was about to give up and finally she opened her little eyes. My husband was so excited that he took both of them to the pond and turned them loose.
You are probably wondering why he had not released them to the pond before now. Well, we both worried that the female goose would remember where she had come from and would fly back if we put her on the pond. That is why my husband put her in the pen first. We wanted her to get used to Goosey first and hoped that she would fall in love and stay with him. This is a very true story and I am anxious for you to print it on your web site.
I hope no one ever has to go through this kind of horror with their geese. Goosey is so attached to my husband that it is pitiful. I guess my husband was so hopeful that Goosey would have a mate that he decided to try everything he could to get the female goose to survive. Never give up on your animals (or fowl). God only loans them to us for a short time. Enjoy your friends of nature!!!! year or so. He was a good watch goose because he alerted us every time something entered our property. We live on 6 acres in northeastern Ohio. We got our first ducks when four wandered into our yard from who knows where. We've been hooked ever since. Right now we have only ducks, but will be adding geese this spring. geese this spring. - photos: 29 (3 MB)

Devera & Bruce Morgan; Royse City, Texas - Ducks and Chickens
ANATIDA / Terra Copia (Devera Morgan) As of July 2002 Devera sold most her flock
Business: Terra Copia (R) Location: Royse City, Hunt Co, Texas (about 30 miles east of Dallas)
I am a 33 yr old Stay-home/homeschooling Mom to Gabriel age 4, and Elizabeth 14 months. Hubby, also 33, is a custom software developer in Dallas. I am trying to get our homestead and retail store off the ground so that hubby can come home and take over childcare duties. <haha>
Currently I have the following chickens & ducks, as well as 2 young pigmy goats that we will breed when they are of age.
Ducks:
White Pekin
Buff Duck
A beauty I hatched and have no idea what he is :-)
Lost my Blue Swede hen in the last 2 weeks :(
Chickens:
RIRs Light Brahmas Black Australorp Buff Orpingtons White Rocks
And I'm trying my hand at creating an Americana(hen)/Barred Rock(roo) mix. Since my Brahma chicks keep dying I'm also currently trying to mix my Light Brahma(hen) with my Black Australorp(roo)
I will also be breeding Great Danes soon. Anyone close with a Champion Sire? She is a gorgeous harliquin and AKC purebred As of July 2002 Devera sold most her flock
