June 2007: Chimney Peak BLM Backcountry Byway

Could a passenger car do it? Yes, but this road is not for the backroad novice no matter what the vehicle. From Long Valley Camp, it was about a 1.5 hour drive to the nearest human. It's a BIG lonely country out there. The photos are a sampling of roadside vistas and shots of the road surface. Road varies: good pavement, bad pavement, good dirt, sand from a sprinkle to a couple of inches, washboard, loose gravel. Speed with my RV was usually about 10 MPH, some faster, some slower.
