Sandhill Cranes

Sandhill and whooping cranes at Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area during fall migration. All photos from viewing stand including flight in the morning and evening. sh=sandhill crane; wc=whooping crane. Note: About 16,000 sandhill cranes were in and around Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area and only four whooping cranes. Also, the whooping cranes were far away, so all whooping crane images have been severly cropped and are of substandard quality. Many of these photos were captured before sunrise and after sunset---that's when many of the cranes fly in and out of the staging area---before and after when you can photograph them! But no excuses, you work with what you've got.

Jasper-Pulaski is second only to central Nebraska as a gateway to migration. The cranes stop at Jasper-Pulaski WLA to replenish their body fat by eating corn from the fields before continuing south and stop over again in the spring on their northern migration to nest and raise young. Jasper-Pulaski has a very nice viewing stand to see hundreds and thousands of birds.
