| | | - Randy Willis' Ancestors
Many of my ancestors were Baptists, but far from all were. Many have fought in the major wars and served this country well. My fifth great-grandfather Rev. Joseph fought in the Revolutionary War. My great-grandfather Daniel Willis, Jr., served in the Civil War for the South. Dr. Daniel Oscar Willis and Dr. Greene Strother served in World War I. Dr. Strother captured more Germans than any other soldier, besides the famed Sgt. York, in World War I. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. He also served as chaplain to General Claire Chennault’s "Flying Tigers" while in China as a missionary. A host of descendants of Rev. Joseph Willis fought in World War II including my father. His first-cousin, Robert K. "Bobby" Willis Jr., was the first casualty from Rapides Parish, Louisiana in World War II. The American Legion Post in Pineville, Louisiana (his last hometown) was named the Robert K. "Bobby" Willis Jr. Post in honor of his service and duty to his country. (This American Legion Post no longer exists). He is entombed in the USS Arizona at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. He was the first casualty from Rapides Parish, Louisiana in World War II.
