- The Smithsonian Institution was founded for the "increase and diffusion" of knowledge from a bequest to the United States by the British scientist James Smithson (1765–1829), who had never visited the United States himself. In Smithson's will, he stated that should his nephew, Henry James Hungerford, die without heirs, the Smithson estate would go to the government of the United States for creating an "Establishment for the increase & diffusion of Knowledge among men".
The crenellated architecture of the Smithsonian Institution Building on the National Mall has made it known informally as "The Castle". It was built by architect James Renwick, Jr. and completed in 1855. - albums: 3
| | | - United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C.
- United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall, memorial to the victims of the Holocaust . Designed by architect James Ingo Freed, it opened in 1993. Using a stark, harsh architectural vocabulary of industrial forms and unadorned materials, the building itself serves as an oppressive structural reminder of the period of the Holocaust. The museum's permanent collection uses environments such as a boxcar and a barracks, artifacts such as shoes, eyeglasses, suitcases, and concentration camp uniforms and insignia, and photographs, recorded oral histories, and documentary films to follow the Holocaust's stages of isolation, deportation, and extermination and immerse viewers in the lives and fates of victims.

| | | - The History of Color Photography
- Though the invention of photography had an immediate impact on the whole art world, the early photographs were in monochrome. As an additional service, daguerreotypes could be hand- painted, which kept a number of painters of miniatures in business. However, it was to be some time before colour photography was to become a reality.

Naples was founded during the late 1880s by former Confederate general and Kentucky U.S. Senator John Stuart Williams and his partner, Louisville businessman Walter N. Haldeman, the publisher of the Louisville Courier-Journal. Throughout the 1870s and '80's, magazine and newspaper stories telling of the area's mild climate and abundant fish and game likened it to the sunny Italian peninsula. The name Naples caught on when promoters described the bay as "surpassing the bay in Naples, Italy". Marco Island has retained much of the natural beauty of its beginning when the Calusa Indians inhabited the island over 5,000 years ago. Lush tropical foliage and over 200 species of birds including the American Bald Eagle are found here providing opportunities for birdwatching as well as outdoor enthusiasts. The Oleta River State Park is the largest urban park in the Florida State Park system. The central feature of this park is the mouth of the Oleta River, for which it is named. The river has drawn human inhabitants to the area since about 500 BC, when its shores served as a campground for Tequesta Indians. It was used by U.S. troops (who called it Big Snake Creek) in 1841 during the Second Seminole War, and further explored in 1881 by Captain William Hawkins Fulford, whose ventured inland to what is now the city of North Miami Beach. The area became more heavily settled in the 1890s and in 1922, developers changed the name from Big Snake Creek to the Oleta River. human inhabitants to the area since about 500 BC, when its shores served as a campground for Tequesta Indians. North Carolina Zoo is a Zoological Park consisting of two areas: "Africa" and "North America". The 37-acre (150,000 m²) African Plains exhibit alone is as large as many entire zoos. The North Carolina Zoo was the first American zoo to incorporate the "natural habitat" philosophy - presenting animals together with plants in exhibits that resemble the habitats in which they would be found in the wild. Most animals are kept in large expanses of land, which reduces many of the behavior problems that can be caused by close confinement. The Zoo is located atop Purgatory Mountain, which is a part of the ancient Uwharrie Mountains in central North Carolina. These mountains are among the oldest on earth, and time and erosion have gradually worn them down to little more than high hills a few hundred feet above sea level. Nonetheless, roads running around the park do offer superb views of the surrounding countryside.
